What we do
- Draft the affidavit and newspaper text so all three documents match letter for letter

- Prepare the soft copy file and the hard-and-soft-copy certificate (no CD needed)
- Guide the BharatKosh payment and add the receipt to the file

Name Change Affidavit Drafting in West Bengal
The affidavit is the base of every name change file. A wrong father's name, a missing address, or a signature in the new name gets the whole file returned, and every later step copies from it.
What we do
- Draft on West Bengal non-judicial stamp paper with old name, new name, parentage, full address and reason
- Match every field against your Aadhaar and the document that is hardest to change
- Tell you the right attestation: Notary for the Central route, First Class Judicial Magistrate for the state route
- Prepare separate wording for surname deletion, maiden name reversion, minor's name or alias addition
- Provide the same affidavit for both Gazette routes if you plan to do both
Cost and time
Stamp paper and attestation together usually run Rs 100 to Rs 500 depending on the denomination and the office. Draft ready the same day you send your ID. Attestation depends on the Notary's or Magistrate's availability.
Affidavit and notice formats with samples. One rule we never break: the affidavit is signed in your old name, because the new name is not legal until the Gazette is published.
Newspaper Name Change Notice in Bengali and English Dailies
What we do
- Draft the notice with old name, new name, father's or husband's name and full address, in the format both Gazette offices accept
- Book it as classified text, not display, in one Bengali daily and one English daily circulating in your district
- Read the proof before it prints, so a typo does not cost a second booking
- Tell you exactly which pages to keep: the complete printed page with the name and date visible, never a cutting
- Prepare Bengali, English, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali or Santhali text where your case needs it
Cost and time
Classified text in a lower rate edition costs from a few hundred rupees per paper. Agencies often quote several thousand for the same result. Notices usually print the next day when booked before the paper's cut-off.
Surname Change After Marriage in West Bengal
There is no legal duty to change your name after marriage, and either spouse may take the other's surname. When you do choose to, there are two paths, and we tell you honestly which one you need.
Path A: marriage certificate alone
If your marriage certificate is registered and shows both the previous and the new name, Aadhaar, PAN, banks and the passport office usually accept it as the proof. You may need no Gazette at all. We check your certificate and say so.
Office by office: Aadhaar · PAN · bank account · voter ID · passport.
Path B: Gazette notification
Where the certificate does not carry both names, or an office insists, we run the affidavit, newspaper and Gazette route, state or central, with the marriage certificate attached. Affidavit format and sample · Gazette name change in West Bengal, explained.
What you need
- Registered marriage certificate
- Aadhaar or Passport in the current name
- Two photographs
Full document list, office by office.
Fee and time
Path A: no Gazette fee, only each office's own update fee. Path B: government fee Rs 1,100 and the timeline of the route chosen.
Reverting to Maiden Name After Divorce or Separation
You are not required to revert, and nobody can compel you. Where you choose to, the Kolkata Gazette Part II expressly covers deletion of surname and reversion to maiden name, with the court order among the documents.
What we do
- Read the decree first, to confirm it records the name you are reverting to
- Draft the affidavit for surname deletion or reversion, as your case needs
- File on the state route (Annexure II) or the central route, with the decree attached
- Handle reversion after death of husband with the death certificate
Your four options, the decree, and the order of updates: read the guide.
What you need
- Certified copy of the divorce decree or separation order, or the death certificate
- Aadhaar or Passport in the current name
- Two photographs
Fee and time
Government fee Rs 1,100 on either route. Part II within 7 days of a complete file; Gazette of India 30 to 45 days.
Minor Child Name Change in West Bengal
The Kolkata Gazette Part II is for applicants aged 18 and above, so a child's name change goes through the Gazette of India. A parent or legal guardian signs everything on the child's behalf. Parent's guide.
What we do
- Draft the affidavit and newspaper text in the parent's declaration format
- Prepare the proforma with the parent as applicant and the child's details
- Advise where both parents should sign, so the file is not questioned later
- Time the filing against school board correction windows, which close within a few years of results
What you need
- Child's birth certificate
- Parent's or guardian's Aadhaar or Passport
- Two photographs of the child
- School ID or admission record, if available
Fee and time
Government fee Rs 1,700 for a minor on BharatKosh. 30 to 45 days after the file reaches Delhi.

What we do
- Prepare the affidavit and undertaking in Annexure III (religion) or Annexure IV (gender)
- Guide the supporting certificate: conversion certificate from a Mandir, Masjid, Monastery, Gurudwara or Church for religion
- Draft the newspaper notice in the correct form for the change
- Handle the case with privacy; documents are used for the application only
What you need
- Aadhaar, Passport or Driving Licence
- Address proof showing West Bengal domicile
- Conversion certificate (religion) or the medical or identity documents the portal asks for (gender)
- Two photographs
Fee and time
Government fee Rs 1,700 for religion and Rs 1,400 for gender on GRIPS. Within 7 days of a complete file.
Name Change for State and Central Government Employees
State Government employees
Expressly covered by the Kolkata Gazette Part II, including a female employee adding or changing a surname on marriage or remarriage, or deleting and reverting after divorce or separation. Any Government photo ID is accepted as identity proof.
Central Government employees
Execute a deed under MHA O.M. 190016/1/87-Estt.(A) dated 12 March 1987, routed through the department so the service book is updated alongside the Gazette. We prepare the deed and the Gazette file together, because a mismatch surfaces at promotion or pension stage, decades later.
What you need
- Government photo ID or service identity card
- Department forwarding letter, where your office requires it
- Marriage certificate or decree, where relevant
- Two photographs
Fee and time
Government fee as per the route: Rs 1,100 on GRIPS or BharatKosh. Timeline of the route, plus your department's own processing.
Name Change for Indians Living Abroad (NRI) from West Bengal
An Indian citizen living abroad who needs a Gazette notification, for a passport reissue at the embassy or for records back home, uses the Gazette of India route at the higher fee. The Kolkata Gazette Part II needs a West Bengal domicile, so it is usually not the option from abroad.
What we do
- Draft the affidavit for attestation at the Indian Embassy or Consulate, or by a local notary with apostille where accepted
- Book the newspaper notices in West Bengal on your behalf and send you the pages by courier or scan as the office requires
- Prepare the proforma and complete file for courier to Delhi in your own name
- Coordinate a family member in West Bengal where papers must be collected locally
What you need
- Indian passport copy
- Overseas address proof
- Two photographs
- Embassy or consulate attestation on the affidavit
Fee and time
Government fee Rs 3,500 on BharatKosh. About 45 days after the file reaches Delhi, plus international courier time each way.
Gazette Corrigendum and Alias Name Addition
Corrigendum: fixing an error in a published Gazette
If the printed notification carries a mistake, the Gazette of India corrects it by corrigendum, which must be applied for within six months of publication. The Kolkata Gazette Part II provides redressal within a week on submission of the registered document. We draft the corrigendum request and the supporting affidavit and file it in time.
Alias name addition
When you are known by two names, for example one on your birth certificate and another on your board certificate, the Gazette can record the alias. The Gazette of India charges Rs 250 extra for each alias name. We word the affidavit and notice so both names are linked correctly.
What you need
- Copy of the published Gazette page with the error, or the documents showing both names
- Original application receipt
- Aadhaar or Passport
Fee and time
Alias: Rs 250 per name in addition to the Gazette fee. Corrigendum: as per the office; usually 2 to 4 weeks. Read your notification the week it appears, so the six-month window is never missed.
Aadhaar, PAN, Passport and Bank Name Update Guidance After Gazette
The Gazette is the middle of the journey, not the end. We give you the exact order and the forms, so nothing is done twice. Passport name change guide.
Aadhaar
Seva Kendra visit with the Gazette copy. Not an online update. Only two name changes allowed in a lifetime, so we make sure the spelling is final. Aadhaar after marriage.
PAN
Correction to the existing card, never a new PAN. We point you to the right form and the documents to attach. PAN correction guide.
Bank and EPFO
KYC update at each bank, joint accounts included, then UAN, insurance and NPS, and separately the nominations. Bank guide.
Passport

A spelling mistake on a birth certificate is a clerical error, fixed by the Registrar of Births and Deaths under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, through the body that registered the birth: the Kolkata Municipal Corporation in Kolkata, or your municipality, notified area or gram panchayat elsewhere.
What we do
- Look at your certificate and tell you, free, whether this is a correction or a full name change (spelling correction guide)
- Guide you to the right Registrar and the documents it will ask for
- Explain the margin-entry rule, so the corrected certificate does not surprise you
- Only where a full legal name change is actually needed, move you to the Gazette route
Fee and time
The Registrar's small correction fee only. No Gazette, no newspaper. Time depends on the local body. This is the cheapest service on this page, and we recommend it whenever it applies.

Not every name change goes through the Gazette. A spelling or clerical error is usually fixed at the source office. Find your situation.
| Your situation | Correct route | Usual proof |
|---|---|---|
| Full name change (a new name) | Gazette notification: Kolkata Gazette Part II or Gazette of India | Affidavit, newspaper pages, published Gazette |
| Surname change after marriage | Usually no Gazette. The registered marriage certificate is what passport, bank, voter ID and RTO ask for | Marriage certificate showing both names, and an ID already updated if you have one |
| Reverting to maiden name after divorce | Decree as proof; Gazette Part II if an office insists (it expressly covers reversion) | Certified decree recording the name |
| Clerical error in birth certificate | Registrar, Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 | Supporting ID and records |
| Name in Aadhaar, PAN, passport | Update at the issuing authority | Gazette or valid supporting proof |
| Name in marksheet or degree | Board or university, backed by the Gazette | Gazette and newspaper pages |
| Passport, visa, or use outside West Bengal | Gazette of India, Part IV | Published Central Gazette |
| Minor's name | Gazette of India only (Part II is 18 and above) | Parent's affidavit, child's birth certificate |
💬 Not sure? We confirm the route free, before you spend anything
Name Change Order in West Bengal: Gazette First, Then Aadhaar, PAN and Bank
The list above is twenty-six services. Almost nobody needs one of them alone. What you have is a situation, and each situation has a chain, in a fixed order, because each step is the proof for the next.
| Your situation | The chain, in order | The thing people get wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Married, taking a new surname | Marriage certificate → Aadhaar → PAN → bank → passport → the rest | Buying a Gazette first. For a married surname most offices want the marriage certificate, not a Gazette. |
| Divorced, going back to your maiden name | Decree → Aadhaar → PAN → bank → passport | Assuming the decree changes the name by itself. It does not; it is only the proof. |
| A new name, by choice | Affidavit → newspapers → Kolkata Gazette Part II or Gazette of India → Aadhaar → PAN → bank → passport → certificates | Updating one document and stopping. A half-finished chain causes every problem people blame the process for. |
| One or two letters spelt wrong | Straight to the issuing office, with an ID that already shows the right spelling | Paying for a Gazette a spelling fix never needed. |
| Wrong name on a child's birth certificate | Registrar correction (KMC or your municipality) → school records → Aadhaar | Going to the Gazette. A clerical error in a birth certificate is a Registrar matter under the 1969 Act. |
| Name on a degree does not match your passport | Gazette of India → board or university endorsement → keep both together | Expecting a reprinted degree. Most universities issue a linking letter instead, and that is what employers accept. |
| Government employee changing name | State: Part II → service book. Central: MHA deed → Gazette of India → service book → then personal documents | Treating the service record like any other document. It has its own rule, and that is where a Gazette is truly required. |
Why Aadhaar sits so early in every chain
Every other office reads the name on your Aadhaar. An Aadhaar that already agrees with your claim turns each later application into a formality. But UIDAI allows only two name changes in a lifetime, not two a year, two ever, so settle the exact spelling before you file the first one. That single fact should shape the order of everything else you do.
Name Change Cost in West Bengal: Government Fee vs Service Fee
Competing pages advertise one number and leave you to discover the rest. There are three kinds of cost here, and only one of them is ours.
| Cost | Who gets it | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| Stamp paper and attestation for the affidavit | Stamp vendor and the Notary or Magistrate's office | Rs 100 to Rs 500 |
| Newspaper notices, one Bengali and one English daily | The newspapers | From a few hundred rupees each at classified rates |
| Kolkata Gazette Part II fee | Government of West Bengal, via GRIPS | Rs 1,100 name or surname; Rs 1,700 religion; Rs 1,400 gender. Subject to revision; the challan raised for your application is what binds |
| Gazette of India fee | Government of India, via BharatKosh | Rs 1,100 adult; Rs 1,700 minor; Rs 3,500 abroad; Rs 250 per alias. Non-refundable |
| Speed post to Delhi (Central route only) | India Post or courier | Rs 50 to Rs 200 |
| Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID, RTO updates | Each office | Small or nil. A voter ID correction is free. Aadhaar and PAN charge modest fixed fees |
| Our service fee | Us | Quoted for your case before you pay anything, and separate from all of the above |
Full fee guide with worked totals. Two things worth saying plainly. A published Gazette PDF is a free download from wbgazettepart2.in or egazette.gov.in; anyone charging a "retrieval fee" to hand you your own notification is charging for something the state gives away. And a clean, simple case is doable without us: the affidavit is a form, the state portal is built for the person whose name it is. We earn our fee on the messy cases: a mismatch across documents, a returned file, a Magistrate attestation nobody told you about, a board that wants something unusual, a name history that takes explaining.
When You Do Not Need a Gazette or a Name Change Service
We would rather tell you this now than take a fee for something you did not need. If your case is on the left, go straight to the office named.
You almost certainly do not need us
- A married surname on your passport: the registered marriage certificate is accepted on reissue. No Gazette, no agent.
- A voter ID correction: Form 8, online, free. The Election Commission charges nothing.
- A one or two letter spelling fix where an existing ID already shows the right spelling.
- Downloading a Gazette you already published: it is a free public record on wbgazettepart2.in or egazette.gov.in.
- Document attestation by a gazetted officer: that is a person at your block or SDO office, not the Gazette office and not us.
Where a service earns its fee
- Your name differs across Aadhaar, PAN and your certificates, and you do not know which one to make the anchor.
- A file has already been returned once and you do not know why.
- You need the Gazette of India for a passport or a job outside the state, and the two-witness proforma, soft copy certificate and BharatKosh steps are new to you.
- The state route needs a First Class Judicial Magistrate attestation and you are not sure where to get it.
- A board or university is asking for something the rest of your paperwork does not obviously satisfy.
- Several people are involved: a child, co-heirs, a spouse who must also sign.
What Happens If Your Name Change Application Is Rejected?
It is the thing people most want to know before they hand over money, so here it is, by document.
| Where it was rejected | What you can actually do |
|---|---|
| Kolkata Gazette Part II | Shortfalls come by SMS with an OTP link and are fixed online. The guideline provides redressal within a week on submission of the registered document. False or incomplete information forfeits the fee, so correct, do not guess. |
| Gazette of India | Returns are nearly always curable: a spelling that does not match, a form signed in the new name, a cutting instead of a full page, a document older than a year, a demand draft. Correct and re-post. The fee already paid is not refunded, so fix the cause once. |
| Voter ID (Form 8) | If the ERO considered your documents and still refused, that is an order with its own appeal to the District Magistrate and then the Chief Electoral Officer, on a short deadline. Do not simply re-apply without checking which kind of refusal it was. |
| Aadhaar | Re-submit through a Seva Kendra, and mind the two-changes-a-lifetime limit; a rejected request should not be re-filed carelessly. Beyond the limit, a UIDAI Regional Office exception route exists but is slow. |
| PAN | Almost always a mismatch with Aadhaar. Fix Aadhaar first, then re-file. Re-filing PAN against an unchanged Aadhaar produces the same rejection. |
| Birth certificate | A Registrar refusal has its own route under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, including appeal provisions. This is the one worth asking about before acting. |
| Board or university | Usually a documentary gap rather than a refusal on merits. Ask, in writing, exactly which document they want; that question resolves most of these. |
The habit that protects you: check status weekly while anything is pending, and keep the screenshot. Several of these routes run on a deadline from the date of the order, not from the day you noticed it.

What we will not do
- Submit a Gazette of India file in our name; the Department does not accept it, and files done that way bounce

- Hide the Government fee inside a package price
Name Change Services in West Bengal: People Also Ask
Which name change service do I need in West Bengal?
It depends on where the new name must be accepted. For Aadhaar, PAN, bank and West Bengal records, the Kolkata Gazette Part II is usually enough. For passport, visa, a minor, or any office outside the state, you need the Gazette of India. Send us your documents on WhatsApp and we tell you which one, free.
Do you charge separately for the affidavit and newspaper?
Our service fee covers drafting, checking, filing guidance and follow-up. Stamp paper, attestation, newspaper charges and the government Gazette fee are actual costs, shown to you separately before you pay anything.
Can you do both the Kolkata Gazette and the Gazette of India together?
Yes. The same affidavit and newspaper pages work for both. Only the attestation differs: a First Class Judicial Magistrate for the state route, a Notary for the central route. Many families do both when a passport is planned.
What is your service fee for a name change in West Bengal?
It is quoted on call or WhatsApp after a free document check, because it depends on the route and the case. The government fee is fixed: Rs 1,100 on GRIPS for the Kolkata Gazette Part II, and Rs 1,100 adult or Rs 1,700 minor on BharatKosh for the Gazette of India.
Do you submit the Gazette of India file for me?
No, because the Department of Publication does not accept files from agents. We prepare and check every page; you sign and post it in your own name to Civil Lines, Delhi-110054. That is exactly why our files do not come back.
How fast can the name change be done in West Bengal?
Kolkata Gazette Part II: within 7 days of a complete online application, so about two weeks from a standing start. Gazette of India: 30 to 45 days after the file reaches Delhi. There is no expedited option on either route.
Can you help if my Gazette file was rejected by another agency?
Yes. Send us the returned file and the letter. Most returns are for a mismatch between affidavit, newspaper and form, a cutting instead of a full page, a document older than a year, or a demand draft. We fix the cause and refile.
Do I need a lawyer or a court order for a name change?
For most cases, no. A name change is an administrative Gazette process, not a court case. A court decree is only attached where the change follows a divorce or a court order. If your case needs a court step, we tell you before you pay.
Do I need a Gazette for a name change in education documents?
For most boards and universities, a Gazette notification plus the newspaper pages is the accepted proof to correct a name in marksheets and certificates. Expect an endorsement or linking letter rather than a reprinted certificate. We guide you on the exact requirement for your board.
Is a newspaper advertisement needed for a name change in West Bengal?
Yes, on both routes. The Kolkata Gazette Part II guideline asks for a recent advertisement in a daily newspaper, and the Gazette of India file includes the notice. We publish in one Bengali and one English daily so the same pages work for either.
Which service do I need if I just got married?
Probably fewer than you think. Start with the registered marriage certificate as your proof, then Aadhaar, then PAN, then your bank, then the passport. A Gazette is generally not part of a married-surname change. We sell Gazette filings, so weigh that as you read it.
Do you charge for telling me which route I need?
No. Send us your situation and we tell you the route, including when that route does not involve us at all. Quite a lot of the answers on this page are: go to that office yourself, it is free.
Can I do this myself without any service?
For a clean case, yes, and we would rather say so. The state portal is built for the person whose name it is. We earn our fee on mismatched documents, returned files and unusual board demands.
