Why Most Jalpaiguri District Information Online Is Out of Date
Search for this district and you will find pages listing Alipurduar as one of its subdivisions, alongside blocks like Madarihat, Kalchini, Falakata and Kumargram. That was true until June 2014. It has not been true since.
You will also find pages listing Dhupguri as a block of Jalpaiguri Sadar. That was true until January 2024, when Dhupguri became a subdivision in its own right.
Neither of those is anyone's fault exactly. Pages get written and not revisited, and each copy spreads. But the effect is real: people prepare a certificate application for the wrong office and lose weeks.
So the practical instruction for this district is simple. Check the date on whatever you are reading, including this page, which was last updated in September 2026.

None of it affects your documents. Boundary and subdivision changes never make an old certificate false. They only change which desk you deal with next.
Old Jalpaiguri Documents for an Alipurduar Address: No Correction Needed
Alipurduar became a separate district in June 2014. Before that it was a subdivision of Jalpaiguri, so anyone with roots there holds documents naming Jalpaiguri.
Those documents are correct. A birth certificate, a school record or a land paper records the position on the day it was issued, and it did not become false when the state drew a new district line.
What changed is where you go now. A certificate application, a correction or anything else you file today belongs to the Alipurduar administration, not to Jalpaiguri.

Dhupguri Subdivision Since 2024: Where You Apply Now
Dhupguri became a subdivision in January 2024, carved out of Jalpaiguri Sadar. It covers the Dhupguri and Banarhat blocks and has Dhupguri municipality.
If you live there, your Sub-Divisional Officer is now at Dhupguri, not at Jalpaiguri. That matters for a caste certificate and for a domicile certificate, both of which run through the SDO.
Older documents naming Jalpaiguri Sadar subdivision remain accurate for their date and need nothing done to them.

With a subdivision this new, it is worth a phone call to confirm what the office wants and that your block is handled there. That call costs nothing and can save a day.

Jalpaiguri is the district headquarters, with nine development blocks and four municipalities across the district.

Siliguri Municipal Corporation is centred in Darjeeling district, but around 15 of its 47 wards lie inside Jalpaiguri district, in the Dabgram and Phulbari country.
If you live in one of those wards, you are in both at once, and it is not a contradiction. Your civic body is the corporation, so for a birth record the corporation is likely the registering authority. Your district administration is Jalpaiguri, so for a caste or domicile certificate you deal with the Jalpaiguri SDO.
The certificate itself settles the first half of that: the registering authority is printed on it.
