Gazette Fees in West Bengal: Every Figure and Who Receives It

Part II, name or surname
Rs 1,100 to the Government of West Bengal, paid on GRIPS under head 0058-00-501-001-14. Revised from time to time by the State Government, so check the portal before paying.
Part II, religion
Rs 1,700 on GRIPS, same head.
Part II, gender
Rs 1,400 on GRIPS, same head.
Gazette of India, adult
Rs 1,100 to the Department of Publication, paid only on bharatkosh.gov.in. No demand draft and no cash.
Gazette of India, minor
Rs 1,700 on BharatKosh, applied for by a parent or guardian.
Indian living abroad
Rs 3,500 on BharatKosh, plus embassy attestation and courier costs of your own.
Each extra alias
Rs 250 on BharatKosh, on top of the base central fee.
Stamp paper and attestation
Rs 100 to Rs 500 in practice. West Bengal uses low denominations, commonly Rs 10 or Rs 50, and your notary or the court advises the correct one.
Two newspaper notices
From a few hundred rupees when booked as classified text in a lower rate edition. A display advertisement costs many times more and buys nothing extra.
Speed post to Delhi
Rs 50 to Rs 200, and only if you use the central route.
Refunds
The Central Government fee is not refundable, including when a file is returned. On the state route, false or incomplete information means forfeiture of the fee and legal action under the guideline.
Fast-track
Does not exist on either route. No fee buys speed, so anybody charging extra for urgency is charging for their own turnaround, not the Government press.

Gazette Name Change Cost in West Bengal: Three Kinds of Fees

Only one of them is ours, and it is the only one that is negotiable.

🏛

Government fees

Paid by you, in your own name, to the government portal. GRIPS for the state gazette, BharatKosh for the central. Fixed, published, and not refundable in practice.

📰

Third-party costs

Stamp paper and attestation, two newspaper notices, speed post or courier. Paid to the vendor, notary or Magistrate's court, newspaper and India Post. Small, and easy to overpay through an agency.

🤝

Service fee

Ours, quoted for your case before you pay anything, separate from the two above. We earn it on route selection, drafting, Magistrate attestation, file checking and follow-up, not on retrieving a public PDF.

State Route

Kolkata Gazette Part II Fees: Rs 1,100 and How to Pay on GRIPS

The portal's Payment Details screen lists the printing charges: Rs 1,100 for Change of Name, Rs 1,100 for Change of Surname in all cases including deletion and reversion to maiden name, Rs 1,700 for Change of Religion, Rs 1,400 for Change of Gender, and Rs 1,400 for a PSU or Government Organisation notice.

Payment is not collected on wbgazettepart2.in itself. You pay on the West Bengal Government's GRIPS portal (wbifms.gov.in) under Head of Account 0058-00-501-001-14, get a receipt with a Deposit ID, then return to the gazette portal and enter the Deposit Amount and Deposit ID and upload the receipt.

What is not charged

  • No fee to register or to check status
  • No fee to download the published notification or the Monthly Gazette
  • No fee at the Sealdah help desk
  • No fast-track fee; there is no such option

Where the state route saves money

No speed post to Delhi, no soft copy certificate, and a 7-day timeline instead of 30 to 45 days, so fewer follow-ups. The extra cost is the Magistrate attestation instead of a notary, which is usually a small difference in fee but a trip to the court.

The GRIPS payment step, screen by screen

Central Route

Gazette of India Fees: Rs 1,100 to Rs 3,500 and How to Pay on BharatKosh

The Department of Publication charges Rs 1,100 for an adult name change, Rs 1,700 for a minor, Rs 3,500 for an Indian living abroad, and Rs 250 extra for each alias name. Taking a name of another religion without changing religion is Rs 1,350, with an undertaking.

Payment is made only on bharatkosh.gov.in, the Government's non-tax receipt portal, and the receipt goes into the postal file. The fee is non-refundable: if the file comes back for a mismatch, you correct and re-post, but you do not get the fee back and a fresh application means a fresh fee.

Costs the central route adds

  • Speed post or courier to Civil Lines, Delhi-110054: Rs 50 to Rs 200
  • Printing the typed proforma and soft copy certificate
  • For applicants abroad: embassy attestation and international courier

Never

No demand draft, no cash, no counter payment for a postal file. A DD in the envelope is the fastest way to get the whole file returned. The Department accepts BharatKosh only.

Plain Answers

Is the Gazette Fee Refundable? Forfeiture and Fast-Track Explained

Refunds

The Gazette of India fee is non-refundable. The Kolkata Gazette Part II guideline states that false, incomplete, misleading information or misrepresentation leads to forfeiture of the application fee and legal action. In practice, treat both as money spent the moment you pay, and make the file complete before paying.

Second fee

A returned central file corrected and re-posted does not need a second fee if the original receipt is in the file. A fresh application does. On the state portal, fix a shortfall through the SMS link; a new application is a new fee.

Fast-track

Neither Saraswaty Press nor the Department of Publication sells expedited processing. The state guideline says 7 days for a complete file; the central gazette publishes on Saturdays and most files take 30 to 45 days. Anyone charging extra for "urgent government processing" is charging for their own turnaround.

Retrieval fee

Both gazettes are free public records. Downloading your own notification costs nothing on wbgazettepart2.in or egazette.gov.in. A "retrieval charge" is a charge for something the state gives away.

The Rs 999 Arithmetic

The Central Government fee alone is Rs 1,100 and the state fee is Rs 1,100. So an "all inclusive" package priced at Rs 999 cannot include the government fee. Before paying any provider, ask three questions: What is the government fee, stated separately from your charge? What happens if the file is returned? Is your fee refundable when it is? We answer all three before you pay. Our costs, separated honestly.

People Also Ask

Common Questions People Search About Gazette Name Change Cost

Three short answers to the searches that bring people to this page.

What is the total cost of a name change in West Bengal?

For a straightforward adult case on the state route, count Rs 1,100 Government fee, Rs 100 to Rs 500 for stamp paper and attestation, and a few hundred rupees for two classified newspaper notices. That is roughly Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000 before anyone charges a service fee. The central route adds postage and, if you do both gazettes, a second Rs 1,100.

Why do agents quote such different prices for the same gazette?

Because the Government fee is fixed and the service fee is not. The Rs 1,100 is the same for everybody, so the difference between one quote and another is entirely somebody's own charge. Ask any provider to state the Government fee and their fee as two separate numbers. If they will not, that tells you something.

Can I get a gazette name change for Rs 999?

No, and the arithmetic settles it without any argument. The Government fee alone is Rs 1,100, so a package priced below that cannot include it. Either the Government fee is extra and will be asked for later, or the promise is not real. Add the stamp paper and the newspaper notices and the honest floor is well above Rs 1,500.
