Name Change in an Aadhaar Card in West Bengal: Two Chances, and How Not to Waste One

The rule that matters most is not the fee or the form. It is that UIDAI allows only two name changes in a lifetime, and a small spelling correction uses one of them. People spend a change fixing a letter, then discover they cannot afford the change they actually needed. This guide covers the limit, when a gazette is the proof, what the update costs and what to do if both changes are already gone.

How to Change Your Name on Aadhaar in West Bengal (Quick Answer)

Decide first whether yours is a correction or a change of name. A spelling error is corrected against an existing document in the right name, such as a PAN or passport. A genuinely different name needs the gazette notification as proof: the Kolkata Gazette Part II for an adult West Bengal resident, or the Gazette of India for a passport, a minor or use outside the state. Before you request anything, settle the exact spelling, because UIDAI allows only two name changes in a lifetime and a correction counts as one. A name update is done in person at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre; of the demographic fields, only the address can be updated online. The fee is commonly Rs 75, with reports of a Rs 75 to Rs 125 band. Keep the Update Request Number, then update PAN, the bank and the passport in that order.

Two Aadhaar Name Changes in a Lifetime, and a Typo Uses One

UIDAI's current position allows a name to be changed twice in a lifetime, and that count does not distinguish between a full change of name and a one letter correction. Date of birth may be corrected once. Address has no such limit.

The practical consequence is the whole reason this page leads with it. Someone corrects a spelling at twenty, adds a married surname at twenty six, and then has nothing left when a passport office insists on a different form of the name years later. Before you request anything, write the full name you intend to carry for the rest of your life, with spelling, spacing and surname order, and check it against your PAN, your school records and your passport.

Do this before you touch the name field

Line up Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank and your board certificates on the table. Pick the exact form that most of them already carry, or the one you want them all to carry, and change everything to that. One decision, one change.

Two Cases

Aadhaar Name Correction or Change of Name: Which Is Yours

Getting this wrong wastes both money and one of your two changes. Correction or change: the decision table for every document.

The Proof

When Aadhaar Needs a Gazette Notification for a Name Change

Aadhaar records what a document says. For a correction, an existing ID in the right name does that job. For a real change of name there is no such document yet, and that is exactly what a gazette notification creates: a published record linking the old name and the new one, which any office can check.

Which gazette depends on the case, not on where you live. An adult West Bengal resident updating state records can use the Kolkata Gazette Part II, online, about a week. A passport, a minor, or use outside the state takes the case to the Gazette of India, 30 to 45 days.

Sequence

Gazette first, Aadhaar second. Doing it the other way round leaves you asking a Kendra to accept a name that no document carries. Which gazette your case needs.

Where

Aadhaar Name Change at a Seva Kendra: Why It Is Not Online

Name updates were once available both online and at a centre. The current position is narrower: of the demographic fields, only the address can be updated online, and a name update is handled in person at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre, with the original proof shown at the counter.

Older guides still describe a myAadhaar name update with a Rs 50 fee, so you may find instructions that no longer match the portal. If the option appears for your case, use it; otherwise plan for a visit rather than assuming something has gone wrong.

At the Kendra

  • Fill the enrolment and update form, or ask for it at the counter
  • Show the original proof of identity carrying the correct name, plus a copy
  • Write out the exact spelling before you go; the operator types what you give
  • Pay against a receipt, commonly Rs 75 with reports of a Rs 75 to Rs 125 band
  • Keep the acknowledgement slip with the Update Request Number

A child must attend in person with a parent. A child's Aadhaar, step by step.

Avoid

Why Aadhaar Name Updates Get Rejected

❌

The proof does not carry the new name

An ID in the old name cannot prove a new one. That is what the gazette is for.

❌

Spelling differs from the proof

Enter the name exactly as the document shows it, including spacing and initials.

❌

A major change offered with an ordinary ID

Scrutiny is tighter than it once was, especially where Aadhaar is linked to PAN, banks and benefits.

❌

A poor scan

Blurred or cropped uploads are refused. Photograph the whole page, flat and in daylight.

❌

Mobile number not linked or not with you

The Kendra sends an OTP to the registered mobile. If yours has changed, get that updated in the same visit.

❌

Trying a third change

Beyond the limit the ordinary route simply will not process it.

The Hard Case

Aadhaar Name Change Limit Exceeded: What to Do

This is the situation we are asked about most, and it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance. Once both changes are used, the ordinary update route will not process a third. What remains is an exception considered by a UIDAI Regional Office, on strong legal justification with a gazette notification and consistent supporting documents. Reports describe these as examined case by case and rarely approved.

So the honest advice is preventive. If you are reading this before your second change, stop and settle the final form of your name now. If you are reading it after, prepare the strongest possible file: the gazette, every record already in the new name, and a clear written explanation of why the change is necessary.

We will not promise you a third change

Anyone guaranteeing one is selling something they do not control. We can prepare the gazette and the file properly; the decision is UIDAI's.

Sequence

Aadhaar First, Then PAN, Bank and Passport

1

Aadhaar

Other systems read it during verification, so it goes first. Keep the URN until the updated e-Aadhaar downloads.

2

PAN

Correction on the existing PAN, same number, with Aadhaar-based verification in most cases.

3

Bank and investments

Branch KYC with the gazette, Aadhaar and PAN together. Mutual funds and demat accounts read PAN.

4

Passport, voter ID, licence, records

The passport is a reissue with a new number. Voter ID is Form 8, free.

FAQ & People Also Ask

Aadhaar Name Change in West Bengal: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change my name on my Aadhaar card in West Bengal?

Decide first whether it is a correction or a change of name. For a spelling correction, an existing document in the correct name, such as a PAN card or passport, is usually the proof. For a real change of name, the gazette notification is the proof, so publish that first. Then request the update in person at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre, with the original proof, the fee paid at the counter and the Update Request Number kept safe.

How many times can an Aadhaar name be changed?

Twice in a lifetime under UIDAI's current position, and that counts small corrections as well as full changes. Date of birth may be corrected once. Address has no such limit. This is the single most important thing to know before you touch the name field, because a careless correction now costs you the change you may need later.

What if I have already used both name changes?

A third change is not available through the ordinary route. UIDAI's Regional Office can consider an exception on strong legal justification, supported by a gazette notification and consistent documents, and approvals are reported to be rare and slow. Assume it is difficult, and settle the exact spelling before your remaining change is used.

Do I need a gazette for an Aadhaar name change?

For a genuine change of name, yes in practice; the gazette notification is the document that explains why the name on Aadhaar no longer matches the old records. For a minor spelling correction, an existing valid ID in the correct name is usually enough. Where the two changes are already used, the gazette becomes essential rather than optional.

Can I change my Aadhaar name online?

In general, no. Of the demographic fields, only the address can be updated online; a name update is handled in person at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre. Older guides describing an online name update reflect an earlier arrangement, so do not be surprised when the portal does not offer it.

What is the fee?

A name update is commonly quoted at Rs 75, with reports of a Rs 75 to Rs 125 band across Kendra services and more where biometrics are involved. Confirm the current amount at the Kendra and pay against a receipt.

How long does the update take?

Commonly 7 to 30 days, and longer in some cases. Track the Update Request Number on uidai.gov.in and download the updated e-Aadhaar once it shows as complete.

Which documents does UIDAI accept as name proof?

UIDAI publishes its own valid documents list and revises it. In practice a passport, PAN, voter ID, driving licence or a gazette notification are the documents people use, with a marriage certificate or a decree as supporting papers where the change follows marriage or divorce. Check the current list before you go.

Will my name change be rejected?

Rejections usually come from documents rather than the change itself: a proof that does not carry the new name, a spelling that differs from the proof, a mismatch with PAN or the bank record, or a major change offered with only an ordinary ID. Match the proof letter for letter and the request usually goes through.

Should I change Aadhaar first or the other records?

Aadhaar first, then PAN, then the bank, then the passport. Aadhaar is the record most other systems read during verification, and doing it first saves repeating steps.

Does my name have to match my PAN exactly?

It should. Aadhaar and PAN are cross-checked in many processes, and a difference between them causes trouble at income tax filing, bank KYC and investment platforms. Fix both to the same form of the name.

Do you help with the Aadhaar step?

We prepare the gazette that Aadhaar accepts as proof, and tell you exactly what to carry and in what order to update your records. The Aadhaar update itself is done by you at the Kendra or on the portal, because it needs your own authentication.
