Documents Required for an Aadhaar Name Change in West Bengal: One Proof Does the Work
Most lists you find are long and unhelpful. The truth is simpler: Aadhaar wants one valid photo identity document that already carries the name you want. Everything else is either supporting paper or a substitute for that document when it does not exist yet, which is exactly what a gazette notification is.

What Documents Do You Need for an Aadhaar Name Change? (Quick Answer)
One valid photo proof of identity that already carries the name you want. In practice that is a passport, PAN card, voter ID, driving licence, a government or PSU service identity card, or a gazette notification. For a spelling correction, an existing ID in the correct spelling is enough. For a genuine change of name, no document carries the new name yet, so the gazette is what creates one. A marriage certificate or a divorce decree is supporting paper, not name proof on its own. Carry originals with copies to the Aadhaar Seva Kendra, since the name update is done in person. UIDAI revises its accepted list, so check the current one before you travel.

| Document | Role | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | Proof of identity | Photo, name and address, so it can serve as identity and address proof together |
| PAN card | Proof of identity | Widely used; should match Aadhaar exactly for tax and banking |
| Voter ID (EPIC) | Proof of identity | Photo and name |
| Driving licence | Proof of identity | Photo and name |
| Government or PSU service ID, pensioner ID | Proof of identity | Where issued with a photograph |
| Gazette notification | Proof of a change of name | The answer when no existing document carries the new name |
| Marriage certificate | Supporting | Proves a marriage, not that you now use a different name |
| Divorce decree | Supporting | Ends a marriage; does not publish a name |
| Affidavit | Weak on its own | A sworn statement, not a published record; part of the gazette process |
| Birth certificate | Identity and date of birth, mainly for children | Must carry the child's proper name |
Aadhaar Name Change Needs One Valid Proof of Identity
Aadhaar does not decide what your name is. It copies what an accepted document says. So the only question that matters is: which document already carries the name you want, with your photograph on it? Bring that, and the update is straightforward. Bring five documents that all show the old name, and no amount of paperwork helps.
That single question also tells you whether you need a gazette. If the answer is "none of them", the gazette is how you create the document that does.
Before you collect anything
Settle the exact spelling first. UIDAI allows two name changes in a lifetime, corrections included. The two-change limit, and how not to waste one.
Documents for an Aadhaar Spelling Correction
- One valid photo ID showing the correct spelling: passport, PAN, voter ID or driving licence
- The original, plus a photocopy
- Your Aadhaar number or e-Aadhaar
- The registered mobile with you, for the OTP
No gazette, no affidavit, no newspaper. If someone is selling you a gazette to fix one letter, ask which office demanded it.
Careful
A correction still uses one of your two lifetime changes. If a bigger change is coming, for instance a marriage or a passport requirement, deal with both together rather than separately.
Documents for a Genuine Change of Name
- Gazette notification page in the new name
- Newspaper pages, kept with the file even where the Kendra does not ask
- Your existing Aadhaar
- Supporting paper: marriage certificate, divorce decree, adoption order, as the case may be
- Originals with copies, and the registered mobile
Which gazette depends on the case rather than where you live. An adult West Bengal resident can use the Kolkata Gazette Part II, online, about a week. A passport, a minor, or use outside the state goes to the Gazette of India, 30 to 45 days.
Which gazette your case needs · The documents the gazette file itself needs.
Marriage Certificate or Divorce Decree for Aadhaar Name Change
A marriage certificate proves that a marriage took place. It does not, by itself, establish that you now go by a different name, because taking a spouse's surname is a choice rather than an automatic consequence. That is why a Kendra often wants more than the certificate alone, and why the gazette exists.
A divorce decree is the same story in reverse. It ends a marriage; it does not publish a name. For reverting to a maiden name, the gazette is the proof and the decree supports it.

Documents for Aadhaar Date of Birth Correction, and the e-PAN Catch
Date of birth runs on its own list: a birth certificate, a passport, class 10 or 12 marksheets, or a government identity card that states the date. Reports of UIDAI's current list note that a PAN card is accepted in its physical form while an e-PAN is not for this purpose, which catches people who only ever downloaded theirs.
Date of birth may be corrected once. Treat it with the same care as the name, and check the certificate before you apply rather than after.
If the birth certificate is wrong
Fix it at the Registrar first, because Aadhaar copies it. The Registrar correction route.
Documents for a Child's Aadhaar Name Change
- The child's birth certificate carrying the proper name
- The child's Aadhaar or e-Aadhaar
- The parent's Aadhaar, and the other parent's Aadhaar number where the form asks
- Gazette notification, where the child's name has legally changed
- The child, in person
Two jobs, one visit
If the child is due a biometric update at five or fifteen, do both together. A child's Aadhaar, step by step.
Documents That Get an Aadhaar Name Update Rejected
An ID showing the old name
It proves who you were, not who you now are. This is the single commonest cause.
An affidavit on its own
A sworn statement is not a published record. It belongs inside the gazette process.
A marriage certificate alone for a surname change
Supporting paper, not name proof.
A document without a photograph
Identity proofs are photo documents. A bill is address proof at best.
A spelling that differs from the proof
Type the name exactly as the document prints it, spacing and initials included.
A blurred or cropped scan
Photograph the whole page flat, in daylight, with all four corners visible.
Documents for an Aadhaar Name Change: Frequently Asked Questions
What documents are required for an Aadhaar name change?
One document does the real work: a valid proof of identity that already carries the name you want, with your photograph. UIDAI publishes its own list and revises it; the documents people use in practice are the passport, PAN card, voter ID, driving licence, a government or PSU service identity card, and a gazette notification. Where the change follows marriage or divorce, the marriage certificate or the decree goes in as supporting paper rather than as the name proof itself.
Is a gazette notification compulsory?
Not for a spelling correction, where an existing ID in the correct name does the job. It becomes the practical answer for a genuine change of name, because no other document yet carries the new name, and it is effectively unavoidable where your two lifetime changes are already used and the case goes to a Regional Office.
Is a marriage certificate enough to change my name in Aadhaar?
On its own, usually not. A marriage certificate proves a marriage; it does not by itself establish that you now use a different name. It is strong supporting paper alongside a proof of identity in the new name, or alongside a gazette notification. Many Kendras will ask for more than the certificate alone.
Does a divorce decree work as name proof?
No. The decree ends a marriage; it does not publish a name. For reverting to a maiden name, the gazette is the proof and the decree supports it. This trips up a lot of people, so plan the gazette first.
Can I use an affidavit instead of a gazette?
An affidavit is your own sworn statement, not a published record, and on its own it is weak proof for a name change at Aadhaar. It is part of the gazette process rather than a substitute for it.
Does the document have to carry my photograph?
For proof of identity, yes as a rule. UIDAI's identity documents are photo documents, which is why a passport, voter ID or PAN is used rather than a utility bill.
Can one document serve as both identity and address proof?
Where a single document carries your photograph, name and address, UIDAI's guidance allows it to serve as both, which saves carrying two. A passport is the common example.
What documents work for a date of birth correction?
A different list applies: a birth certificate, passport, class 10 or 12 marksheets, and a PAN card in its physical form, with reports that an e-PAN is not accepted for this. Date of birth may be corrected once only, so treat it with the same care as the name.
What if my name is spelt differently across my documents?
Pick the form you want, get that onto one strong document first, and use it as the proof for the rest. Aadhaar and PAN in particular are cross-checked in banking and tax processes, so they should match exactly.
Do I need originals or are copies enough?
Take the originals to the Kendra along with copies. The operator checks the original and returns it. Send clear, complete scans if a document is being uploaded.
What extra documents does a child's Aadhaar need?
The child's birth certificate carrying the proper name, the parents' Aadhaar, and the gazette where the name has legally changed, with the child present. UIDAI's child enrolment form asks for the parents' Aadhaar details.
Which document should I get first?
The one that will carry the new name for everything else. For a real change of name that is the gazette; for a correction it is whichever existing ID already shows the right spelling.
