Name Change in Aadhaar Card After Divorce in West Bengal: Gazette First, Then One Kendra Visit

After marriage, the certificate carried your new name into Aadhaar. After divorce, the decree does not carry it back: it ends a marriage, it does not change a name. So the order is different: gazette first, then one Seva Kendra visit that changes the name, the address, and the "care of" line that often still shows the ex-husband's name. This guide covers all of it, the fee, and the lifetime limit.

How to Change Your Aadhaar Name After Divorce in West Bengal (Quick Answer)

Get the gazette notification first: the Kolkata Gazette Part II under Change of Surname, Annexure II, with the certified decree uploaded, Rs 1,100 on GRIPS, issued within 7 days of a complete file; the state gazette is enough for Aadhaar. Then visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with the gazette page, your current Aadhaar, the decree and, if you have moved or the C/o line names your ex-spouse, an address proof at your current home. Fill the update form with the maiden name, tick address if needed, give biometrics, pay the update fee (Rs 50 per UIDAI's schedule) and keep the URN. Download the updated e-Aadhaar once approved, then correct PAN and update the bank. UIDAI allows two name changes in a lifetime; if you changed on marriage, this is the second.

The Difference From Marriage

Is a Divorce Decree Enough for an Aadhaar Name Change? Why the Gazette Is Needed

UIDAI updates a name against a document that shows the new name. A marriage certificate shows the married name beside the maiden one, so it worked on the way in. A divorce decree shows that a marriage ended; it does not state your new name unless the court added a clause restoring it, and Kendra operators work from the valid-documents list, not from reading decrees. The document that shows the new name and links it to the old one is the gazette notification.

For Aadhaar, the Kolkata Gazette Part II is enough. Its guideline expressly covers reversion to a maiden name or deletion of a surname on divorce or separation, with the decree uploaded, under Annexure II, at Rs 1,100, issued within 7 days of a complete file. Do the Gazette of India as well only if a passport or use outside West Bengal is in your plans.

Two in a Lifetime

Aadhaar Name Change Limit After Divorce: Marriage Used One, Divorce Uses the Other

UIDAI allows two name changes on an Aadhaar in a lifetime. If you changed your name on marriage, the reversion after divorce is your second and last. That makes the exact form of the name a one-time decision: maiden name in full, or first name without the married surname, or a new name. Whatever you choose, the gazette must carry it in that exact spelling, because the Kendra copies the gazette.

  • Read the gazette PDF before the Kendra visit: spelling, spacing, surname order
  • Write the final name on paper and fill the form from that paper
  • Never took the married name on Aadhaar? Then this is your first change, not your second
  • Both used already? UIDAI's Regional Office exception route, with the gazette and a written request; slow

How to Remove the Ex-Husband's Name (C/o) From the Aadhaar Address

Aadhaar has no spouse field, but many married women's Aadhaar addresses begin with "C/o [husband's name]". That is part of the address, not the name, and a name update does not touch it. To remove it, tick address on the same update form and give an address proof at your current home: in your own name, or a proof in the name of the person you live with along with a supporting document, as UIDAI's list allows. The C/o line is then replaced by the new address, with a different C/o or none.

One visit, three fields

Name (gazette), address (new proof), C/o line (same address update). Ask the operator to do all three on one form so you pay one fee and wait once.

What to Carry

Documents Required for Aadhaar Name Change After Divorce

  • Gazette notification page, printed (Kolkata Gazette Part II is enough)
  • Current Aadhaar card or e-Aadhaar
  • Certified copy of the divorce decree, as a supporting document
  • The final name written in block letters
  • Registered mobile active, for the OTP and the URN SMS
  • Address proof at your current home, if moving or changing the C/o line
  • Passport in the new name, if already reissued; the strongest single proof
  • Newspaper pages and affidavit, in case the operator asks to see the gazette's basis

UIDAI's valid-documents list is what the operator checks; it changes from time to time.

Avoid

Why an Aadhaar Name Update After Divorce Gets Rejected

❌

Decree only, no gazette

The operator has no document showing the new name. Gazette first.

❌

Name on the form differs from the gazette

The Kendra copies the gazette. Match it exactly.

❌

Second change already used

Marriage plus one earlier correction leaves nothing for the reversion. Check before filing the gazette; the exception route is slow.

❌

Address proof still at the marital home

The C/o line stays. Bring a proof at your current address.

❌

Gazette address different from the Aadhaar address

UIDAI expects them to match; use the same address on the affidavit, the gazette and the Kendra form.

❌

PAN or bank before Aadhaar

Both read Aadhaar. Do it first.

FAQ & People Also Ask

Name Change in Aadhaar Card After Divorce in West Bengal: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change my name in Aadhaar after divorce in West Bengal?

Get the gazette notification first: the Kolkata Gazette Part II, Change of Surname, Annexure II, with the decree uploaded, issued within 7 days of a complete file. Then visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with the gazette page, your current Aadhaar and the decree, fill the update form with the maiden name, give biometrics, pay the update fee (Rs 50 per UIDAI's schedule) and keep the URN. The updated e-Aadhaar is downloadable once approved.

Is the divorce decree enough to change my Aadhaar name?

Usually not. A decree records that the marriage ended; it is not among the documents the Kendra accepts as proof of a change of name unless it carries a specific clause restoring your maiden name, and even then acceptance varies. The gazette notification is the document that works. The state gazette is enough for Aadhaar.

Which gazette do I need for Aadhaar after divorce?

The Kolkata Gazette Part II is enough for Aadhaar, PAN, bank and state records: online, Rs 1,100, about 7 days. The Gazette of India is needed only if a passport or use outside West Bengal is also involved.

Can I change my Aadhaar name after divorce online?

A name change needs biometric authentication, so it is done at a Seva Kendra or enrolment centre. Address and mobile updates may be online; the name is in person.

What is the fee for the Aadhaar update after divorce?

Rs 50 for a demographic update per UIDAI's schedule, paid at the Kendra; more if biometrics are also updated. Confirm the current amount at the counter.

My Aadhaar address shows my ex-husband's name in the C/o line. How do I remove it?

Through an address update at the same visit. The C/o (care of) line is part of the address, not the name; give a new address proof at your current home, in your name or with a supporting document, and the C/o line is replaced or dropped.

How many times can I change my Aadhaar name?

Twice in a lifetime. If you changed it on marriage, the reversion after divorce is your second and last. Decide the exact form of the name once, and check the spelling on the gazette before the Kendra visit.

What if I have already used both name changes?

UIDAI has an exception route through its Regional Office, with the gazette and a written request; it is slow and case by case. Avoid it by deciding the final name before the reversion.

Do I need to change Aadhaar before PAN and the bank?

Yes. PAN is verified against Aadhaar and banks read Aadhaar for KYC. Gazette, then Aadhaar, then PAN, then bank.

What if I keep my married name after divorce?

Nothing changes on Aadhaar for the name. Update only the address, and the C/o line, if you have moved.

How long does the Aadhaar update take after divorce?

Days to a couple of weeks after the Kendra visit in most cases; track the URN on uidai.gov.in. Add about a week before that for the state gazette.

Do my children's Aadhaar records change after my divorce?

Not because of your name change. A child's name or the parent's name recorded on the child's Aadhaar is updated separately, with the child's documents and the custody order where relevant.
