Remove Surname in West Bengal: Deletion of Surname, and the Single-Name Questions First
Dropping a surname is expressly allowed here: the Kolkata Gazette Part II covers deletion of surname under the same clause as any other surname change, online, in about a week. The filing is the easy part. What deserves an hour of thought first is what a single name does to a passport, a visa form and a foreign university portal. This guide gives both sides, then the steps.

How to Remove Your Surname in West Bengal (Quick Answer)
Swear an affidavit before a First Class Judicial Magistrate stating that you delete the surname and shall be known by your first name alone, with the reason; publish one notice in a Bengali and an English daily; apply online to the Kolkata Gazette Part II under Change of Surname, Annexure II, paying Rs 1,100 on GRIPS. The notification is issued within 7 days of a complete file. Use the Gazette of India if a passport is involved, if you live outside West Bengal, or for a child. Then update Aadhaar, PAN, bank and the rest, where the single name goes in the name field. Before you file, settle what a single name means for your passport, visas and any foreign application; that is the part people regret skipping.

Why People Remove a Surname and Keep a Single Name in West Bengal
Caste or community signal
The most common reason we see: a surname that announces caste or community, dropped by choice. The gazette needs no justification beyond the affidavit's reason line.
Family estrangement
Dropping a father's or a married surname without adopting another. After divorce, this is deletion rather than reversion.
Religious or spiritual practice
Some orders and traditions use a single name. Where the change is tied to a change of religion, the state route has a separate annexure.
Simplicity or professional identity
Artists, musicians and writers who already work under one name and want documents to match.
Single Name on a Passport and Visa: Check Before You Remove Your Surname
Indian passports have separate fields for given name and surname, and single-name passports are issued. The friction is outside India. A blank surname triggers automated flags in airline and immigration databases. The UAE does not accept a blank surname for entry. Indian carriers have refused boarding to single-name passengers under international norms, later relaxed for passengers whose visas carry more than one name or whose passports show a father's or family name. The US, UK and Schengen countries have workarounds, usually repeating the given name in the surname box or using a placeholder. Foreign universities, visa portals and overseas banks often reject a blank family name outright.
If a passport, a visa, study or work abroad is anywhere in your next few years, ask the passport office and, where relevant, the embassy how they will record a single name before you file the gazette. Reversing later costs another gazette and one of your two Aadhaar name changes.
A middle path
Some people keep a short surname on documents and use the single name socially and professionally. Others move the surname to a middle name. Both avoid the foreign-form problem. How the passport office reads a name change.
Deletion of Surname in Kolkata Gazette Part II: What Annexure II Allows
The 17 May 2023 guideline lists, among the notifications it admits, change of surname including deletion of surname. It sits in the same category as a married surname or a reversion, with the same fee of Rs 1,100 and the same online undertaking, Annexure II. No certificate is required, because no office issues one for a personal decision; the affidavit carries the reason.
Two limits to note. The applicant must be 18 or above and a West Bengal resident for this route. And if you are also changing your first name, the category becomes Change of Name, Annexure I, and the newspaper notice must say so.
Central route
The Gazette of India has no separate surname category at all; the proforma simply records the new name, so a single name is written as the new name. Needed for the passport, for minors, and for applicants outside West Bengal. Surname change in West Bengal: every reason and route.
Affidavit and Newspaper Wording for Removing a Surname

That I have deleted the surname [Surname] from my name and shall henceforth be known as [First Name] alone for all purposes; that [Old Full Name] and [First Name] are one and the same person, namely myself.

Newspaper notice
I, [Old Full Name], son/daughter of [Father], residing at [Address], have deleted my surname and shall hereafter be known as [First Name]. Both names refer to one and the same person.

Removing a Child's Surname in West Bengal: Central Gazette Only
A child's surname can be deleted only through the Gazette of India, with a parent as applicant at Rs 1,700, and where both parents have rights both should sign. Beyond the paperwork, a single name follows a child through school admission forms, board registration, competitive exams and a first passport, systems that are less forgiving than an adult's bank. If the reason is caste, weigh keeping a neutral surname instead of none.

Mistakes and Regrets When Removing a Surname From Your Name
Filing before thinking about the passport
The single most common regret. Ask the passport office first; reversing costs another gazette and an Aadhaar change.
Deleting the surname and changing the first name in one Annexure II file
That is a change of name, Annexure I. Mixed files are returned.
Using the old surname on forms after publication
Every form must now carry the single name, or the mismatch defeats the gazette.
Not asking the board before filing
Correcting an issued marksheet is harder than choosing the name before one exists.
Assuming Aadhaar can be changed again later
Two name changes in a lifetime. A deletion now and a restoration later uses both.
Notary affidavit for the state route
The portal wants a Magistrate's affidavit number.
Remove Surname in West Bengal: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I legally remove my surname in West Bengal?
Yes. The Kolkata Gazette Part II guideline of 17 May 2023 expressly lists deletion of surname among admissible notifications, filed as Change of Surname under Annexure II at Rs 1,100, issued within 7 days of a complete file. You swear an affidavit before a First Class Judicial Magistrate, publish a newspaper notice, and apply online. Nothing in Indian law requires a person to carry a surname.
How do I remove my surname from Aadhaar, PAN and the bank?
With the gazette notification. Aadhaar at a Seva Kendra, PAN as a correction on the existing card, the bank with a KYC form. Each records the single name in the name field; some systems then show the same word in first-name and last-name boxes, which is normal and not an error you need to fix.
Can I have a passport with a single name?
Passport Seva issues passports where the given name and surname fields are handled according to its rules for applicants without a surname; in practice the single name may be printed in the given-name field with the surname field left blank or repeated. Several countries' immigration systems handle blank surname fields poorly, and some visa applications reject them. Decide the passport and travel question before you drop the surname, not after.
Will a single name cause problems abroad?
It can. Airlines, visa portals, foreign universities and banks often require both a given name and a family name. Indians with mononyms do travel and study abroad, but they meet extra checks and occasionally have to add a surname later. If study or work abroad is likely, weigh that before filing.
What does the affidavit say for a surname deletion?
That you, [full name], son or daughter of [father], residing at [address], have deleted the surname [surname] from your name and shall henceforth be known as [first name] alone for all purposes, and that both the earlier name and the new name are one and the same person, with the reason stated. Signed in the old full name.
Which gazette do I need to remove a surname?
The Kolkata Gazette Part II for Aadhaar, PAN, bank, voter ID and state records: online, Rs 1,100, within 7 days. The Gazette of India for a passport, for a minor, or if you live outside West Bengal: by post, Rs 1,100, 30 to 45 days.
Is dropping a caste surname the same process?
Yes. Many people drop a surname that signals caste or community; the route is the same deletion of surname under Annexure II, with the reason stated in the affidavit. No certificate is needed for the reason.
Can I remove my surname and keep using it socially?
Yes, but your documents will carry the single name and every form must match it. Using the old surname on a form after the gazette creates the mismatch the gazette existed to prevent.
How long does it take?
About two weeks from a standing start on the state route, including the affidavit and newspaper; five to seven weeks on the central route. Then Aadhaar in days, PAN and bank in a couple of weeks.
Can I add a surname back later?
Yes, as another change of surname, with a fresh gazette. Remember Aadhaar allows only two name changes in a lifetime, so a deletion now and an addition later may use both.
Can a child's surname be removed?
Only through the Gazette of India with a parent as applicant, and it is worth more thought than for an adult: school, board and passport systems are less forgiving of a single name for a child.
Do boards and universities accept a single name?
Most do, with the gazette and an endorsement or linking letter. Ask your board in writing before filing, because reissuing an old marksheet is harder than getting a new document right.
Which countries refuse a blank surname?
The UAE does not accept a blank surname for entry. Airlines have refused boarding to single-name passengers under international norms, with relaxations where the visa carries more than one name or the passport shows a father's or family name. The US, UK and Schengen countries accept workarounds, usually repeating the given name in the surname field or using a placeholder. Plan for questions at every counter.
If I regret it, how hard is it to add a surname back?
It is another gazette and another passport reissue, and adding a surname is treated as a name change, so police verification usually applies. It also uses your second and last Aadhaar name change if you have already used one. That is the reason to decide once.
