Name Correction in Marksheet and School Certificate in West Bengal: The School Record Decides
Board corrections do not start at the board. They start at your school, because both West Bengal boards decide on what the admission register recorded when the child was first admitted. This guide gives the WBBSE form and its attestations, the Higher Secondary Council's online route, the fee counters, the adoption and remarriage clauses, and the cases where a gazette has to come first.

How to Correct a Name on a Marksheet or School Certificate in West Bengal (Quick Answer)
Apply through your school. For Madhyamik records, fill the WBBSE record correction form (Form No. WBBSE/02) for the candidate's name, father's or mother's name, surname, middle name or date of birth, and attach attested photocopies of the Registration Certificate, Admit Card, Marksheet and Pass Certificate, together with the relevant pages of the school's Admission Register, attested by the Head of Institution and countersigned by the District Inspector or Assistant District Inspector of Schools. The school forwards it; on approval the fee is deposited by cash challan in triplicate at the board's cash section, 77/2 Park Street, Kolkata 16 for the Kolkata region, or at your Regional Examination Council Office. For Higher Secondary records, the Council runs an online student portal for correction and duplicate applications, again starting through the school. A gazette is needed only where the name is being changed rather than corrected.

Why the School Admission Register Decides a Marksheet Name Correction
A board does not hold a birth record. What it holds is what the school sent up at registration, and the school took that from its admission register. That is why WBBSE's instructions ask for photocopies of the relevant pages of the high school admission register, and of the primary school register where the first admission happened, attested by the Head of Institution and countersigned by the District Inspector or Assistant District Inspector of Schools.
The practical consequence: if the register carries the correct name and the marksheet does not, the correction is straightforward. If the register itself carries the wrong name, settle that with the school first, because the board will read the register, not your affidavit.
Before the child's registration
Names are easiest to fix before board registration in Class IX. Once a registration certificate, admit card and marksheet exist in a name, every later correction touches four documents instead of one. Fix the birth certificate early too.

Marksheet Name Change After Adoption or Remarriage: Board Conditions
Adoption
WBBSE's instructions allow a change of father's name, surname or middle name on an attested copy of the adoption deed with the competent authority's order, and set a condition that the adoption was made below 15 years of age of the adoptive child and before board registration. Adoption and the gazette.
Remarriage
An attested marriage registration certificate appears in the board's document list for the remarriage case. Ask what the board issues: a corrected document, or an endorsement.
Die-in-harness and service cases
The board's list includes the service book and death certificate of the father, attested, where employment on those grounds is involved.
Community and religious certificates
Where a caste or baptism certificate is relied on, the board asks that it was prepared before registration or before the examination, and attested.
These conditions come from the board's own instruction sheet and change from time to time; read the current version for your case.
When a Gazette Is Needed for a Marksheet Name Change
Boards correct what they got wrong. They do not rename people. If you are asking for a name that never appeared in the school record, that is a change of name, and the board will want the gazette notification and the newspaper pages as the basis, if it will act at all. Many boards will not reprint an old marksheet for a changed name and issue an endorsement or a linking letter instead, which is enough for employers and universities.
For a child still in school, the sequence is better: gazette first, then the school record, and the board never sees an old name. For someone who left school years ago, ask the board in writing what it will do before filing anything.
Which gazette
Kolkata Gazette Part II for an adult and West Bengal records, about a week. Gazette of India for a child under 18, for a passport, or for a board outside the state. Which gazette for which case.
Kolkata Gazette Part II Process for a Board Name Change
Where the board wants a published notification, an adult resident of West Bengal with no passport involved uses the Kolkata Gazette Part II, published in about a week. For a student under 18 this route is closed and the central one below applies.
Fix the exact new name
Spelling, spacing and surname order, decided once and used identically on the affidavit, both newspapers, the gazette application and the board's correction form.
Affidavit before a First Class Judicial Magistrate
The Part II portal asks for the affidavit number and the Magistrate's name, so a notary will not serve for this route. On non-judicial stamp paper, with the declaration that both names refer to one and the same person. Sign in the old name.
Notices in two daily newspapers
One Bengali and one English daily, classified text under change of name. Keep the complete pages with masthead and date, not clippings.
Apply on the Part II portal
Change of Name, or Change of Surname where only the surname moves, with identity proof under 2 MB and a photograph under 100 KB.
Pay Rs 1,100 on GRIPS
The state fee, online, against your own reference. Nobody should collect it in cash.
Download within about a week, then apply to the board
Issued within 7 days of a complete file. It goes into the school's correction application as the proof of the new name.
Central Gazette Process for a Board Name Change
The Gazette of India is the route where the student is a minor, where a passport is also being changed, or where the family lives outside West Bengal. For a school student this is usually the only available route, because the state gazette is open to applicants aged 18 and above.
Fix the exact new name
Everything after this copies it: the affidavit, both newspapers, the proforma, the birth certificate work, Aadhaar and finally the board record.
Notarised affidavit, sworn by a parent for a minor
On non-judicial stamp paper, giving the old and new full name, parentage, address and the reason, with the one-and-the-same-person declaration. A notary is enough here, unlike the state route. For a child the parent deposes, and both parents signing is the safer practice. Signed in the old name, sworn close to filing.
Notices in two daily newspapers
One Bengali and one English daily, published in the parent's name on behalf of the child where the student is a minor. Keep the complete pages and buy two or three copies of each.
Typed proforma with two witnesses
The Department of Publication's own proforma, typed rather than handwritten, carrying the old and new name, signed by two witnesses who sign in the old name.
Pay on BharatKosh
Rs 1,700 for a minor and Rs 1,100 for an adult, higher from abroad, plus a charge per alias where the file carries one. Paid online against your own reference.
Post the file to Delhi in your own name
Affidavit, both complete newspaper pages, the typed proforma, the child's birth certificate, the parents' identity proof, photographs, the BharatKosh receipt, and a soft copy with a certificate that it matches the typed text. To the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Agents may not file in their own name.
Publication, then the free download
Usually 30 to 45 days, downloaded free from egazette.gov.in. Check it the same day, because the corrigendum window is limited. Then the school forwards the board application with it attached.
State or central, in one line
Student aged 18 or over, no passport, living in West Bengal: state, about a week, Rs 1,100. Under 18, passport involved, or outside the state: central, 30 to 45 days, Rs 1,700 for a minor. Most school cases are central.
After the Marksheet Correction: Match Aadhaar, Passport and PAN
Aadhaar
Update it to the corrected name if it does not already match; the board record is usually the anchor for a student.
Birth certificate
If it disagrees with the corrected board record, fix the wrong one at its source. The Registrar route.
Passport, PAN and bank
Boards and universities are the documents employers verify; keep the passport and PAN in the same name.
University and later marksheets
Ask the university to correct its record against the corrected board document, before a job or visa verification.
Mistakes That Stall a Marksheet Name Correction
Going to the board without the school
Both boards route corrections through the institution. A file without the Head of Institution's attestation does not start.
Missing the D.I. or A.D.I. countersignature
The admission register pages need it. This is the most common single reason a Madhyamik correction comes back.
Asking a board to grant a new name
Boards correct errors. A new name needs the gazette first, and often produces an endorsement rather than a reprint.
Paying before approval
WBBSE fees are deposited after the competent authority approves the correction. Do not pay an agent in advance for a board fee.
Leaving it for years
Older records are harder to trace and the school may have changed hands. Correct it while the student is in school or soon after the result.
Correcting the marksheet and nothing else
Aadhaar, birth certificate and passport must agree with it, or the next verification fails anyway.
Name Correction in Marksheet and School Certificate in West Bengal: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I correct my name on a Madhyamik marksheet in West Bengal?
Through your school, not directly at the board. Download the WBBSE record correction form (Form No. WBBSE/02) from the board's website, fill it for correction of the candidate's name, father's or mother's name, surname, middle name or date of birth, and attach attested photocopies of the Registration Certificate, Admit Card, Marksheet and Pass Certificate, plus the relevant pages of the school's Admission Register attested by the Head of Institution and countersigned by the District Inspector or Assistant District Inspector of Schools. The school forwards it; on approval you deposit the fee by cash challan at the board's cash section.
Where is the WBBSE correction fee paid?
On approval from the competent authority, the applicant deposits the fee by cash challan filled in triplicate at the board's cash section at 77/2 Park Street, Kolkata 16 for districts under the Kolkata Regional Council, and at the concerned Regional Examination Council Office for other districts. Confirm the current amount and counter timings with the board before travelling.
How do I correct my name on a Higher Secondary marksheet?
The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education runs an online student portal, live since September 2023, for duplicate and correction applications covering registration, admit card, marksheet and certificate. The application still starts with your Higher Secondary school, which verifies and forwards it, and a fee applies; check the portal for the current amount and format.
Do I need a gazette to correct my marksheet?
For a genuine clerical error, usually not: the school record and the board's own documents carry it. A gazette is needed where the name is being changed rather than corrected, such as a new name, a surname added or dropped, or a change after marriage or adoption. Ask the board in writing which it treats your case as before you spend anything.
What is the single most important document?
The school's Admission Register page. Board corrections are decided on what the school recorded when the child was first admitted, attested by the Head of Institution and countersigned by the D.I. or A.D.I. of Schools. If the register itself is wrong, that has to be settled with the school first.
Can the board correct a name after an adoption?
WBBSE's instructions provide for a change of father's name, surname or middle name where a photocopy of the deed of adoption with the order of the competent authority is attested, and its condition is that the adoption must have been made below 15 years of age of the adoptive child and before registration by the board. Read the board's current instruction sheet for your case.
What if my surname changed after marriage or remarriage?
WBBSE's document list includes a marriage registration certificate in the remarriage case, attested. Many boards do not reprint an old marksheet for a married surname and instead issue an endorsement or a linking letter; ask what your board does before assuming a reprint.
How long does a marksheet correction take?
A few weeks to a few months, depending on the board, the region and how old the record is. Duplicate and correction applications at the Higher Secondary Council are commonly quoted at around 15 to 30 days once accepted; older records take longer to trace.
Can I apply directly to the board without the school?
No. Both boards route corrections through the institution: the Head of Institution attests the copies and the admission register pages, and the school forwards the file. If the school has closed, ask the board's regional office how to proceed.
What about CBSE and ICSE schools in West Bengal?
Those boards have their own correction processes and their own windows, usually tied to the school's records and the board's regional office. The principle is the same: the school record decides, and a name change rather than a correction needs the gazette.
Is there a deadline for correcting a marksheet?
Boards prefer corrections close to the examination, and older records get harder to trace and to verify. Do it while the child is still in school or immediately after the result, not years later when a job or a visa depends on it.
What if my marksheet and Aadhaar do not match?
Correct whichever is wrong at its source. If the board record is right, update Aadhaar to match it. If the board record is wrong, correct it through the school. Never leave the two disagreeing before a job or admission verification.
