Date of Birth Correction in West Bengal: One Aadhaar Change in a Lifetime
Which is why the order matters more here than anywhere else on this site. Fix the record everything is copied from first, ordinarily the birth certificate and the board certificate, and spend the Aadhaar change last. Do it the other way round and you can end up with a corrected Aadhaar that now disagrees with your school record, and no second change left.

Correcting a Date of Birth in West Bengal (Quick Answer)
Work out which record is the source, ordinarily the birth certificate, and correct that first through the registrar that recorded the birth. Then correct the board record if you went to school here, using the WBBSE record correction form routed through your school to the regional office covering it. Only then update Aadhaar, because you get one date of birth change in a lifetime and it cannot be done online, only at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with an eligible proof. Then PAN and everything downstream. Two things people trip on: the Madhyamik marksheet carries no date of birth, the passing certificate does; and a gazette does not change a date of birth, because the authority holding the record is what decides.
| Order | Record | Who decides | Why it comes here |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Birth certificate | The registrar that recorded the birth | Treated as the primary proof of a date of birth |
| 2 | Board record and certificate | WBBSE, through your school | What employers and universities actually read |
| 3 | Aadhaar | UIDAI, at a Seva Kendra | One change in a lifetime; do not waste it |
| 4 | PAN | The PAN issuer | Verified against Aadhaar |
| 5 | Passport, bank, service records | Each authority | All copy from the records above |
| Never | A gazette notification | Nobody | It declares; it does not correct a record |

Aadhaar Date of Birth Correction: One Change, Only at a Seva Kendra
UIDAI allows a date of birth update once in the lifetime of an Aadhaar number under the standard process. Its framework distinguishes a date recorded as declared or approximate from one verified against a document, and a declared date can be moved to a verified one using an eligible proof.
Once that permitted change is used, a further routine request is generally not available. Anything beyond it is considered only in exceptional circumstances, with the UIDAI helpline on 1947 as the route.
And it is not a self-service change on myAadhaar. Expect a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or authorised centre with the original proof.
For anyone under 18
The rules are stricter. UIDAI's framework requires a birth certificate for a date of birth update for a resident minor, so the birth record has to be right first in any event.
Find the Source Record Your Date of Birth Was Copied From
A date of birth spreads. It was written once, then copied into a school register, then onto a certificate, then into Aadhaar, then into PAN, a passport, a bank record and a service file. Correcting a copy while the original still says something else guarantees the problem comes back.
So before doing anything, ask where the wrong date started. For most people that is the birth certificate. For someone whose birth was registered late, or never, the school admission register may be the oldest record in existence, and that changes the order of work.
The expensive version of this mistake
Using your one Aadhaar change to match a school certificate, then discovering the school certificate itself was wrong. There is no second change to fix it with.
Date of Birth Correction in a West Bengal Birth Certificate
A wrong entry in the birth register is a correction by the registrar under the birth and death registration law, made by the local body that registered the birth. It is not a gazette matter and never was.
Where the birth was registered in a hospital or nursing home, some municipalities require the hospital record to be corrected first before they will act, which adds a step people do not expect.
The birth certificate guide sets out the West Bengal portal, the four different services behind it, and what the Health Department directive tightened.
Keep the old certificate
Where a corrected certificate is issued, some authorities also want to see the earlier incorrect one. Do not discard it.
WBBSE Date of Birth Correction: The Board Record Route
The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education corrects candidate details, including the date of birth, the candidate's name, and a parent's or guardian's name, through its record correction form, available from the board's website. Applications are ordinarily routed through your school, which verifies against its own register.
The board works through four regional offices, and your case goes to the one covering your school:
- Kolkata, Derozio Bhawan, Block DJ-8, Sector II, Karunamoyee, Bidhannagar, Kolkata 700091
- Burdwan, Nazrul Bhavan, Ichlabad, Sripally, Bardhaman 713103
- North Bengal, Rahul Sankrityayan Bhavan, North Bengal University, Darjeeling 734013
- Medinipur, Sahid Matangini Bhavan, Bidhannagar East, 72 Station Road, Paschim Medinipur 721101
Timelines to plan around
School verification commonly takes a week or two, and board processing is generally quoted at 30 to 60 days, with older cases longer. Start well before any deadline that depends on it.
Madhyamik Admit Card Date of Birth Errors: Two Deadlines
The board splits admit card corrections by type of error, and the two halves have different deadlines.
Before the examination. Errors in the photograph, gender or subject must be reported to the regional office by a stated date, because they affect the sitting itself.
After the examination. Corrections to the name, a parent's name or the date of birth are dealt with in a window the board announces once the examination is over.
So a wrong date of birth on an admit card is not an emergency on exam day. A candidate can generally sit with a minor discrepancy provided the registration certificate matches their identity.
What to carry to the office
A written application, the original registration certificate and the admit card, supporting documents, and the prescribed fee. Corrections are processed on payment.
Madhyamik Marksheet Has No Date of Birth: Use the Admit Card
This one catches people constantly. The West Bengal board marksheet shows results, not a date of birth. The passing certificate is the document that carries it.
So when an office asks for a class 10 document as proof of your date of birth, whether that is UIDAI at a Seva Kendra or an employer, producing the marksheet achieves nothing. Take the certificate.
It is also why people wrongly conclude their board record is fine: they check the marksheet, see no date, and assume there is nothing to correct.
Check both
The registration certificate, the admit card and the passing certificate should all agree with each other and with the birth certificate. Reading all four together takes five minutes and shows you the real problem.
Old Date of Birth Corrections: Prior Permission and Court Orders
A correction raised at the time is administrative. One raised many years after passing is examined far more strictly, because a date of birth affects service tenure, retirement and eligibility, and boards are alive to that.
For older cases the board may require its prior permission before an application is entertained at all, and a substantial change, as opposed to a clerical slip, may need a court order. Ask the board or your school what applies to your passing year before preparing anything, because this is the point at which people are turned away.
Government service records
If you are in government service, a date of birth in your service book is governed by your own service rules and is usually harder to change than any of this. Take that up with your department first.
If WBBSE Refuses a Date of Birth Correction
Get the refusal in writing, with reasons. Without it nothing further is possible.
The remedy after that is legal: a notice, and if necessary a declaration suit in the civil court for an order the board can act on. That is a lawyer's work, and it is more commonly needed for a date of birth than for a name, because the change matters more and the evidence is older.
What nobody can promise
An outcome. Anyone offering to reverse a board refusal without a court is describing something they cannot do, and we will say so rather than take the work.
Can a Gazette Change Your Date of Birth? No
A gazette notification is a public declaration. It announces something; it does not rewrite anybody's register. It does not alter your birth certificate, your board record, your Aadhaar or your service file, and publication alone changes nothing.
Even where a gazette is genuinely useful as supporting proof, you still apply separately to each authority afterwards, and for a date of birth the authority that holds the record is what actually decides: the registrar, the board, or a court.
We say this knowing it costs us work. Pages that promise a gazette will make a new date of birth valid everywhere are selling something the document does not do.
When it does have a place
Where your name is also changing, or where an authority expressly asks for a published declaration in support. Both routes are below, so you can see what each involves before deciding.
Kolkata Gazette Part II for a Name Change, Step by Step
The state route, for an adult resident of West Bengal with no passport involved. About a week, at Rs 1,100. Used for a change of name rather than as a cure for a date of birth.
Fix the exact new name
Spelt identically on the affidavit, both newspapers, the gazette and every record afterwards.
Affidavit before a First Class Judicial Magistrate
The Part II portal asks for the affidavit number and the Magistrate's name, so a notary will not serve on this route. Sign in the old name.
Notices in two daily newspapers
One Bengali and one English daily, complete pages kept with masthead and date.
Apply on the Part II portal
Identity proof under 2 MB, photograph under 100 KB.
Pay Rs 1,100 on GRIPS
Online, against your application number.
Download, then apply to each authority
Issued in about a week. The publication is proof, not a correction.
Gazette of India Name Change Route, in Detail
Used where a passport is also changing, where the person is a minor, or where you live outside West Bengal. Filed by post, and slower at 30 to 45 days.
Swear a notarised affidavit
On stamp paper, before a notary, which this route accepts.
Publish a newspaper advertisement
Keep the original page, since a clipping alone is often refused.
Prepare the prescribed proforma
Typed, not handwritten, signed by two witnesses with their addresses.
Sign in the old name
Deponent and witnesses both. The step most often got wrong, and it sends the file back.
Pay on BharatKosh
Rs 1,100 for an adult, Rs 1,700 for a minor, Rs 3,500 from abroad. Keep the receipt.
Post the file to the Department of Publication
Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, in your own name. Agents are not permitted to file for you.
Download from egazette.gov.in
Free, in 30 to 45 days. Then apply to each authority separately, because the gazette on its own corrects nothing.
Which gazette a case needs, compared side by side.
Date of Birth Correction: Frequently Asked Questions
How many times can I change my date of birth on Aadhaar?
Once in a lifetime under the standard process. UIDAI's framework distinguishes a date of birth recorded as declared or approximate from one verified against a document, and a declared date can be changed to a verified one using an eligible proof. Once that permitted correction is used, a further routine request is generally not available, and anything more is considered only in exceptional circumstances through the UIDAI helpline on 1947.
Can I do it online?
No. A date of birth update is not available as a self-service change on the myAadhaar portal and generally requires a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or an authorised update centre with the original proof. Plan for a visit rather than expecting to do it from home.
What is the biggest mistake people make?
Spending the one Aadhaar change before the underlying record is right. Fix the record that everything else is copied from first, ordinarily the birth certificate or the board certificate, and only then take the correct date to Aadhaar. Doing it the other way round can leave you with a corrected Aadhaar that now disagrees with the school record, and no second change available.
Which record is the source?
For most people it is the birth certificate, which is treated as the primary proof of a date of birth. For anyone who has been through school in West Bengal, the board record matters just as much, because employers, universities and government recruiters read the Madhyamik certificate as the authoritative document.
My Madhyamik marksheet does not show a date of birth.
That is correct and it catches people out constantly. The West Bengal board marksheet does not carry a date of birth; the passing certificate does. So if you are producing school documents as proof of your date of birth, whether to UIDAI or anyone else, it is the certificate you need, not the marksheet.
How do I correct the board record?
Through the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, using its record correction form, with the application ordinarily routed through your school. The board has four regional offices, at Kolkata, Burdwan, North Bengal and Medinipur, and your case goes to the one covering your school.
When can a Madhyamik admit card error be corrected?
The board splits this by error type. Errors in the photograph, gender or subject have to be reported before the examination, by a stated deadline. Corrections to the name, a parent's name or the date of birth are dealt with after the examination, in a window the board announces. You can generally sit the examination with a minor discrepancy provided your registration certificate matches your identity.
What do I send with a board correction application?
A written application, the original registration certificate and admit card, supporting documents including the birth certificate, and the prescribed fee, which is payable as the board directs. School verification usually takes a week or two and board processing is commonly quoted at 30 to 60 days, with older cases taking longer.
Is there a time limit?
Practically, yes. A correction sought long after passing is examined far more strictly than one raised at the time, and older cases can require the board's prior permission before an application is even entertained. Ask the board or your school what applies to your year rather than assuming, because this is the point on which people are turned away.
What if the board refuses?
Ask for the refusal in writing with reasons. Beyond that the remedy is legal: a notice, and if necessary a declaration suit in the civil court for an order the board can act on. That is a lawyer's work, and a substantial change of date of birth is more likely to end up there than a name correction would.
Does a gazette change my date of birth?
No. A gazette notification is a public declaration, not a correction of anyone's record. It does not alter your birth certificate, your board record, your Aadhaar or anything else by itself. Even after publication you still apply separately to each authority, and for a date of birth the authority holding the record is what actually decides.
What do you handle?
Gazette notifications and affidavit documentation. For a date of birth we will usually tell you that the gazette is not your answer and point you at the registrar or the board instead, because that is where a date of birth is actually fixed.

Do Not Spend the Aadhaar Change First
It is the one step you cannot undo, and it should be the last one you take, not the first. Send us what your birth certificate and board certificate say and we will tell you where the wrong date started, and whether a gazette has any part to play at all. Usually it does not. Monday to Saturday, across West Bengal.
