PAN Card Name Change in West Bengal: A Correction, Not a New Card
Your PAN number stays with you for life. What changes is the information attached to it, through a correction filed on Protean or UTIITSL, with Aadhaar e-KYC as the fast paperless route. This guide covers which portal to use, the form that replaced the old one in April 2026, why published fees disagree with each other, and the resubmission mistake that gets two applications rejected instead of one.

How to Change Your Name on a PAN Card (Quick Answer)
File a correction, not a new PAN. Update Aadhaar first, then go to the portal named on the back of your card, Protean (formerly NSDL) or UTIITSL, and choose changes or correction in existing PAN data. Since April 2026 an individual uses form CR-01. Tick the name field, enter the new name exactly as your proof prints it, upload the proof, authenticate with Aadhaar e-KYC, pay and save the acknowledgement number. The PAN number does not change. An e-PAN commonly arrives within a few working days and the physical card in about 15 to 20 days. If it sits under processing, do not apply again, because a duplicate application can get both rejected.

| What it is | A correction to an existing PAN, not a new card and never a second PAN |
| PAN number | Unchanged, for life |
| Where | Protean, formerly NSDL, or UTIITSL; the back of your card names the issuer |
| Form | CR-01 for individuals, CR-02 for non-individuals, standardised from April 2026 |
| Authentication | Aadhaar e-KYC is paperless and fastest; scanned or physical submission also possible |
| Fee | Published figures differ, roughly Rs 50 to Rs 110 for an Indian address, more for a foreign one; confirm on the portal |
| Time | e-PAN in a few working days; physical card about 15 to 20 days |
| Proof | Gazette for a change of name; an ID in the correct name for a spelling correction |
| Order | Aadhaar first, then PAN, then bank and passport |
| Pending application | Track it; do not file a second one |
A PAN Name Change Is a Correction, and the Number Stays for Life
People arrive expecting to apply for a new PAN in the new name. That is the one thing you must not do. A PAN is allotted once and stays with you; a correction updates the name, father's name, date of birth, photograph or signature attached to it, and the card is reissued with the same number.
Holding two PANs is not permitted. If you have somehow been allotted a second one, the answer is to surrender the extra rather than to keep both or to correct one and ignore the other.
What you can fix in one request
Name, father's name, date of birth, photograph, signature and address together in a single correction. One application, one fee, rather than filing four times.
Update Aadhaar Before PAN, Not After
PAN correction offers Aadhaar-based e-KYC, which pulls your details across and removes the need to post anything. That only helps if Aadhaar already carries the new name. The two records are also cross-checked for PAN-Aadhaar linking, income tax filing and bank KYC, and a mismatch between them is the usual reason linking fails. What to do when linking fails on a name mismatch.
So the order is gazette, then Aadhaar, then PAN. Correcting PAN against an Aadhaar you are about to change means doing the same job twice and paying twice.

Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL: Where to Apply for PAN Name Change
Two agencies handle PAN work: Protean, formerly NSDL e-Governance, and UTIITSL. The reverse of every PAN card names the one that issued it. Either can process a correction for any PAN, but going back to the agency that already holds your record generally means fewer questions.
Both take the application online, both offer Aadhaar e-KYC, and both give you a reference number to track. UTIITSL calls it a coupon number and Protean an acknowledgement number; they do the same job.
Thirty seconds well spent
Turn the card over before you start. It saves choosing the wrong portal and re-entering everything.
How to Apply for PAN Card Name Change Online, Step by Step
Open the correction option
Changes or correction in existing PAN data on your agency's portal. Choose the applicant category, individual for most readers, and enter your PAN.
Use the current form
Since April 2026, corrections run on standardised forms: CR-01 for individuals, CR-02 for non-individual applicants. A token or reference number lets you resume a half-finished form.
Tick the name field and enter the new name
Exactly as the proof prints it. Fix any other wrong field in the same request rather than filing again later.
Choose Aadhaar e-KYC
The paperless route; nothing is printed or posted. Scanned upload and physical submission remain available if e-KYC will not work for you.
Pay and save the acknowledgement
Read the fee shown on the portal at that moment. Save the acknowledgement or coupon number; you need it to track and you cannot recover it easily.
Collect the e-PAN, then the card
The e-PAN commonly arrives in a few working days, the physical card in about 15 to 20 days including verification and courier.
Documents Accepted for PAN Card Name Change
| Your case | Proof that works |
|---|---|
| Spelling wrong on the card | An existing ID carrying the correct spelling, Aadhaar being the most commonly accepted (correction guide) |
| Full change of name | Gazette notification |
| Surname added or changed after marriage | Marriage certificate alongside your other proof; the gazette where records need to match everywhere |
| Reverting after divorce | Gazette, with the decree as support |
| Father's name wrong | Same correction request, with proof of the correct name (how) |
| Date of birth wrong | Birth certificate, passport or marksheet, in the same request |

PAN Card Name Change Fee: Why Sources Disagree
Search this and you will find Rs 50, Rs 72, Rs 93 plus GST, Rs 107 and Rs 110 for an Indian communication address, and figures from several hundred to about a thousand rupees for a foreign one. They are not all wrong; they reflect different services, an e-PAN against a physical card, and different points in time, because the fee is revised periodically.
The practical rule: the amount that matters is the one the portal displays when you reach the payment screen. Treat every published figure, this page included, as a rough guide to what to expect rather than a quote.
Cheaper option
If you do not need a plastic card, the e-PAN only route is usually less. You can download an e-PAN copy from your income tax profile once the correction is done.
Track PAN Correction Status and Avoid the Resubmission Trap
Track with the acknowledgement or coupon number on the portal where you applied. If the status sits at under processing for longer than you expected, the instinct is to file again. Do not. A second application filed while one is pending can result in both being rejected, which costs you the fee twice and puts you back at the start.
Follow up with the agency instead, keep the acknowledgement, and give verification the time it takes.
- Save the acknowledgement number the moment you get it
- Check status weekly rather than daily
- Keep the payment receipt and the uploaded proof
- Contact the agency before considering any second application

How do I change my name on a PAN card in West Bengal?
Apply for a correction rather than a new card. Go to Protean, formerly NSDL, or UTIITSL, choose changes or correction in existing PAN data, use the correction form for individuals, tick the name field, enter the new name exactly as your proof shows it, upload the proof, authenticate with Aadhaar e-KYC where you can, pay the fee and keep the acknowledgement number. Your PAN number does not change.
Does my PAN number change?
No. A correction amends the details attached to a PAN that stays with you for life. Nobody should be issuing you a second PAN, because holding two is not permitted; if you have somehow been allotted two, the extra one is surrendered rather than corrected.
Which portal should I use, Protean or UTIITSL?
Look at the back of your PAN card, which names the agency that issued it, and use that portal. Either can process a correction for any PAN, but going back to the agency that already holds your record tends to be smoother.
What form is used in 2026?
Corrections now run on standardised forms introduced from April 2026: CR-01 for individuals and CR-02 for non-individual applicants, filed online through either portal. Older guides referring only to the combined change request form describe the earlier arrangement.
What does a PAN name correction cost?
Published figures differ, which is unusual and worth knowing: sources quote a band of roughly Rs 50 to Rs 110 for an Indian communication address depending on the service chosen, with an e-PAN cheaper than a physical card, and a much higher figure of several hundred to about a thousand rupees for a foreign address. Fees are revised from time to time, so read the amount on the portal at the moment you pay rather than trusting any article, including this one.
Do I need a gazette notification for a PAN name change?
Not for a spelling correction, where an ID carrying the correct name is enough. For a genuine change of name, the gazette is the document that establishes it, and for a change after marriage the marriage certificate may be accepted alongside your other proof. Where Aadhaar has already been updated, matching PAN to Aadhaar is usually straightforward.
How long does it take?
With Aadhaar e-KYC, the e-PAN commonly arrives within a few working days and the physical card in about 15 to 20 days including verification and courier. Allow longer if documents are posted rather than uploaded.
My application has been under processing for weeks. Should I apply again?
No. Filing a second application while one is pending can lead to both being rejected. Track the acknowledgement number on the portal, and follow up with the agency rather than starting over.
Should I change Aadhaar or PAN first?
Aadhaar first. PAN correction offers Aadhaar-based e-KYC, and the two records are cross-checked for linking, tax filing and bank KYC. Correcting PAN to match an Aadhaar that is itself about to change means doing it twice.
Does the name have to match Aadhaar exactly?
It should. A mismatch between PAN and Aadhaar causes trouble with linking, income tax returns, bank KYC and high value transactions, and correcting it is often the step that makes linking succeed.
Can I correct my father's name or date of birth at the same time?
Yes. The correction form takes several fields at once, and one fee covers the application rather than each field, so fix everything that is wrong in a single request instead of filing repeatedly.
Do you handle the PAN step?
We prepare the gazette that PAN accepts as proof of a name change and tell you the correct order of updates. The PAN correction itself is filed by you on the portal, because it uses your own Aadhaar authentication.
