Name Change Consultant in Purba Bardhaman: Your Papers Say Bardhaman, and That Is Fine
That is the question people in this district actually ask, and the answer is short: nothing is wrong. Bardhaman was divided into Purba and Paschim Bardhaman on 7 April 2017, so everything issued before that date correctly says Bardhaman or Burdwan. It is history, not an error, it needs no correction, and no gazette can change a district name anyway.

Name Change in Purba Bardhaman (Quick Answer)
First, the question everyone here asks: a certificate saying Bardhaman rather than Purba Bardhaman is not wrong, because the district was divided on 7 April 2017 and a document records the position when it was issued. No correction, no affidavit, no gazette. Beyond that, the gazette is the same statewide: Part II online, Rs 1,100, about seven days. What is local is the affidavit, before a First Class Judicial Magistrate, and the newspapers. Your SDO is one of four, Bardhaman Sadar North, Bardhaman Sadar South, Kalna or Katwa, and the two Sadar offices sit in the same building, so check which desk you need.

| Subdivision | Office | Character | Municipal towns |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bardhaman Sadar North | Bardhaman court compound | The largest, around a quarter urban | Bardhaman, Guskara |
| Kalna | Kalna | Largely rural | Kalna |
| Katwa | Katwa | Largely rural | Katwa, Dainhat |
| Bardhaman Sadar South | Bardhaman court compound | About 95 per cent rural, despite the name | Blocks and panchayats |

Bardhaman District Split in 2017: Old Papers Need No Correction
On 7 April 2017, Bardhaman district was divided into Purba Bardhaman and Paschim Bardhaman. It is the most recent district reorganisation in West Bengal, and it means a very large number of people are holding documents that name a district which no longer exists in that form.
Your birth certificate, your Madhyamik admit card, your land papers, your old ration card: if issued before that date, they say Bardhaman or Burdwan, with no Purba or Paschim.
All of them are correct. A document records the position on the day it was issued. It did not become false because the state redrew a boundary afterwards.
And no gazette can help
A gazette notifies a change in a person's name. It has nothing to say about which district you live in or what that district was called in 1998. If somebody offers you one for this, they are selling the wrong document.
If Your Area Is Now in Paschim Bardhaman
Some people have the more confusing version of this. They live in what is now Paschim Bardhaman, around Asansol or Durgapur, while every document they hold says simply Bardhaman.
The answer is the same. The district you live in has changed; the document has not become false. You do not correct a certificate because a boundary moved.
What you do need to get right is which office you deal with now. Present-day applications go to your current district and subdivision, whatever your older papers say.
One line is enough
If an officer queries it, explain the 2017 bifurcation in a sentence. Anyone working in this region deals with it constantly and will not find it surprising.
Purba Bardhaman Subdivisions: Sadar North, Sadar South, Kalna and Katwa
A detail worth knowing before you travel: the district administration lists both Sadar subdivision offices at the New Administrative Building, Court Compound, Bardhaman, with different contact numbers.
Bardhaman Sadar North
Office at Bardhaman. The largest and least rural subdivision, with Bardhaman and Guskara municipalities, 64 gram panchayats and the Ausgram, Bhatar, Burdwan and Galsi blocks.
Bardhaman Sadar South
Office at Bardhaman court compound. Around 95 per cent rural despite the name, covering the Khandaghosh, Jamalpur, Memari and Raina blocks.
Kalna
Office at Kalna. One municipality, five blocks, 47 gram panchayats and 525 inhabited villages, covering Kalna, Manteswar and Purbasthali.
Katwa
Office at Katwa. Two municipalities at Katwa and Dainhat, with the Katwa, Ketugram and Mongalkote blocks.
So arriving at the right building is not the same as reaching the right desk. Confirm whether your block sits under Sadar North or Sadar South before you go. The Sub-Divisional Officer is the issuing authority for a caste certificate and sits behind a domicile certificate.
Blocks That Changed Subdivision in 2017, Such as Galsi I
The bifurcation moved more than the district line. The Galsi I block, for example, sat in the Durgapur subdivision before 2017 and sits in Bardhaman Sadar North afterwards, which also moved it into a different district.
So a document can name a subdivision that no longer covers your village, and still be entirely correct for its date. That needs no correction and no affidavit.
What to check instead
Not whether the old name matches today, but which office serves you now. That is the one that will decide your current application.
WBBSE Burdwan Regional Office: Marksheet Name Correction
The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education handles record corrections through regional offices, and the one covering this part of the state is the Burdwan regional office at Nazrul Bhavan, Ichlabad, Sripally, Bardhaman.
Being close to it does not change the process. A board correction still goes through your school, which verifies against its own admission register, on the board's record correction form. What proximity helps with is following up.
How education document corrections work, and the date of birth rules which are stricter again.
The marksheet trap
The board marksheet carries no date of birth. Only the passing certificate does, which catches people out when they produce school documents as age proof.
Birth Certificate Name Correction in Purba Bardhaman: Who Holds Your Record
Purba Bardhaman is around 85 per cent rural, and Bardhaman Sadar South is roughly 95 per cent rural despite carrying the Sadar name. So outside the municipal towns of Bardhaman, Guskara, Kalna, Katwa and Dainhat, a gram panchayat or block office is the likeliest holder of your birth record.
The Kalna subdivision alone has 47 gram panchayats and 525 inhabited villages against a single municipality.
Read the certificate
The registering authority is printed on it, and that is the office that decides a correction. The birth certificate route explains the rest.
Name Change Affidavit in Bardhaman, Kalna or Katwa: Which Court
For the state route the affidavit must be sworn before a First Class Judicial Magistrate, because the Part II portal asks for the affidavit number and the Magistrate's name. A notary will not serve.
The district court is at Bardhaman, in the same compound as the two Sadar subdivision offices, with courts serving Katwa and Kalna.
On the central route a notary is accepted, which is simpler from the Ketugram, Mongalkote or Purbasthali ends of the district.
Sign in the old name
On both routes, and so must your witnesses on the central one. It is the commonest reason a file comes back.
Newspaper Advertisement for Name Change in Purba Bardhaman
The state route asks for notices in one Bengali and one English daily. Choose a Bengali daily that genuinely circulates in your part of the district, which for Katwa or Purbasthali may not be the same title as in Bardhaman town.
Keep the complete page with masthead and date, and proofread the wording against your agreed spelling before it runs, because a notice with an error must be published again at your cost.
Ask for the full page
Not a cutting. Both gazettes want the masthead and date visible, and a clipping alone is often refused centrally.
Choosing a Name Change Agent in Bardhaman: Consultant, Agent or Neither
Neither consultant nor agent is a regulated title, so the word tells you nothing. Judge by three answers: which gazette does my case need and why, whose name goes on the central filing, and is there a cheaper route for me.
The second has one correct answer, yours, because the Department of Publication requires the file to be sent by the applicant and does not permit agents to file on your behalf.
What a consultant can and cannot do, in full.
In this district especially
If the only thing puzzling you is a certificate saying Bardhaman rather than Purba Bardhaman, you need nobody at all. That is not a problem, and anyone charging you to fix it should be turned down.

Name Change in Purba Bardhaman: Frequently Asked Questions
My certificate says Bardhaman, not Purba Bardhaman. Is that wrong?
No. Bardhaman district was divided into Purba Bardhaman and Paschim Bardhaman on 7 April 2017. Anything issued before that date correctly says Bardhaman or Burdwan, because that was the district at the time. A document records the position when it was issued, so this is history rather than an error and it needs no correction, no affidavit and no gazette.
But my area is now in Paschim Bardhaman and my old papers say Bardhaman.
Still not an error, and still nothing to correct. The district you live in today has changed; the document has not become false. If an office queries it, one line explaining the 2017 bifurcation is enough, and any officer in this region will already know.
Could a gazette fix a district name?
No, and nobody should sell you one for this. A gazette notifies a change in a person's name. It has nothing to say about which district you live in or what a district was called in 1998.
How many subdivisions does Purba Bardhaman have?
Four: Bardhaman Sadar North, Bardhaman Sadar South, Kalna and Katwa. Note that both Sadar subdivisions have offices in the same administrative building at the court compound in Bardhaman, with different contact numbers, so make sure you approach the right one.
Which office holds my birth record?
The body that registered it, printed on the certificate. This district is about 85 per cent rural, and the Bardhaman Sadar South subdivision is around 95 per cent rural, so a gram panchayat or block office is the likeliest holder outside the municipal towns.
Which are the municipal towns?
They include Bardhaman and Guskara in Bardhaman Sadar North, Kalna in Kalna subdivision, and Katwa and Dainhat in Katwa subdivision. Everywhere else runs through blocks and gram panchayats.
My old papers name a subdivision that no longer covers my area.
That happens here because of the 2017 reorganisation. The Galsi I block, for example, was in the Durgapur subdivision before bifurcation and sits in Bardhaman Sadar North afterwards. An older subdivision name on a document is correct for its date and needs no correction.
Where do board record corrections go?
Through your school to the board's regional office, and for this part of the state that is the Burdwan regional office of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, at Nazrul Bhavan in Ichlabad, Sripally, Bardhaman. Being close to it does not change the process, which still runs through the school.
Where do I swear the affidavit?
At a court serving your subdivision. For the state gazette it must be before a First Class Judicial Magistrate, with the district court at Bardhaman and courts serving Katwa and Kalna. The central route accepts a notary instead.
Which newspaper should I use?
One Bengali and one English daily for the state route. Choose a Bengali daily that genuinely circulates in your part of the district, and keep the complete page with masthead and date rather than a clipping.
Is a consultant different from an agent?
No. Neither is a regulated title, so the word tells you nothing. Judge by three answers: which gazette your case needs and why, whose name goes on the central filing, and whether a cheaper route exists for you.
Can a consultant file the central gazette for me?
No. The Department of Publication requires the file to be sent in the applicant's own name and does not permit agents to file on your behalf. A consultant prepares the papers; the payment and the posting stay yours.
