Is the Government Press, Alipore Still the Gazette Office for Name Change? (Quick Answer)
No. The West Bengal Government Press at 38 Gopalnagar Road, Alipore, Kolkata 700027 printed the Kolkata Gazette Part II, where citizen name change notices appear, until 2023. A free help desk exists at the Sealdah office, 32 A.P.C. Road, by appointment. Nothing about a name change is submitted at Alipore today.

Alipore Press and the Kolkata Gazette Part II: The Facts in One Place
- The old address
- West Bengal Government Press, 38 Gopalnagar Road, Alipore, Kolkata 700027. This is the address most old pages still give for a name change.
- What changed
- Notification No. 511-PEIR-99/59/2022 dated 17 May 2023 moved Kolkata Gazette Part II publication to Saraswaty Press Limited and put the application online.
- Where Part II is printed now
- Saraswaty Press Limited, 11 B T Road, Belghoria, Kolkata 700056, a Government of West Bengal enterprise under the Public Enterprises and Industrial Reconstruction Department.
- Where you apply now
- wbgazettepart2.in, entirely online. There is no counter for a Part II name change anywhere, at Alipore or elsewhere.
- Free help in the city
- The Kolkata Gazette Part II help desk at the Sealdah office, 32 A.P.C. Road, Kolkata 700009, by prior appointment. Not Alipore.
- Is the Alipore press closed
- The press itself is a Government printing establishment. What ended in 2023 is its role in Part II citizen name change publication, not the building.
- Old notifications
- A Part II notification printed from Alipore before 2023 remains valid. Nothing published then needs to be redone because the press changed.
- If you were sent there
- Nothing is lost. The affidavit and the newspaper pages you already have go straight into the online application, so only the submission route changes.
- Central gazette
- Never had anything to do with Alipore. The Gazette of India is published from the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi-110054, and no counter for it exists in West Bengal.
- Fee and timeline now
- Rs 1,100 for a name or surname on GRIPS under head 0058-00-501-001-14, with the notification issued within 7 days of a complete file.
- How to spot a stale guide
- It names Alipore as the place to apply, gives a mobile number as a Government office contact, asks for a compact disc, or tells you to pay by demand draft. All four are out of date.
- What has not changed
- The affidavit before a First Class Judicial Magistrate, one Bengali daily and one English daily, and the six accepted languages. Only the press and the submission route moved.

Government Press Alipore and Gazette Name Change: What Changed in 2023
The Kolkata Gazette is published in parts. Part II is the section for citizen notices: change of name, surname, religion and gender. For years, Part II was printed at the West Bengal Government Press on the Alipore campus, which sits under the Department of Industry, Commerce and Enterprise. That is why so many guides, agents and relatives say "go to Alipore".
Saraswaty Press Limited, a Government of West Bengal enterprise under the Public Enterprises and Industrial Reconstruction Department, already published Parts I and III. In 2023 the Government decided that Part II would also be published by Saraswaty Press. The PE&IR Department issued Notification 511-PEIR-99/59/2022 on 17 May 2023, printed in the Kolkata Gazette Extraordinary of 18 May 2023, setting out the new online procedure. From that date, Alipore stopped being the place for a Part II application.
West Bengal Government Press, Alipore
38 Gopalnagar Road, Alipore,Kolkata, West Bengal 700027
Heritage Government printing press, south Kolkata, near Alipore Judges Court Road
Role until 2023: printed the Kolkata Gazette Part II.
Role now: a working Government press for other printing. Not a counter for name change files.
Is the Alipore Government Press Still Taking Name Change Files?
Still a Government press
It prints for the State Government under the Department of Industry, Commerce and Enterprise. It is a secured working site, not a public office.
Not the Part II office
Part II is published by Saraswaty Press Limited from Belghoria, with applications online. A file carried to Alipore has nowhere to go.
Not the Gazette of India
The Central Gazette has never been printed in West Bengal. It is the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi-110054, by post.
Not where old notices are fetched
For a Part II notice published earlier, use the Monthly Gazette archive on wbgazettepart2.in or contact Saraswaty Press. The press gate does not hand out copies.
How to Do a Kolkata Gazette Name Change Online Now: 5 Steps
Affidavit before a First Class Judicial Magistrate
Not a notary. The online declaration asks for the affidavit number and the Magistrate's name, so the attestation has to be done before you register.
One recent newspaper notice, scanned
We publish in one Bengali and one English daily so the same pages also serve the Gazette of India if you later need a passport.
Register and apply at wbgazettepart2.in
Mobile and OTP, then Change of Name or Change of Surname, then the typed declaration. ID under 2 MB, photo under 100 KB.
Pay Rs 1,100 on GRIPS
Head of account 0058-00-501-001-14 on wbifms.gov.in, then enter the deposit ID and upload the receipt on the gazette portal. No demand draft, no counter.
Final Submit, then download after the SMS
Application number WB/PART-II/year/number, 24 hours to revise, notification within 7 days of a complete file, PDF on the portal Home page. Status and download, explained.
If You Were Sent to the Alipore Press With a Name Change File
- Do not hand the file to anyone at the gate. There is no counter for it, and a paper file is not the format the portal takes.
- Keep your affidavit and newspaper page. Both are still used; they are uploaded as scans. Check whether the affidavit was attested by a Magistrate; if it is notary-only, it needs to be redone for the state route.
- Do not buy a demand draft. Neither the state nor the central gazette takes one. If you already have one, it cannot be used.
- Need a person? The free help desk is at the Saraswaty Press Sealdah unit, 32 A.P.C. Road, Kolkata 700009, by prior appointment, about a 40-minute ride from Alipore.
The agent who sent you there
An agent quoting Alipore, a demand draft or a CD is working from a pre-2023 script. Ask them for the GRIPS head of account and the portal name; if they cannot answer, the file was never going to be filed correctly.
Are Name Change Notifications Published at Alipore Before 2023 Still Valid?
Yes. A notice published in the Kolkata Gazette Part II when it was printed at Alipore is a published gazette notification. The 2023 change moved where new applications go and who publishes; it did not cancel earlier issues.
If you need a copy of an older notice, start with the Monthly Gazette archive on wbgazettepart2.in, then contact Saraswaty Press Limited. Keep the issue date and your old and new names ready.
One caution
An older state notice is still a state notice. If a passport office or an out-of-state employer asks for the Gazette of India, that is a separate central application, whatever the year of your Part II notice.

Common Questions People Search About the Alipore Gazette Press
Three short answers to the searches that bring people to this page.
What is the Government Press Alipore address for a name change?
There is no longer one to use. The press stands at 38 Gopalnagar Road, Alipore, Kolkata 700027, but since the guideline of 17 May 2023 it no longer takes Part II name change work. The application is online at wbgazettepart2.in and the printing is done by Saraswaty Press at Belghoria. If a page gives you the Alipore address for a name change, it has not been updated in years.
Is the West Bengal Government Press at Alipore closed?
The building and the Government printing establishment are not the subject here. What ended is the Alipore press printing the Kolkata Gazette Part II for citizen notices. People read closure into it because every name change instruction that pointed there stopped working at once, but the change was to the process, not to the press being shut.
My old gazette notification says Alipore. Is it still valid?
Yes. A Part II notification published before 2023 stays valid and does not need to be redone. The press that printed it changing afterwards has no effect on your notification. Keep the PDF and use it as you always would, for Aadhaar, PAN, the bank and everywhere else.

Government Press Alipore and Gazette Name Change: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still do a gazette name change at the Government Press, Alipore?
No. Since the guideline of 17 May 2023, the Kolkata Gazette Part II, where citizen name change notices appear, is published by Saraswaty Press Limited and the application is made online at wbgazettepart2.in. The Alipore press was the earlier arrangement.
Where is the West Bengal Government Press at Alipore?
38 Gopalnagar Road, Alipore, Kolkata 700027, a heritage press under the Department of Industry, Commerce and Enterprise. It printed Part II of the Kolkata Gazette until the 2023 change. It is not the place to submit a name change file today.
Where do I apply now instead of Alipore?
Online at wbgazettepart2.in: register with your mobile and OTP, fill the declaration, pay Rs 1,100 on GRIPS under head 0058-00-501-001-14, upload the Magistrate-attested affidavit, newspaper page, ID and photo, and submit. Notification within 7 days of a complete file.
Is there any counter in Kolkata for the state gazette now?

Who publishes the Kolkata Gazette Part II after Alipore?
Saraswaty Press Limited, a Government of West Bengal enterprise under the PE and IR Department, registered office at 11 B T Road, Belghoria, Kolkata 700056. It already published Parts I and III; Part II was added in 2023.
I applied at Alipore before 2023. Is my gazette still valid?
Yes. A notification published in the Kolkata Gazette Part II before the change is still a published gazette notification. The change affected where new applications go, not the validity of earlier notices.
Why do websites still say Alipore?
They were written before May 2023 and never updated. The same pages usually also mention demand drafts and CDs, both of which are gone. Check the date on any page that names Alipore.
Does the Alipore press have anything to do with the Gazette of India?
No. The Gazette of India is published only by the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi-110054, and West Bengal residents send that file by post. Neither Alipore nor Saraswaty Press handles it.
Can I visit the Alipore press to ask about an old notification?
The press is a working Government facility, not a public counter for gazette queries. For an old Part II notice, check the Monthly Gazette archive on wbgazettepart2.in or contact Saraswaty Press. For anything new, apply online.
What documents changed between the Alipore-era process and the online one?
The affidavit must now be attested by a First Class Judicial Magistrate, uploads are scans (ID under 2 MB, photo under 100 KB), payment is on GRIPS only, and the declaration is typed online with the affidavit number and Magistrate's name. No physical file, no demand draft, no CD.
