Gazette Office in Kolkata: There Is No Central One, and Half the Addresses Online Are Wrong
If you searched this, you probably want an address to visit. The honest answer is that there is no central gazette office in Kolkata, and you almost certainly do not need to visit anything. Several pages give "Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Kolkata 110054", which is Delhi's address with the city swapped and a Delhi PIN left behind. Here is what actually exists, and the three places a Kolkata applicant really goes.

Is There a Gazette Office in Kolkata? (Quick Answer)
Not for the Gazette of India. The Department of Publication is at Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and central files are posted there. For the state gazette, the Kolkata Gazette Part II is published by Saraswaty Press Limited, registered office 11 B T Road, Belghoria, Kolkata 700056, and the application is made online rather than at a counter. A free citizen help desk sits at the Saraswaty Press Sealdah unit, 32 and 32/1 A.P.C. Road, Kolkata 700009, by prior appointment only. Part II printing was earlier at the WBG Press, Alipore, which is why older pages still send people there. In short: nothing to visit, nothing to collect, and the published notification is a free download.

| Office | Where | What it is for | Do you visit? |

| "Civil Lines, Kolkata 110054" | Does not exist | A template error copied across websites | Nowhere to go |
Kolkata Gazette Office vs Central Gazette Office: Two Different Answers
State: the Kolkata Gazette Part II
Published by Saraswaty Press Limited, a Government of West Bengal enterprise, registered office at 11 B T Road, Belghoria, Kolkata 700056. You apply online and pay through GRIPS; the notification is issued within about a week of a complete file and downloaded from the portal. There is no application counter to queue at.
Central: the Gazette of India
The Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. The file goes by post in the applicant's own name, publication follows in 30 to 45 days, and the notification is downloaded free from egazette.gov.in. There is no branch of this office in Kolkata or anywhere else in West Bengal.
Which one your case needs is the decision that matters, and it is not about where you live. How the two routes compare for a Kolkata case.
Wrong Gazette Office Addresses in Kolkata Circulating Online
"Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Kolkata 110054"
Delhi's address with the city name replaced. 110054 is a Delhi PIN and Civil Lines is in Delhi. The same page family publishes "Civil Lines, West Bengal 110054" too.
"The Department of Publication is located only in Kolkata"
Published on a real page selling name change services. It is in Delhi, and this single sentence tells you how much the writer knows.
A "Gazette Office in Kolkata" page describing Charni Road
That is Mumbai. Templated city pages swap the heading and forget the body.
"The Gazette of Kolkata"
No such publication. There is the Gazette of India and the Kolkata Gazette, which is West Bengal's state gazette.
"Submit your file at Government Press, Alipore"
Describes the older arrangement. Part II publication moved to Saraswaty Press and the application went online. What happened to the Alipore address.
Where a Kolkata Applicant Actually Goes: Court, Post Office and Sealdah Help Desk
A court, or a notary
For the affidavit. A First Class Judicial Magistrate at a city court for the state route, or a notary for the central route. This is the only step that genuinely needs you present. Which attestation your route needs.
Nowhere, for the newspaper
Classified notices are booked online or at a booking counter, and published the next day in most cases. Which papers, and what they cost.
A post office, only for a central file
The Gazette of India file is posted to Delhi in your own name. The state route has no posting step at all.
Optionally, the Sealdah help desk
Free assistance with the online Part II application at 32 and 32/1 A.P.C. Road, Kolkata 700009, by prior appointment. Not a walk-in counter, and not where anything is issued.
Do You Collect the Gazette From an Office? No, You Download It
People expect a certificate handed over a counter. There is none. The state notification is downloaded from the portal once published, and the central one from egazette.gov.in, both free, as many copies as you want. Print what you need.
So a charge described as a collection fee, an office visit fee or a copy fee is a charge for something that does not happen. The government fee is paid online against your own reference, on GRIPS for the state route or BharatKosh for the central one.
Ask this one question
"Which office are you visiting, and on what date?" For the state route the honest answer is none. Choosing an agent, and the claims to walk away from.

Gazette Office in Kolkata: Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a gazette office in Kolkata?
Not for the Gazette of India. The Department of Publication is at Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and central files go there by post. For the state gazette, the Kolkata Gazette Part II is published by Saraswaty Press Limited, whose registered office is at 11 B T Road, Belghoria, Kolkata 700056, and applications are made online rather than at a counter.
What is the address of the Kolkata gazette office?
There are two different answers and websites confuse them. State: Saraswaty Press Limited, 11 B T Road, Belghoria, Kolkata 700056, with a help desk at 32 and 32/1 A.P.C. Road, Sealdah, Kolkata 700009. Central: Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Any page giving Civil Lines with a Kolkata or West Bengal label has copied Delhi's address and changed the city name.
Why do so many websites give a Kolkata address with the PIN 110054?
Because it is a template error. 110054 is a Delhi PIN and Civil Lines is in Delhi. Pages that swap the city name into a national template end up publishing an address that does not exist. One page titled for Kolkata even describes the Mumbai office.
Do I need to visit any gazette office in Kolkata?
No. The Kolkata Gazette Part II application is made online at the state portal, and the Gazette of India file is posted to Delhi in your own name. The Sealdah help desk exists for people who want assistance with the online application and works by prior appointment, so it is not a walk-in counter.
What is the Sealdah help desk?
A free citizen help desk for the Kolkata Gazette Part II, at the Saraswaty Press Sealdah unit at 32 and 32/1 A.P.C. Road, Kolkata 700009, near Sealdah station. Visits are by prior appointment. It helps with the online application; it is not where the gazette is issued.
Was the gazette office at Alipore?
Part II printing was earlier done at the WBG Press, Alipore. Under the 17 May 2023 arrangement, publication moved to Saraswaty Press Limited and the application went online, which is why older pages still send people to Alipore.
Where do I actually go in person during a Kolkata name change?
Three places, none of them a gazette office: a court for the Magistrate's affidavit if you are using the state route, or a notary for the central route; nowhere at all for the newspaper, which is booked online or at a booking counter; and a post office, only if you are posting a central file to Delhi.
Can I collect my gazette copy from an office in Kolkata?
There is nothing to collect. The state notification is downloaded from the portal and the central one from egazette.gov.in, both free. Anyone charging you for a copy is selling a free download.
Which gazette office should I approach for a passport name change?
Neither in person. A passport case goes to the Gazette of India, and the file is posted to the Department of Publication in Delhi. The passport office itself wants the published notification, not a visit to a gazette office.
Is the Government Press in Kolkata the same as the gazette office?
The presses print the gazette; they are not application counters. Saraswaty Press Limited publishes the Kolkata Gazette Part II, and the application still happens online.
Does an agent need to visit the gazette office for me?
No, because for the state route there is nothing to visit and for the central route the file is posted in the applicant's own name. Be careful with anyone charging a visit fee for a trip that does not happen.
Where can I read the full detail on the West Bengal gazette offices?
Our West Bengal gazette office guide covers each office, its address, hours, what it does and does not do, and the history of the Alipore move, in more depth than this page.
