Bank Account Name Correction in West Bengal: A Correction, Not a Change of Name
If your account says Ameet where it should say Amit, you have not changed your name. Somebody typed it wrongly, most often when the account was opened. That is a correction, handled on a written request with an affidavit and two identity documents that already carry the right spelling, usually within a few working days. No gazette. No newspaper notice.

How to Correct a Misspelt Name in a Bank Account (Quick Answer)
Write to the Branch Manager at your home branch giving the account number, the spelling as recorded, the correct spelling, and how the error happened. Attach an affidavit declaring that both refer to one and the same person, and two identity documents already carrying the correct spelling, ordinarily Aadhaar and PAN. Take the passbook and the originals for the counter. No gazette is required, because you have not adopted a new name. Expect a few working days. Your account number does not change. Afterwards ask for a fresh cheque book and cards, since the bank corrects its records but does not reprint what you already hold.

| Point | Correction | Change of name |
|---|---|---|
| What happened | The bank recorded your name wrongly | You are now called something else |
| Proof needed | Affidavit and two IDs already correct | Gazette, marriage certificate or decree |
| Newspaper notice | No | Yes, where a gazette is involved |
| Typical time | A few working days | Longer, plus the gazette ahead of it |
| Typical cost | An affidavit, if the branch asks for one | Affidavit, notices and the gazette fee |
| Account number | Unchanged | Unchanged |
Bank Name Spelling Correction or Change of Name: Which Is Your Case?
Ask yourself one question: is the name you want the name you have always had?
Yes. Your documents show it, your family uses it, and only the bank has it wrong. This is a correction. The evidence already exists, so nothing has to be published anywhere.
No. You are asking the bank to record a name you did not previously use. That is a change of name, and the bank will want a gazette, a marriage certificate or a decree. How the full change of name works.
Why this matters commercially
Because the two cost very different amounts. Somebody quoting you a gazette package for a mistyped letter is selling the expensive answer to the cheap problem. Ask which of the two your case is before agreeing to anything.
Correct Aadhaar and PAN Before the Bank Account
The bank is not going to take your word for the correct spelling. It compares the request with your KYC documents, and the ones it reads are Aadhaar and PAN. So the case is straightforward only when those already show the spelling you are asking for.
If Aadhaar itself is wrong, correct that first. If PAN is wrong, correct that. If the two disagree with each other, resolve that before approaching the branch, because a bank asked to choose between two official documents will simply decline.
Aadhaar corrections · PAN corrections · When PAN and Aadhaar disagree.
The five-minute check
Put Aadhaar, PAN and your passbook side by side and read the name on each, letter by letter, including initials and spacing. Whichever one differs is where the work starts.
Bank Name Correction Application Letter: What to Write
Write to the Branch Manager
Keep it short and factual: your account number, the name as currently recorded, the correct name, and how the error arose. A clear account moves faster than a vague request.
Ask for the bank's KYC modification form
Most banks have one. Fill it with the correct spelling exactly as your Aadhaar prints it, including initials and spacing.
Attach the affidavit and two identity documents
The affidavit declares that both spellings refer to one and the same person. The two documents must already carry the correct spelling.
Submit at the home branch with originals
The branch where the account is held. Take the passbook, show the originals, and get an acknowledgement with a reference number.
Follow up on the reference number
A few working days is normal. If it stalls, ask whether it has been referred beyond the branch, which happens with older accounts.
One and the Same Person Affidavit for Bank Name Correction
The affidavit is short. It states your correct full name, the incorrect spelling as it appears in the bank's records, the account number, and a declaration that both refer to one and the same person. Sworn on non-judicial stamp paper before a notary; it is inexpensive.
Not every case needs one. Where the error is plainly the bank's own, an obvious slip against an account opening form that shows the right name, some branches manage on the written request and your identity documents alone. Ask before you spend on it.
It is not a gazette affidavit
The affidavit used for a gazette application declares that you have changed your name. This one declares that you have not, and that a record is simply wrong. Do not let the two be conflated on your behalf.
Initials, Middle Names and Small Spelling Differences in Bank Records
People leave these because they seem too small to matter: an initial where a full name should be, a missing middle name, a surname spelt two ways across two accounts. Systems do not agree that they are small.
Payment systems, income tax records and KYC checks compare names closely, and a difference that a human would ignore can hold up a transfer, a refund or a claim. Every one of these is easier to correct now, on an affidavit and two documents, than during whatever event eventually forces the issue.
The nominee field too
While you are there, check the nominee's name is spelt correctly. It is the one field nobody reads until it matters most, and correcting it is the same short application.
After Bank Name Correction: Passbook, Cheque Book, Cards and App
- The passbook, reissued or endorsed
- The cheque book, since a cheque in the wrong spelling invites a return
- The debit and credit cards
- The net banking and app profile, which sometimes lags
- Deposits, loans, demat and insurance linked to the account, each on its own footing
And every other bank
If one bank had the spelling wrong, check the others. The same account opening form was often copied across, and the same affidavit will serve at each branch. The full bank-by-bank list.
When a Bank Name Change Needs a Gazette Instead
Sometimes what people call a correction is really a change of name, and presenting it as a correction wastes everyone's time because the branch checks the documents anyway. It is a change of name where:
- You want a surname added or removed that your documents have never carried
- You want to move to a married surname, which needs the marriage certificate
- You want a different first name, whatever the reason
- Your own identity documents also carry the name you are calling wrong
Then this is your route
The bank records name change · Which gazette a case needs · The marriage case, where a certificate is often enough on its own.
Bank Name Correction: Frequently Asked Questions
My name is misspelt in my bank account. Do I need a gazette?
No. You have not changed your name; the bank recorded it wrongly. That is a correction, and it is normally handled on a written request with an affidavit declaring the correct spelling and two identity documents that already show it. A gazette is for adopting a different name, which is not what happened here.
How is a correction different from a name change?
A change of name means you are now called something else, and the bank wants government-recognised proof such as a gazette, a marriage certificate or a decree. A correction means the bank's record does not match the name you have always had, and the proof is simply your existing documents. Different evidence, different timeline, different cost.
What exactly do I take to the branch?
A written request to the Branch Manager giving the account number, the wrong spelling as recorded and the correct spelling. An affidavit declaring that both refer to one and the same person. Two identity documents already carrying the correct spelling, usually Aadhaar and PAN. The passbook, and originals for the counter to see.
How long does it take?
Commonly a few working days, and often faster than a full change of name. Where the branch has to refer it upward, or where your identity documents disagree with each other, it takes longer.
Do all my identity documents need to be correct first?
They need to agree with the correction you are asking for. If Aadhaar and PAN both show the right spelling and only the bank is wrong, the case is simple. If Aadhaar itself carries the misspelling, fix that first, because the bank reads it.
Whose mistake was it?
Often the bank's, from an account opening form transcribed by hand, and sometimes the customer's own from a form filled in a hurry. Either way it is treated as a correction rather than a change of name. Say plainly what happened; branches respond better to a clear account than to a vague request.
Is an affidavit always required?
Most branches ask for one for anything beyond an obvious typing slip, and it is inexpensive. Where the error is plainly the bank's own and the identity documents are unambiguous, some branches manage on the written request alone. Ask before you spend on an affidavit.
What if the difference is only an initial or a middle name?
That is still a correction, and it matters more than people think, because payment systems, income tax records and KYC checks compare names closely. An expanded initial or a missing middle name is worth fixing while it is easy.
Will my account number change?
No. The account number belongs to the account. Only the recorded name is corrected, and everything linked to the account continues unchanged.
Do I need to do this at every bank?
At every bank where the spelling is wrong, yes. Each holds its own records. The same affidavit and identity documents will serve at all of them, so make several attested copies at the outset.
Does the corrected name appear on my cards automatically?
No. Ask for a fresh cheque book and replacement cards, and check the net banking profile. The bank corrects its records; it does not reissue what you already hold unless you request it.
Do you charge for this?
We would rather you did not pay anyone for it. A bank spelling correction is a short application you can make yourself, and this page sets out everything it needs. If it turns out you are actually changing your name, that is a different matter and we can help with the gazette.
