Post Office Savings, NSC and KVP Name Change in West Bengal
Many families in West Bengal keep money in the post office: a savings account, National Savings Certificates (NSC), Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP), a monthly income scheme or a recurring deposit. When the holder's name changes after marriage, or was spelt wrongly at the counter years ago, the post office record must be updated before maturity or a claim. There is no separate name change form; it is done through the New/Change KYC form with proof. This page explains how, and what heirs do when the holder has died.

Post Office Savings, NSC and KVP Name Change (Quick Answer)
To change the name on a post office savings account, NSC or KVP, visit the post office where the account stands with the New/Change KYC form, your passbook or certificates, ID in the new name (Aadhaar and PAN) and proof of the change, such as a marriage certificate or gazette. The account or certificate number stays the same. Update the nomination on Form 10 if needed. If the holder has died, the nominee or heir claims on Form 11. The update itself is free.

| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Surname changed after marriage | Change KYC with marriage proof and new ID |
| Spelling wrong at the counter | Change KYC with ID and an affidavit |
| Nominee's name wrong | Form 10, change of nomination |
| Holder died, nominee registered | Form 11 by the nominee |
| Holder died, no nominee | Form 11 by legal heirs with heir proof |
Post Office Small Savings Schemes in West Bengal: SB, RD, TD, MIS, NSC and KVP
The post office runs the government's small savings schemes: the savings account, recurring deposit, time deposit, monthly income scheme, NSC, KVP, PPF, Sukanya Samriddhi and the senior citizens scheme. All are recorded on the post office's core banking system against a customer ID.
So a name is not changed scheme by scheme. You update the customer's KYC once, and every account linked to that customer ID shows the new name.
Aadhaar and PAN are now part of post office KYC for small savings. If they are in different names, fix that first; see PAN and Aadhaar name mismatch.
Go to the post office where your account stands, or the head post office that holds it. In Kolkata that may be your local sub post office or the GPO; in districts, the head post office of your division.
How to Change Your Name in Post Office Savings: New/Change KYC Form (SB-KYC)
India Post's KYC form is titled New/Change KYC, and it says that for a change, only the relevant parts need to be filled. A Department of Posts order lists it as SB-KYC among the standard small savings forms.
Fill your customer ID and account numbers, write the new name, and attach self-attested copies of ID and address proof in the new name, plus proof of the change. Carry the originals for checking.
Ask the counter to update the name on the passbook too, and keep the receipt or acknowledgement.
Proof of Name Change for the Post Office: Marriage Certificate, Gazette or Affidavit
For a married woman, the marriage certificate with Aadhaar and PAN in the new name is the usual proof; see Aadhaar name change after marriage.
For a full change of name, the gazette is the strongest proof; see gazette name change in West Bengal. For a small spelling error made at the counter, ID proof and an affidavit often do; see one and the same person affidavit.
If the post office asks for something you do not have, ask for the request in writing, so you know exactly what to bring.
Name Change on NSC and Kisan Vikas Patra Certificates
NSC and KVP are certificates bought at the post office. Newer ones are held in electronic form or a passbook linked to your customer ID; older paper certificates carry the name printed at purchase.
The same KYC update links your new name to the certificates. At maturity, the post office pays the holder whose identity matches the record, so update the name well before the maturity date.
Keep the old certificates or passbook safe. You need them at maturity, and a lost certificate needs a separate duplicate process.
Post Office Nominee Name Wrong or Changed: Form 10
The nominee is the person who claims if the holder dies. If the nominee's name is wrong, or the nominee has married and changed her name, update it on Form 10, which covers cancellation and change of nomination.
A correct nominee name saves the family from a long legal heir process later. Check the nominee on every account, not just one.
If your bank account has the same nominee issue, fix it there too; see name correction in a bank account.
Post Office Savings After the Holder's Death: Form 11
When the holder dies, the nominee or legal heirs claim on Form 11, which covers settlement of the account of a deceased depositor. They need the death certificate, the passbook or certificates and their own ID.
If the holder's name on the death certificate differs from the post office record, correct the death certificate first, or explain the difference with an affidavit.
Without a nominee, the post office asks for heir proof. Large or disputed claims may need a succession certificate from a court, which is a lawyer's job; the District Legal Services Authority gives free legal aid to eligible people.
India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) Name Change Is a Separate Record
An India Post Payments Bank account is a separate bank, even though it is run through the post office. A name change there follows IPPB's own KYC process.
So if you hold both a post office savings account and an IPPB account, update both.
The same applies to postal life insurance policies, which are a separate record from savings.
