PPF Account Name Correction in West Bengal

A Public Provident Fund (PPF) account runs for 15 years or more, so a name on it often goes out of date: a woman marries, a minor's account was opened with a nickname, or the clerk spelt the name wrongly. A PPF account can only be in one person's name and cannot be continued by anyone else after death. So a wrong name matters most at maturity, withdrawal and claim. This page explains how to correct it at your bank or post office in West Bengal, and the October 2024 rules that make a second account a problem.

PPF Account Name Correction (Quick Answer)

To correct the name on a PPF account, go to the bank branch or post office that holds it with a KYC update request, ID in the correct name (Aadhaar and PAN), the passbook and proof of the change, such as a marriage certificate, gazette or affidavit. The account number stays the same. Do not open a second PPF account in the new name: under rules from 1 October 2024, a second account earns no interest unless it was merged earlier. After the holder dies, the account is closed and the nominee or heirs claim the money.

The Basics

PPF Account Basics: One Person, No Joint Accounts, Why the Name Matters

A PPF account is opened at a post office or an authorised bank, in the name of one person only. There are no joint PPF accounts. A parent or guardian can open one for a minor.

It runs for 15 years and can be extended. Over that long life, the holder's name on Aadhaar, PAN and the bank often changes, while the PPF record stays as it was.

The name matters at three moments: a partial withdrawal or loan, maturity, and a claim after death. At each, the office checks that the person in front of it is the account holder.

If your name on the PPF passbook still matches your ID, you need do nothing. Correct it only if it differs.

Correction

How to Correct the Name on a PPF Account at the Bank or Post Office

Go to the bank branch or post office where the PPF account stands. Ask for a KYC update or name change request. At a post office this is the New/Change KYC form; see post office savings name change.

Attach Aadhaar and PAN in the correct name, the PPF passbook, and proof of the change: a marriage certificate, a gazette, or an affidavit for a small spelling error; see one and the same person affidavit.

The PPF account number does not change. Ask the office to print the new name in the passbook and keep the acknowledgement.

Second Account

Never Open a Second PPF Account in a New Name: No Interest Under the 2024 Rules

A person can hold only one PPF account. Under rules for irregular accounts from 1 October 2024, a second account earns no interest unless it was merged with the first before December 2019, and money above the yearly limit is returned without interest.

So if your old account is in a maiden name or a misspelt name, correct it. Opening a new one in the new name only creates an irregular account.

If you already have two accounts, one in each spelling, ask the office how they will treat them under these rules before you deposit more.

Minor Account

Minor PPF Account Opened With a Nickname: Correct It With the Birth Certificate

Parents often open a PPF account for a child using the name they use at home. Later, school and Aadhaar records carry a different name.

Correct it with the child's birth certificate and Aadhaar, signed by the guardian. Under the October 2024 rules, a minor's account earns post office savings interest until the child turns 18, and only one account per minor is allowed.

When the child turns 18, the account changes to the child's own operation, so the name should match their ID by then; see name change in Aadhaar.

Nominee

Correcting the Nominee Name on a PPF Account

The nominee is who gets the money after the holder's death. If the nominee's name is wrong, or a daughter nominee has married and changed her name, update the nomination.

A guide notes there is no fee for registering, cancelling or changing a PPF nomination. At a post office, nomination changes use Form 10.

A correct nominee saves the family from a legal heir process later.

After a Death

PPF Account After the Holder's Death: Closure and Nominee Claim

A PPF account cannot be continued by the nominee or heirs. It is closed, and the money is paid to the nominee or, if there is none, to the legal heirs. The nominee can open a new PPF account of their own with the money.

The claim is made at the office that holds the account, with the death certificate and passbook. Post offices use Form 11 for claims; older guides mention Form G for PPF. Ask your office which form it uses.

If the holder's name on the death certificate differs from the PPF record, correct the death certificate or explain the difference by affidavit. Without a nominee, a larger claim may need a succession certificate, which is a lawyer's job.

Transfer

Transferring a PPF Account Between Bank and Post Office: Correct the Name First

A PPF account can be transferred between a post office and a bank, or between branches. The name goes with the record, so correct it before or along with the transfer, not after.

If you moved from a district to Kolkata, or out of West Bengal, the transfer keeps the same account; you do not need a new one.

Keep the old passbook until the new office confirms the balance and name.
