Sukanya Samriddhi Account Name Correction in West Bengal
A Sukanya Samriddhi account is opened for a girl before she turns 10 and runs for 21 years. In that time, her name can change: the account was opened with a home name, the school later used another spelling, or she marries and takes a new surname before closing it. The guardian's name matters too, and from 1 October 2024, an account opened by a grandparent must be moved to a parent or legal guardian. This page explains how to correct the girl's or guardian's name at the post office or bank.

Sukanya Samriddhi Account Name Correction (Quick Answer)
To correct the girl's name on a Sukanya Samriddhi account, the guardian visits the post office or bank that holds it with the passbook, the girl's birth certificate and Aadhaar in the correct name, and a KYC update request. To correct the guardian's name, bring the guardian's Aadhaar, PAN and proof of the change. If a grandparent opened the account, it must be moved to a parent or legal guardian under the rules from 1 October 2024. When a married daughter closes the account, she shows the marriage certificate to link her names. Corrections are free.

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana in West Bengal: Account Basics for a Girl Up to 10
The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana was launched on 22 January 2015 under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. A parent or legal guardian opens the account for a girl up to 10 years old, at a post office or an authorised bank.
The account matures after 21 years. Guides say part of the balance can be withdrawn for her education at 18, and the account can be closed early on her marriage after 18.
Each girl can have only one account, and a family is usually limited to two, with an exception for twins or triplets. Under rules from 1 October 2024, extra accounts are closed without interest.
The girl's birth certificate is the base document when the account is opened, so her name on the account should follow it.
Correcting the Girl's Name on a Sukanya Samriddhi Account: Birth Certificate First
Parents often open the account with the name used at home. Later, the school, Aadhaar and Madhyamik records carry a different spelling. When she withdraws money at 18 or closes the account, the office checks her ID against the account.
Bring the passbook, her birth certificate and her Aadhaar in the correct name, and ask for a KYC update. At a post office this is the New/Change KYC form; see post office savings name change.
If the birth certificate itself is wrong, correct it first through the Registrar; see child birth certificate name change. Then update Aadhaar, then the account.
Correcting the Parent or Guardian's Name on a Sukanya Account
The guardian runs the account until the girl takes over. If the mother opened it and later changed her surname, or the father's name was spelt wrongly, update the guardian's KYC with Aadhaar, PAN and proof of the change.
For a mother whose surname changed after marriage or divorce, the marriage certificate or divorce decree with her new ID is the usual proof; see Aadhaar name change after marriage.
For a small spelling error, ID proof and an affidavit often do; see one and the same person affidavit.
Sukanya Accounts Opened by Grandparents: Transfer to a Parent Under the 2024 Rules
Many grandparents opened Sukanya accounts for granddaughters. Under the rules from 1 October 2024, only a parent or legal guardian can hold the account, so these must be transferred to a parent.
The parent visits with the passbook, the girl's birth certificate, proof of the relationship and their own KYC. Names must match across these papers, so check the parent's name on the birth certificate first.
If the parents have died and a grandparent is the guardian, proof of legal guardianship may be asked for. That can be a lawyer's job; the District Legal Services Authority gives free legal aid to eligible people.
Daughter's Married Name When Closing a Sukanya Account on Marriage
The account can be closed early on the girl's marriage after she turns 18. By then she may have taken her husband's surname.
She shows her ID in the new name and the marriage certificate, which links her maiden name on the account to her married name; see marriage certificate correction if that certificate itself has errors.
She does not need to change the account name before closing. The link is enough, as long as the papers are clear.
When the Girl Turns 18: Her Own KYC on the Sukanya Account
Under the 2019 scheme rules, the guardian operates the account until the girl turns 18; some older guides still say 10. After that, she operates it herself and gives her own KYC.
This is the moment her own Aadhaar, PAN and bank must match the account name. Check this a few months before her 18th birthday.
If her school certificate differs from the account, sort out which name she will use for life before she applies for college; see school certificate name correction.
If the Girl Dies: Sukanya Account Closure and Name on the Death Certificate
If the girl dies, the account is closed and the balance paid to the guardian, with the death certificate.
If her name on the death certificate differs from the account, correct the death certificate or explain the difference by affidavit.
If the guardian dies, the new guardian takes over the account with proof of guardianship.
