Kanyashree Name Mismatch in West Bengal: Birth Certificate, School Register and Bank

Kanyashree Prakalpa pays girls an annual K1 scholarship and a one-time K2 grant. The application goes through the girl's school or college, is verified at the Block and sanctioned by the district, and the money goes to the bank account given. If the girl's name is spelt one way on her birth certificate, another in the school register, and a third on the passbook or Aadhaar, the application can stall. This page shows which record to fix first.

Kanyashree Name Mismatch (Quick Answer)

For Kanyashree K1 or K2, the girl's name should read the same on her birth certificate, school register, Aadhaar and bank passbook. Tell the school's Kanyashree teacher before the form is forwarded. Correct the bank at the branch, Aadhaar at a Seva Kendra, and the birth certificate at the local body that registered it. A school register error is fixed through the school. Most fixes are free or low cost, and no gazette is needed.

Kanyashree K1 and K2: Rs 1,000 a Year and the Rs 25,000 Grant

Kanyashree Prakalpa, started by the West Bengal government on 8 March 2013, encourages girls to stay in education and not marry before adulthood. K1 is an annual scholarship of Rs 1,000 for girls aged 13 to 18 studying in Classes VIII to XII. K2 is a one-time grant of Rs 25,000 for a girl aged 18 to 19 who is unmarried and still in education or training.

Sources differ on the family income limit. Some guides still give Rs 1,20,000 a year; Wikipedia says the income condition was later removed. Check the current rule with your school or the official portal.

Because the money goes straight into an account and is checked against school records, a name that does not match can delay it.

For other scholarships, see OASIS and SVMCM scholarship name mismatch.

The Process

How a Kanyashree Application Moves: School, Block Verification, Then Payment

The girl applies through her school or college, which checks and forwards the form. The state's Duare Sarkar procedure for Kanyashree says the Block is the verifying authority and the district is the sanctioning and disbursing authority.

So a name problem can be caught at three points: the school, the Block, or the bank when the money is sent. The earlier it is fixed, the less it costs in time.

The portal gives each application a unique ID; keep it to check status.

Documents

Kanyashree Documents: Birth Certificate, Guardian's Voter ID and Bank Names

The Duare Sarkar procedure lists a copy of the parent's or guardian's voter ID, the girl's birth certificate, a marital status declaration, a copy of the bank passbook page with account details, a disability certificate if any, and photographs.

Put them side by side. The girl's name must agree on the birth certificate, the passbook and the school's records. The parent's name on the voter ID should match the parent's name on the birth certificate.

Small differences, such as a missing middle name or a Bengali spelling written two ways in English, are worth fixing now.

Birth Certificate

Kanyashree and the Birth Certificate Name: Adding a Missing Name

A birth certificate is sometimes issued before the child is named, with the name left blank. A name can be added later at the municipality or Gram Panchayat that registered the birth; see name change in a child's birth certificate.

If the certificate has the name spelt wrongly, that is a Registrar correction, not a gazette matter. The West Bengal birth portal is janma-mrityutathya.wb.gov.in.

Fix the birth certificate before you fix Aadhaar, because Aadhaar for a minor follows the birth certificate.

School Register

School Admission Register Name for Kanyashree: Ask the Headmaster

The school enters the girl's details from its admission register. If the register spells her name differently from the birth certificate, ask the Headmaster to correct it.

For girls who have registered with the board, the correction may go through the school to WBBSE or WBCHSE; see name correction in marksheet and school certificate.

The Madhyamik record will follow the register, so a fix now also saves trouble later.

Bank and Aadhaar

Kanyashree Bank Account and Aadhaar Name Must Match the School Record

The bank account must carry the girl's name the same way as the school record. If the passbook was opened with a short name or a different spelling, ask the branch to correct it with the birth certificate and school certificate; see name correction in a bank account.

If Aadhaar is wrong, correct it at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with the birth certificate; see Aadhaar name change for a child. Aadhaar allows only two name changes in a lifetime, so get it right.

Do not open a second account in a new spelling. Correct the first one.

The Portal

Fixing a Wrong Name on the Kanyashree Portal Before and After Forwarding

If the form has not been forwarded, the school can correct it. Tell the school's Kanyashree teacher as soon as you see the mistake.

If it has been forwarded, ask the school to raise it with the Block, which verifies applications. Carry the corrected document with you.

A gazette is not needed for any of this. For a minor, the West Bengal state gazette is not even available.
