Aadhaar Name in Bengali and English Not Matching: Which Line Counts and How to Fix It

Your Aadhaar prints your name twice: once in English and once in Bengali. The Bengali line is usually made by transliteration from the English one, so mistakes are common. Before you fix anything, know this: most checks read only the English name, and Aadhaar allows a name change only twice in a lifetime. Fixing the wrong line can cost you one of them.

Aadhaar Bengali and English Name Mismatch (Quick Answer)

If only the Bengali name on your Aadhaar is wrong and the English name is right, you can often leave it alone, because banks, PAN linking and most forms read the English name. If an office does need the Bengali line fixed, it cannot be done online. Visit an Aadhaar enrolment centre that can enter data in Bengali, carry one photo ID with the correct name, and check the Bengali spelling on the operator's screen before you sign. The fee is commonly Rs 75. If the English name is the one that is wrong, that is a name update, and Aadhaar allows it only twice in your lifetime, so think before you spend one.

The Basics

Why Your Aadhaar Shows Your Name in Bengali and English

Aadhaar prints your details in English and in a local language. For most people enrolled in West Bengal, that local language is Bengali.

At the centre, the operator usually types your name in English, and the software produces the Bengali version by transliteration. UIDAI itself tells operators to warn people that there can be transliteration errors when the operator is not fluent in the language.

That is why a name like Shubhashis can come out in Bengali as something close but not quite right, or why a vowel or a conjunct letter can be wrong. Some cards even show the local line in another script, because the centre was set to a different language.

None of this means your identity is wrong. It means one of two printed lines was produced badly.

The Key Question

Which Aadhaar Name Counts: English or Bengali?

In practice, the line that gets matched is usually the English name. PAN and Aadhaar linking, bank KYC, passport applications and most online forms in India work in English. A wrong Bengali line rarely stops any of these.

The Bengali line matters when an office works in Bengali, for example when a clerk compares your Aadhaar with a Bengali land record or a Bengali school register, or when a printed Bengali form is checked by hand. Even then, many offices accept the English line once you point to it.

So the first step is not a correction. It is a question to the office in front of you: which line are you reading? If the answer is English and your English name is right, you may have nothing to fix.

Bengali Line Only

Aadhaar Bengali Name Wrong but English Name Correct

This is the most common case. Your English name matches your Madhyamik certificate and your PAN. Only the Bengali spelling is off.

Option 1: leave it. If no office has objected, there is no need to do anything. Many people live with a slightly wrong Bengali line for years without a single problem.

Option 2: fix it at a centre. If an office that works in Bengali has objected, or you simply want it right, visit an enrolment centre that can enter Bengali and ask for the local language name to be corrected.

We could not find a UIDAI statement that says whether a correction to the Bengali line alone is counted against your two lifetime name updates. Ask the operator, or call the UIDAI helpline 1947, before you submit. If there is any doubt, and your English name is right, leaving the Bengali line alone is the safe choice.

Step by Step

How to Correct the Bengali Name on Aadhaar in West Bengal

1

Check which line is wrong

Compare both lines with your main documents. Write down the exact correct Bengali spelling.

2

Ask whether anyone needs it fixed

Many checks read only English. Fix only what someone actually needs.

3

Find a centre that can enter Bengali

UIDAI says the local language cannot be updated through the online portal. It is done at an enrolment centre that has this facility. Book an appointment at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or ask your nearest centre.

4

Carry your proof

Your Aadhaar and one photo ID that shows your name correctly.

5

Read the Bengali on the screen

Before you sign, read the Bengali name on the operator's screen and on the slip. This is where most errors happen, and it is the only moment you can stop them.

6

Pay and keep the slip

The demographic update fee is commonly Rs 75. Keep the Update Request Number.

7

Download the updated Aadhaar

Check the status online and download the new copy when it is ready.

English Line

When the English Name on Aadhaar Is the Problem

Sometimes the Bengali line is right and the English spelling is the odd one out. Your Madhyamik certificate says Subhas, your Aadhaar says Shubhash. Both are honest ways of writing one Bengali name in English.

This is not really an Aadhaar problem. It is a spelling difference across documents, and our name spelling correction guide shows how to pick the anchor document. Often a one and the same person affidavit settles it without touching Aadhaar at all.

If you decide to change the English name on Aadhaar, you need one photo ID that already shows the spelling you want, and it counts as a name update. If the new English name is a genuinely different name, get your gazette notification first, then update Aadhaar.

Think First

Aadhaar Name Update Limit: Twice in a Lifetime

Aadhaar allows a name to be changed twice in a lifetime. Not twice a year. Twice in total. Date of birth can be changed only once.

A Bengali and English mismatch is exactly the kind of small problem that tempts people to spend one of those changes. Then a marriage, a real correction or a gazette name change comes later, and only one chance is left.

If you have already used both, a further change goes through UIDAI's exception process, which takes longer. Our Aadhaar name change guide covers the limit in detail.

Our honest advice: spend an Aadhaar name update only when a real change or a real error in the English name needs it.

West Bengal Records

Bengali Name Mismatch With Land Records, Schemes and School Registers

West Bengal keeps many records in Bengali. This is where the Bengali line on Aadhaar sometimes gets compared.

  • Land records: a khatian on Banglarbhumi may spell your name in Bengali differently from your Aadhaar. The land record is corrected at the BL&LRO office, not through Aadhaar. See our Banglarbhumi mutation guide.
  • State schemes: payments are usually matched through Aadhaar seeding with your bank account. If a payment is held, check the bank's Aadhaar seeding first. Our Lakshmir Bhandar guide shows how.
  • School records: a school register in Bengali is corrected by the school and the board, not by Aadhaar.

In each case, fix the record that is actually wrong. Changing Aadhaar to match a wrong land record or register only moves the problem.

Avoid These

Common Mistakes With an Aadhaar Bengali Name Mismatch

❌

Fixing a line nobody reads

If every office you deal with reads the English name, a wrong Bengali line may not need fixing at all.

❌

Trying to fix the Bengali line online

UIDAI says the local language cannot be updated online. Go to a centre.

❌

Signing without reading the Bengali

Most errors are made at the counter. Read the Bengali on the screen and the slip before you sign.

❌

Spending a lifetime name update on a spelling form

Subhas and Shubhash are the same name. An affidavit is usually enough.

❌

Changing Aadhaar to match a wrong record

If the land record or school register is wrong, correct it at its own office.

FAQ & People Also Ask

Aadhaar Bengali and English Name Mismatch: Frequently Asked Questions

Does correcting only the Bengali name count as one of my two name changes?

We could not find a UIDAI statement that answers this clearly. Ask the operator or call 1947 before you submit. If your English name is right, leaving the Bengali line alone is the safe choice.

My Aadhaar shows my name in Hindi or another script instead of Bengali. What do I do?

The local language was set to another language at enrolment. A centre with Bengali can update the local language for you.

Not straight away. If both are honest spellings of one name, a one and the same person affidavit is usually enough. Changing Aadhaar uses one of your two lifetime name updates.

Fix the record that is actually wrong. A wrong khatian is corrected at the BL&LRO office, not through Aadhaar.

How long does an Aadhaar update take?

Track it with the Update Request Number on the slip, and download the new Aadhaar once the status shows it is done.

Can you correct my Aadhaar for me?

No one but you can do an Aadhaar update, because it needs your biometrics at the centre. We can help you decide which line needs fixing and what to carry, and often the answer is that nothing needs doing.
