Your NPS account and PRAN stay the same when your name changes; only the subscriber details are updated. The change is made through Form S2, and the form itself names the proof: a marriage certificate or a gazette copy of the name change. Government staff go through their DDO or PAO; everyone else through a Point of Presence. This is one of the few records where a gazette really is the expected proof.

Who Has an NPS Account in West Bengal: Government, Corporate and All Citizen
The National Pension System is regulated by PFRDA and run through Central Recordkeeping Agencies such as Protean, KFintech and CAMS. In West Bengal it mostly reaches Central Government employees posted here, All India Services officers of the West Bengal cadre, employees whose companies offer the corporate model, and anyone who opened an All Citizen account at a bank.
West Bengal's own Finance Department memo No. 1069-F(Y) dated 3 February 2012 made NPS mandatory for All India Services officers on the West Bengal cadre who joined on or after 1 January 2004.

NPS Form S2: Marriage Certificate or Gazette Copy as Proof
Form S2 is the Subscriber Master Details Change Request. Its own instruction is plain: in case of change in name, provide proof such as a marriage certificate or gazette copy of the name change.
The form is filled in block letters in black ink; corrections are made by cancelling and rewriting, and countersigned. You bring originals and two self-attested photocopies; originals are returned at the counter.
Your PRAN does not change. Your contributions, scheme choice and nominees stay as they are; only the name on the record is updated. Check your nomination afterwards anyway.
NPS Name Change for Central Government Employees Through the DDO or PAO
For government sector subscribers, Protean's SOP (version 1.1, 30 August 2024) says the DDO or PAO office logs in to the CRA system and raises the request, and the PrAO or DTA office authorises it.
The documents it lists are: a self-attested gazette copy, or proof of identity in the old name and in the new name; an extract of the service record with the new name; Form S2; and optionally proof of a bank account in the new name. Scans are 2 KB to 2 MB in jpeg, png or pdf.
So update your service book first. A central government employee changing a name needs a deed, a newspaper notice and a Gazette of India notification under the DoPT rules; see gazette notification for central government employees. A woman taking her husband's surname only needs to intimate it.
NPS Name Change for All Citizen and Corporate Subscribers at the POP
If you opened NPS yourself at a bank or online, take Form S2 to your Point of Presence, usually the bank branch that services your account, or the POP-SP. Bring the originals and copies.
You can start some requests by logging in to your CRA account, but a name change is not instant. It is checked by hand, which can take some working days.
Corporate subscribers go through their employer's NPS desk, which works with its POP.
Update PAN, Aadhaar and Bank Before NPS
NPS uses your PAN and bank account. Keep your PAN in the same name as your NPS record. Correct PAN first; see name change in PAN card.
Your bank account should also be in the new name, because withdrawals and annuity money go there. The SOPs list proof of a bank account in the new name among the documents.
Aadhaar matters for KYC and for logins with OTP. Remember Aadhaar allows only two name changes in a lifetime.
NPS Name Change Limits: Name and Date of Birth Not Together
Protean's SOP for NPS Lite (version 1.3, 3 April 2025) says the subscriber's name and date of birth cannot both be modified at the same time. If both are wrong, do one, wait for it to finish, then do the other.
Both SOPs say a second name change needs one more level of approval: by the NPS Trust user in the government sector, or at the CRA end for NPS Lite. Expect it to take longer, and keep every proof.

Kolkata Gazette Part II for an NPS Name Change
Adults living in West Bengal can use the state gazette, the Kolkata Gazette Part II. It is quick and fully online.
Swear an affidavit before a First Class Judicial Magistrate; a notary will not do. Publish a notice in one Bengali and one English newspaper and keep the full pages. Apply at wbgazettepart2.in with your ID (up to 2 MB) and photo (up to 100 KB), pay Rs 1,100 on GRIPS, and the notification usually comes in about 7 days with an SMS. A gazette is supporting proof. It does not change your NPS record by itself; Form S2 does.
Gazette of India for an NPS Name Change From West Bengal
Central government employees changing a name are told by DoPT rules to publish in the Gazette of India. It also suits anyone living outside West Bengal, or anyone asked for it in writing.
The seven steps: make a name change affidavit before a notary; publish a newspaper notice and keep the original page; fill the typed proforma with two witnesses; you and both witnesses sign in the old name; pay on BharatKosh Rs 1,100 for an adult, Rs 1,700 for a minor or Rs 3,500 from abroad (revised each financial year, non-refundable); post the file in your own name to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, since agents cannot submit it; and after 30 to 45 days download it free from egazette.gov.in.
There is no central gazette office in West Bengal, so the file always goes to Delhi by post.
