PLI and RPLI Postal Life Insurance Name Change in West Bengal
Postal Life Insurance (PLI) covers government and many professional employees, and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) covers people in villages. These policies can run for many years, so the policyholder's name changes along the way: a woman marries, a spelling was wrong in the bond, or someone changes their name legally. India Post has a written SOP for name change requests (May 2022) that lists exactly which proof it accepts for each case. This page explains it in simple words for policyholders in West Bengal.

PLI and RPLI Name Change (Quick Answer)
To change the name on a PLI or RPLI policy, submit the name change application at any branch, sub or head post office, or a PLI CPC, with the original policy bond, self-attested ID and address proof, and proof matching your case. India Post's 2022 SOP lists a marriage certificate or similar for a surname change after marriage; for a legal name change, a document in the new name, two newspaper clippings or a state gazette, and a notarised affidavit; and for a spelling correction, at least one government or school document. The SOP mentions no fee.

| Case | Proof listed |
|---|---|
| Surname change after marriage | Marriage certificate, passport with spouse name, gazette or court document |
| Divorce or death of spouse | Divorce decree or spouse's death certificate |
| Adoption | Adoption deed or court document |
| Legal name change | New-name document, two newspapers or state gazette, notarised affidavit |
| Spelling correction | At least one government or school document |
Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural PLI (RPLI) in West Bengal: The Basics
Postal Life Insurance is India Post's life insurance for government employees and many other salaried and professional people. Rural Postal Life Insurance serves people living in rural areas. Both are serviced through post offices and India Post's PLI Central Processing Centres (CPCs).
The policy bond carries the insurant's name. That name is what counts at maturity or in a claim, so it should match your current ID.
India Post issued a Standard Operating Procedure for name change requests in PLI and RPLI policies on 5 May 2022 (F. No. 25-04/SOP/2020-LI). It lists five cases and the proof for each.
If your policy bond already matches your ID, there is nothing to do.
Name Change on PLI or RPLI After Marriage, Divorce or a Spouse's Death
For a surname change after marriage, the SOP accepts the marriage certificate, a passport copy showing the spouse's name, a gazette publication, a sale or mutation deed, or a court document.
After a divorce, add the divorce decree; after a spouse's death, the spouse's death certificate. Remarriage is covered in the same category.
If your marriage certificate itself has an error, correct it first; see marriage certificate correction.
Legal Name Change on a PLI or RPLI Policy: Newspapers or Gazette Plus Affidavit
For a name changed for personal reasons, the SOP lists three things: a government document in the new name, two newspaper clippings or a state gazette notification, and a notarised affidavit on stamp paper.
In West Bengal, the state gazette is the Kolkata Gazette Part II, for adults living in the state; see gazette name change in West Bengal. The SOP names a state gazette; ask the post office whether it also accepts the Gazette of India.
Get Aadhaar and PAN in the new name first, so you have the government document the SOP asks for.
Spelling Correction in a PLI or RPLI Policy: One Government or School Document
For a misspelling, an abbreviation or a missing part of the name, the SOP asks for at least one document issued by the Government of India or a school document showing the correct name.
This is the easiest case. Aadhaar, PAN, a passport or the Madhyamik certificate usually does; see school certificate name correction if that itself is wrong.
You do not need a gazette or us for a simple spelling correction.
Where to Apply for a PLI or RPLI Name Change: Any Post Office or PLI CPC
The SOP says the application can be given at any branch, sub or head post office, or at a PLI CPC. You submit the application form, self-attested ID and address proof, the original policy bond, and the original supporting documents for comparison.
The post office checks the originals, gives an acknowledgement and keeps the bond. The CPC checks and approves, and sends an approval letter with the corrected bond by registered post.
If you cannot visit, the SOP allows an authorised adult messenger, with a medical certificate if you are unwell, or a passport copy if you are abroad.
Nominee Name Change on PLI and RPLI Policies
The nominee receives the money if the insurant dies. India Post has a separate form for registering or changing a nomination.
If a nominee's name has changed, for example a daughter who married, update the nomination at the same visit.
A correct nominee name saves the family from a legal heir process later.
PLI and RPLI Death Claim When the Insurant's or Claimant's Name Differs
India Post's customer guidelines list the original policy bond or a letter of indemnity, the death certificate, proof of relationship, the claimant's ID and address proof, and bank details. For an unnatural death, the post-mortem report and FIR are also needed.
If the insurant's name on the death certificate differs from the bond, correct the death certificate or give an affidavit linking the names; see one and the same person affidavit.
Other claims after the death use the same papers; see PMJJBY and PMSBY claims.
