PMJJBY and PMSBY Claim Name Mismatch in West Bengal
Many bank account holders in West Bengal are covered by two low-cost government insurance schemes: Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) for death from any cause, and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) for accidental death and disability. The premium is auto-debited from the bank account, so the family often learns of the cover only after a death. The claim goes through the bank or post office, and it can stall when the insured's name on the bank record, the death certificate and the nominee's papers do not agree. This page shows how families can fix that within the time limit.

PMJJBY and PMSBY Claim Name Mismatch (Quick Answer)
A PMJJBY or PMSBY claim is filed at the bank or post office where the insured had the account, preferably within 30 days of the death. The insured's name on the bank record should match the death certificate, and the nominee's name should match their own ID and bank account. If they differ, correct the death certificate or give an affidavit linking the names, and ask the branch to certify the account holder's identity. If there is no nominee, legal heirs need a legal heir or succession certificate.

| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Death certificate spelling differs from bank | Correct it or give an affidavit |
| Nominee recorded by a nickname | Nominee's ID with an affidavit |
| Wife's surname differs from bank nominee entry | Marriage proof and affidavit |
| Claimant's bank account in another spelling | Correct the claimant's account |
| No nominee recorded | Legal heir or succession certificate |
PMJJBY and PMSBY: Rs 2 Lakh Life and Accident Cover Explained
PMJJBY is life cover of Rs 2 lakh for death from any cause. PMSBY is accident cover: Rs 2 lakh for accidental death or total permanent disability, and Rs 1 lakh for partial permanent disability.
Both are renewed each year by auto-debit from the member's savings account at a bank or post office. Some people enrol at a bank counter or camp and forget about it.
After a death, check the deceased's passbook for small yearly debits marked PMJJBY or PMSBY. That is often the first sign the family is covered.
LIC's PMJJBY claim procedure notes that no claim is payable for a death within 30 days of joining, except an accidental death.
Where and When to File a PMJJBY or PMSBY Claim: Bank Branch Within 30 Days
LIC's procedure says the claim is filed at the bank or post office branch where the account was held, preferably within 30 days of the death. The bank then has up to 7 days to send it to the insurer, and the insurer up to 7 days to pay.
A guide says the window can be extended up to 90 days for valid reasons. Do not wait for every name problem to be solved before reporting the death; report it, then fix the papers.
The claim is free. You do not need an agent to file it.
Insured's Name Differs From the Death Certificate in a PMJJBY Claim
The bank knows the insured by the name on the account. The death certificate may carry another spelling, a nickname or the father's name differently. LIC's procedure accepts proof of death such as the death certificate, a hospital discharge summary or a doctor's certificate.
If the death certificate is wrong, ask the Registrar that registered the death to correct it; the West Bengal portal is janma-mrityutathya.wb.gov.in. If only a small spelling differs, an affidavit by the nominee linking the names usually helps; see one and the same person affidavit.
Ask the branch manager to note on the claim that the account holder and the deceased are the same person, based on the account's KYC.
Nominee Name Recorded Wrongly at PMJJBY or PMSBY Enrolment
At enrolment, the nominee is often written in a hurry: only a first name, a home name, or a maiden surname for a wife. The claimant's own ID will show something else.
Carry the nominee's Aadhaar or voter card, proof of the relationship such as a marriage certificate or ration card, and an affidavit linking the name on the enrolment to the name on the ID.
The claim money is paid into the claimant's bank account, so that account must be in the claimant's correct name; see name correction in a bank account.
PMSBY Accident Claims: FIR and Post-Mortem Names
For an accidental death under PMSBY, a guide lists the FIR, post-mortem report and death certificate among the papers. Each of these carries the deceased's name, written by different offices.
If the FIR or post-mortem has a wrong name, tell the police station in writing and give the deceased's ID. The same papers are used in a road accident claim; see motor accident claim name mismatch.
For disability, a guide lists a disability certificate from a civil surgeon and the medical records.
No Nominee: PMJJBY Claim by Legal Heirs With a Succession or Heir Certificate
LIC's procedure says that if there is no nominee, or the nominee died first, the claim is paid to the legal heirs on production of a succession certificate or legal heir certificate.
In West Bengal, a legal heir certificate is issued through the local administration, and a succession certificate by a court. The court route is a lawyer's job; the District Legal Services Authority gives free legal aid to eligible people.
Make sure each heir's name matches their own ID before applying.
Other Claims After a Death: Widow Pension and Atal Pension Yojana
The same papers serve many claims. A widow may also apply for a pension; see widow pension name mismatch.
If the deceased was in Atal Pension Yojana, that is a separate claim through the bank; see Atal Pension Yojana name correction.
Fix the name papers once, and use them for every claim.
