Elephant Attack Compensation Name Mismatch in West Bengal

When an elephant, tiger, leopard or other wild animal kills or injures someone, or flattens a house or a paddy field, the West Bengal Forest Department pays ex gratia. The claim passes through the forest range office, and the papers come from different hands: the police, the hospital, the Registrar, the Panchayat and the bank. If the victim or the heir is spelt one way in one paper and another way in the next, the payment can stop at the desk. This page shows how a family can line up the names. The claim itself is free.

Elephant Attack Compensation Name Mismatch (Quick Answer)

For wild animal attack compensation in West Bengal, the victim's name should match across the police report, post-mortem or hospital papers, and the death certificate, and the heir's name should match Aadhaar, the legal heir proof and the bank passbook. Get a wrong death certificate corrected by the Registrar, correct Aadhaar or the bank where needed, and give an affidavit for any small difference left. The claim costs nothing, and no gazette is normally needed. If a claim is refused, the District Legal Services Authority gives free legal aid.

Elephant and Wild Animal Attack Compensation in West Bengal: Forest Department Ex Gratia

The West Bengal Forest Department pays ex gratia for deaths and injuries caused by wild animals. A 2026 news report lists elephants, tigers, leopards, crocodiles, bears and bison as animals for which the department has paid, and says a Bengal fox death in Purulia was added that year.

Elephant conflict is heaviest in Jhargram, Bankura, Purulia and Paschim Medinipur in the south west, and in the Dooars of Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar in the north. Tiger attacks are mostly in the Sundarbans. A June 2026 report says the department paid about Rs 10 crore a year for elephant damage, mostly for crops.

The claim starts at the local forest range or beat office. Staff usually visit the spot and write a report. The family then gives papers that prove the death, injury or loss, and who should be paid.

Nothing about this claim needs an agent or a fee. If the papers already match, the family can apply on its own. Read on only if a name differs somewhere.

Amount

How Much Compensation Is Paid for an Elephant or Tiger Attack in West Bengal

Sources do not agree on the current figure, so we name the conflict instead of guessing. A November 2018 report said the state doubled death compensation to Rs 4 lakh, with Rs 4,300 or Rs 12,700 for hospital stays and up to Rs 2 lakh for loss of sight. Reports from 2026 say families received Rs 5 lakh after a death, and describe one contractual forest job offered per family.

The central environment ministry's 2018 guideline suggested Rs 5 lakh for death or permanent incapacity, Rs 2 lakh for grievous injury and up to Rs 25,000 for minor injury, but each state sets its own rates.

Ask the range office for the rate in force on the date of the attack, in writing if possible. Rates change, and the figure in your area may differ from these reports.

Victim

The Victim's Name in the Police Report, Post-Mortem and Death Certificate

After a death, the police write an inquest or General Diary entry, the hospital writes the post-mortem report and the Registrar issues the death certificate. In villages a person is often known by a nickname, a short form or a Bengali, Santali or Nepali spelling, so each paper can read differently. See Santali name spelling and Bengali and English name differences on Aadhaar.

If the death certificate is wrong, the Registrar of Births and Deaths that registered the death corrects it; the West Bengal portal is janma-mrityutathya.wb.gov.in. In a census town or village, that registering body is usually the Gram Panchayat. If the police report has a wrong name, tell the police station in writing and give the victim's Aadhaar.

A May 2026 field report from the Sundarbans says families met name spelling differences across records and needed affidavits to resolve them. The same report says a 2016 notification does not make a post-mortem compulsory, a point that matters where a body was never found. Ask the range office what it will accept in that case.

Heirs

Legal Heirs' Names for the Compensation: Widow, Children and Parents

After a death, the money goes to the legal heirs. Each heir's name should be the same on Aadhaar, the heir or family proof and the bank passbook. A widow whose Aadhaar shows her husband's surname and whose voter card shows her maiden name should carry marriage proof and an affidavit.

Ask the range office which heir proof it wants. Some offices accept a family certificate from the Panchayat or BDO; a larger estate may need a succession certificate from a court, which is a lawyer's job.

The same name papers often serve a widow pension claim. Fix them once and use them for both.

Crops and Houses

Elephant Crop Damage and House Damage Claims: Khatian and Owner Names

Elephants trample paddy, potato and vegetable fields and break mud houses. The forest department pays for these losses too. The range office may ask for land papers, so the farmer's name on the khatian should match Aadhaar and the passbook.

If the khatian still shows a dead parent's name, it needs mutation; see mutation and name correction on Banglarbhumi. If only the spelling differs, an affidavit may be enough; ask the range office first.

The same land record is used for Krishak Bandhu and PM Kisan and Bangla Shasya Bima crop insurance, so one correction helps all three.

Bank

Bank Account Name for the Wild Animal Compensation Payment

Ex gratia is paid into a bank account. The account holder's name must match the claimant's name in the claim papers.

If the passbook shows a different spelling, correct it at the branch before the money is released; see name correction in a bank account.

Do not open a second account in a new spelling while the claim is pending.

If Refused

Wild Animal Compensation Refused or Delayed: What Families Can Do

The May 2026 Sundarbans report describes claims refused because the death happened in a prohibited forest area, police stations unwilling to record a complaint, and job applications pending for years. It says some families went to the Calcutta High Court with help from legal aid.

A refusal on a legal ground is a lawyer's job, not ours. The District Legal Services Authority gives free legal aid to eligible people; see wbslsa.gov.in.

If the only problem is a name, the fix is usually a corrected record and an affidavit, and we can help with those papers.
