Widow Pension Name Mismatch in West Bengal: Your Name, Your Husband's Name and the Death Certificate
The West Bengal Widow Pension Scheme, run by the Women and Child Development and Social Welfare Department and now part of the Jai Bangla family of pensions, pays a monthly pension by DBT into the widow's own bank account. Two names are checked: hers, on her Aadhaar, voter card and passbook, and her husband's, on his death certificate. If the death certificate spells his name differently from her voter card, or her own name is in her maiden form on one paper and married form on another, the file can stall. This page shows how to fix each.

Widow Pension Name Mismatch (Quick Answer)
For a widow pension in West Bengal, the husband's name on his death certificate must match the husband's name on her voter card or Aadhaar, and her own name must match her passbook. A wrong spelling on the death certificate is corrected by the Registrar that issued it. For her own name, correct the bank or voter card, or give an affidavit linking maiden and married forms. No gazette is needed, and the form is free.

| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Husband's name spelt differently on death certificate | Registrar of births and deaths corrects it |
| Her voter card shows maiden name | Form 8 to update, or affidavit |
| Passbook in a short or old name | Correct it at the branch |
| Joint account with the late husband | Open or convert to her own account |
| No marriage certificate | Voter card or ration card showing husband's name, plus affidavit |
West Bengal Widow Pension Scheme, 2010: How It Works
The West Bengal Widow Pension Scheme, 2010 is run by the Women and Child Development and Social Welfare Department. Forms are free at the Block Development Officer in rural areas, the Sub-Divisional Officer in municipal areas, and the Controller of Vagrancy in Kolkata, and are sanctioned by the District Magistrate or the Controller of Vagrancy.
The pension is paid by DBT into the widow's bank account. Guides to the Jai Bangla umbrella list it among the Rs 1,000 a month pensions; an older block office page shows Rs 750, so amounts have changed over time.
Papers usually asked for are the husband's death certificate, age proof, a copy of the bank passbook, an income certificate, and the ration card and voter ID.
For the old age pensions under Jai Bangla, see Jai Bangla old age pension name mismatch.
Widow Pension Eligibility in West Bengal: Where Sources Differ
Older scheme pages say the widow must not be maintained by relatives, her family income must not exceed Rs 1,000 a month, and she must be a West Bengal resident. Some pages say she must be 60 or older; guides to Jai Bangla describe a destitute widow aged 18 or older.
We name this difference rather than guess. Ask the BDO, SDO or Controller of Vagrancy which rules they apply to you now.
All versions agree on one thing: a widow who remarries is no longer a widow for this pension.
Husband's Death Certificate: His Name Must Match Her ID Papers
The husband's death certificate is the key paper. His name on it should match his name as it appears on her voter card, ration card or Aadhaar, where Indian IDs often show a husband's name.
If the death certificate spells his name wrongly, the Registrar of Births and Deaths at the municipality or Gram Panchayat that registered the death corrects it. That is a Registrar correction, not a gazette matter. The West Bengal portal is janma-mrityutathya.wb.gov.in.
If his name differs only in form, such as initials or a missing surname, an affidavit from her linking the forms is usually enough.
The Widow's Own Name: Maiden Name, Married Name and Bank Passbook
Her own name should match on Aadhaar, the voter card and the passbook. If one shows her maiden name and another her married name, update the odd one out or give an affidavit; see one and the same person affidavit.
A voter card can be updated free through Form 8; see voter ID name change after marriage. The ration card can be corrected through the food department; see name change in ration card.
Do not change her name to something new now. Keep the name the records already share.
No Marriage Certificate? Proving the Marriage for a Widow Pension
Some marriages were never registered. The office then relies on other papers that show the husband's name with hers, such as her voter card, the ration card, or the husband's papers naming her.
If none of these link the two clearly, the office may ask for more, such as a sworn affidavit. Ask what it will accept. If a marriage certificate exists but has an error, see marriage certificate correction.
Widow Pension Bank Account: Convert a Joint Account to Her Sole Name
The pension goes to the widow's bank account by DBT. A joint account with the late husband can cause trouble; ask the branch to convert it to her sole name with the death certificate.
The account holder's name should match her Aadhaar. If the passbook shows a different spelling, correct it; see name correction in a bank account.
If she changes banks later, tell the office so the next credit does not fail.
