Demat Name Change Request Goes to Your Broker or DP, Not NSDL or CDSL
Your shares sit in an account maintained by a depository participant, which is the broker or bank you opened it with. The DP holds your beneficial owner details and is the office that updates them.
So the request does not go to the depository itself, and it does not go to the companies whose shares you hold. That is the difference from physical certificates, where the company's registrar acts and the original certificate has to travel.
Why this half is easier
One account holds everything in it, so one request reaches every shareholding inside. Nothing is printed, nothing is posted, and no certificate can be lost in transit.
Update Aadhaar and PAN Before Your Demat Account
A demat account is KYC linked, and PAN is the identifier your details are verified against. A name request that contradicts the PAN record gives the DP nothing to rely on, so it stops.
Update Aadhaar first, then PAN, since a PAN correction is itself checked against Aadhaar. Only then send the request to the DP. It is the same order as everywhere else in this cluster, and skipping it is the commonest reason a file stalls.
Do not resubmit
If a request is pending, let it finish. Sending a second one while the first is open tends to confuse the record rather than speed anything up.
Demat Name Correction vs Change of Name: Two Different Tracks
Minor correction. A spelling put right, initials expanded or abbreviated, or a middle name added. The person is plainly the same and the name never actually changed, so identity documents are the proof.
Change of name. You are asking for a name you did not previously use, whether after marriage, after divorce, or for your own reasons. That needs a link document.
Work out which you are before filling anything in, because the form itself will ask you to say so.
The initials case is common
Older records often carry initials while PAN spells the name in full. That is a correction, not a change, and it should not need a gazette.
The Demat Name Change Declaration: Marriage, Divorce, Court Order or Numerology
On the minor correction track, a DP will ordinarily ask you to declare that the correction is not the result of marriage, divorce, a court order or numerology. That sentence is not a formality. It is how the two tracks are kept apart.
So if any of those is the reason, you are on the wrong form, and signing it would be declaring something untrue. Move to the change of name track with the marriage certificate, the decree or the gazette, which is what it is designed for.
Numerology, honestly
People do change spellings for astrological reasons, and there is nothing wrong with that. It is simply a change of name rather than a correction, and it needs a gazette like any other.

Several Demat Accounts: Every Broker Needs Its Own Request
If you hold accounts with more than one broker, each DP needs its own request. There is no single place where a name change reaches all of them.
Include the dormant account you opened years ago and stopped using. Those are precisely the ones that surface awkwardly later, usually when somebody is trying to consolidate holdings or claim them.
Make the list first
Broker, account, and whether it still holds anything. It takes ten minutes and it is the difference between finishing this once and discovering a straggler in five years.
Updating the Linked Bank Account and Trading Account
A demat account rarely sits alone. There is usually a trading account beside it and a linked bank account that payouts run through. Dividends, sale proceeds and refunds land there.
If the bank record still carries the old name while the demat account carries the new one, a credit can be queried at exactly the wrong moment. Update the bank in the same round of work rather than later.
Mutual funds too
Folios held outside the demat account have their own records and their own registrars. Worth listing them while you have the file open.
Demat Nomination Does Not Change With Your Name
A nomination stays exactly as it was recorded until you change it. Updating your name does not touch who is nominated, and neither does anything else on this page.
Which is worth a moment's thought, because a name change often follows a marriage or a divorce, and a nomination made before either may no longer say what you would want it to say.
A separate, short form
Changing a nomination is its own request. If you are already writing to the DP, it is the cheapest moment to deal with it.

Does PAN really have to be updated first?
Yes, in practice. A demat account is KYC-linked and PAN is the identifier everything is checked against, so a request that contradicts the PAN record tends to stop. Update Aadhaar, then PAN, then approach the DP.
What about the bank account linked to my demat?
Update it too, and the trading account alongside it. Payouts run through the linked bank account, and a name that no longer matches can cause a credit to be queried at exactly the wrong moment.
