Sovereign Gold Bond Name Correction in West Bengal
Many families in West Bengal bought Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGB) between 2015 and early 2024 through a bank, a post office or a broker. No new tranche has been issued since February 2024, but the old bonds run for eight years, so redemptions are coming due now. At redemption, the money goes to the bank account in the bond holder's name. If that name, the PAN or the bank account do not match, or the holder has died, the payout can stop. This page explains how to correct the name whether your bond is held as a certificate of holding or in a demat account.

Sovereign Gold Bond Name Correction (Quick Answer)
If your Sovereign Gold Bond is held as a certificate of holding, correct the name through the bank, post office or agent where you applied, with PAN and Aadhaar in the correct name and proof of the change. If it is in a demat account, correct the name with your depository participant. Make sure the bank account that receives interest and redemption money is in the same name. After the holder dies, the nominee or heirs claim with the death certificate and a new nominee form. There is no fee for a name correction.

| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Bond held as certificate, name wrong | Receiving office where you applied |
| Bond in demat, name wrong | Your depository participant |
| Bank account for payouts in another spelling | Correct the bank account |
| PAN in a different name | Correct PAN first |
| Holder died | Nominee or heirs claim with death certificate |
Sovereign Gold Bond Basics: RBI-Issued Bonds Priced in Grams of Gold
Sovereign Gold Bonds are government bonds issued by the Reserve Bank of India for the government, priced in grams of gold. They pay interest twice a year and are repaid at the gold price of the day. Guides say they run for eight years, with early redemption allowed after five years on interest dates.
A report says no new SGB tranche has been issued since February 2024. Existing bonds continue, so the work now is servicing: interest, redemption and claims.
Every application needed the holder's PAN. Bonds could be held jointly or by a guardian for a minor, and a nomination facility is available.
If your bond holder name, PAN and payout bank account already match, you have nothing to correct. Read on only if they differ.
Is Your Sovereign Gold Bond a Certificate of Holding or in Demat?
Bonds are held in one of two ways. Some investors got a certificate of holding in the Reserve Bank's books, through the bank, post office or agent where they applied, called the receiving office. Others asked for the bond in their demat account.
Look at your purchase papers or email. A certificate of holding names the receiving office. A demat bond shows in your demat statement.
The place where it is held decides who corrects the name.
SGB Name Correction for a Certificate of Holding: Go to the Receiving Office
Go to the receiving office, the bank branch or post office where you applied. Ask for a change in investor details, with PAN and Aadhaar in the correct name and proof of the change.
For a married woman, the marriage certificate with her new ID is the usual proof; for a full change of name, a gazette; for a small spelling error, ID and an affidavit; see one and the same person affidavit.
If PAN itself is in a different name, correct it first; see PAN and Aadhaar mismatch.
SGB Name Correction in Demat: Correct the Demat Account With Your DP
If the bond is in demat, the name follows your demat account. Correct the demat account name with your depository participant, and the bonds in it follow; see demat account name change.
Guides say converting a certificate into demat needs the original certificate, PAN and a bank manager's recommendation. Correct the name before converting, so both records match.
Bonds in demat can also be sold on the stock exchange, which needs the demat name to match your PAN.
Bank Account Name for SGB Interest and Redemption
Interest and redemption money are paid into the bank account registered for the bond. If that account is closed, or in another spelling, the money can be returned.
Correct the bank account name, and tell the receiving office or DP if the account itself has changed; see name correction in a bank account.
Do this well before your redemption date, as bonds from 2016 to 2018 are maturing or redeemable now.
Sovereign Gold Bond After the Holder's Death: Nominee or Succession Certificate
Guides say the nominee, or the executor, administrator or holder of a succession certificate, can claim the bonds. The claimant gives the death certificate, a new application and a new nominee form, Form D.
If the holder's name on the death certificate differs from the bond, correct the death certificate or explain the difference by affidavit.
Without a nominee, the office may ask for a succession certificate, which is a court process and a lawyer's job. The District Legal Services Authority gives free legal aid to eligible people.
SGB Joint Holders and Bonds Bought for a Minor: Names Must Match PAN
Joint holding is allowed, and the investment limit applies to the first holder. Each joint holder's name should match their PAN.
For a minor, the guardian applied. When the child grows up, their own PAN and bank details take over, so the name should match their ID; see name change in Aadhaar.
If a joint holder dies, the surviving holder usually continues, with the death certificate.
