IEPF Unclaimed Shares Refund Name Mismatch in West Bengal
Kolkata was home to many old listed companies, and many families still find share certificates in a cupboard. If dividends went unclaimed for seven years, the shares and dividends were moved to the Investor Education and Protection Fund (IEPF). Getting them back means filing Form IEPF-5, and the claim is checked by the company and the IEPF Authority. A common hold-up is a name mismatch: the certificate shows a maiden name or initials, while PAN, Aadhaar, the demat account and the bank show another. This page explains how to line up the names before you file.

IEPF Refund Name Mismatch (Quick Answer)
Before filing Form IEPF-5, make the names agree across the share certificate or company record, PAN, Aadhaar, your demat account and your bank. Where they cannot be changed, guides say the difference must be declared and is usually explained by an affidavit, with proof such as a marriage certificate or gazette. If the shareholder has died, complete transmission to the heir first. File IEPF-5 on the MCA portal, then send the papers to the company's nodal officer, who has 30 days to verify.

| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Certificate in maiden name | Marriage certificate and affidavit |
| Certificate in initials only | Affidavit linking full name and initials |
| Demat account in another spelling | Correct the demat name first |
| Shareholder has died | Transmission to the heir first |
| Bank account in another spelling | Correct the bank account |
What IEPF Is: Shares Moved After 7 Years of Unpaid Dividend
Under the Companies Act, 2013, when a dividend stays unpaid for seven consecutive years, the company moves the unpaid money, and the shares behind it, to the Investor Education and Protection Fund.
The shares are not lost. The holder or their heirs can claim them back, with the dividends, by filing Form IEPF-5.
Many West Bengal families hold shares bought decades ago in tea, jute, engineering and other companies, often in a parent's or grandparent's name, sometimes with initials only.
Guides note that the IEPF website is for searching; the claim form itself is filed on the MCA portal.
IEPF Claim Names: Share Certificate, PAN, Aadhaar and Bank Must Agree
A guide names a frequent problem: a mismatch between the certificate, PAN, Aadhaar and bank record, often because a surname changed after marriage or the certificate uses initials.
The same guide says a mismatch is not automatically fatal, but it must be declared, not hidden, and is usually resolved with an affidavit during verification.
So list the name exactly as it appears on each paper before you start: certificate or company letter, PAN, Aadhaar, demat client master list, and cancelled cheque.
Old Share Certificates in a Maiden Name or Initials
For a woman whose certificate shows her maiden name, the marriage certificate links it to her current PAN name. For a full change of name, a gazette is the strongest proof; see gazette name change in West Bengal.
For initials, such as S K Banerjee on the certificate and Sunil Kumar Bandyopadhyay on PAN, an affidavit linking the forms is the usual route; see one and the same person affidavit.
If the company's own record can be corrected first, do that. For physical shares, the KYC and name change with the company's registrar are explained in share certificate name change.
Demat Account and Bank Account in the Right Name Before an IEPF Claim
Shares come back from IEPF into your demat account, and the dividend refund goes to your bank. A guide lists the demat client master list and a cancelled cheque among the papers.
If the demat account is in another spelling, correct it first; see demat account name change. Do the same for the bank; see name correction in a bank account.
Your demat and bank names should match PAN. That way the only difference left is between the old certificate and today's name, which the affidavit explains.
IEPF Claim by Legal Heirs: Transmission First, Then IEPF-5
A guide says transmission to the legal heir has to be completed before the IEPF claim is filed. That means the heir first gets the shares recorded in their name, with the death certificate and succession papers.
If the shareholder's name on the death certificate differs from the certificate, correct the death certificate or explain the difference by affidavit.
Succession certificates and probate are court processes and a lawyer's job. The District Legal Services Authority gives free legal aid to eligible people.
Filing Form IEPF-5 on the MCA Portal and the Nodal Officer's Verification
Guides describe the steps: fill IEPF-5 on the MCA portal, note the service request number, then send the signed form and papers to the company's nodal officer. The company verifies and reports within 30 days.
A guide says that from October 2025, an entitlement letter from the company is a required attachment. Ask the company's registrar for it early.
Guides say the IEPF Authority may ask for more papers, to be given within 15 days, and usually decides within about 60 days of a complete verification report.
Do You Need an Agent for an IEPF Refund Claim? Usually Not
Many firms offer IEPF recovery for a share of the value. A simple claim with matching names can be filed by the holder or heir.
If the names do not match, the key papers are the affidavit, marriage certificate or gazette. We help only with those name papers, not the claim itself.
Never sign over a percentage of your shares without reading the agreement carefully.
