About GATE 2027 for West Bengal Candidates
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is the national test for M.Tech, M.E. and direct PhD admission, and for many PSU recruitments. IIT Madras is organising GATE 2027 on gate2027.iitm.ac.in, and applications go through the GOAPS portal.
The official site lists these dates (it says dates can change): registration opened on 2 September 2026, the regular deadline is 5 October 2026, and the extended deadline with a late fee is 12 October 2026. Exams run on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, with results on 19 March 2027.
Reports of the GATE 2027 fee list Rs 1,000 per paper for women, SC, ST and PwD candidates and Rs 2,000 for others, plus Rs 500 in the extended period. The fee is not refundable.
Every West Bengal engineering graduate who sits GATE carries a pile of papers with their name on it: Madhyamik certificate, WBJEE rank card, university marksheets, degree, Aadhaar and PAN. GATE 2027 is often the first form that pulls the name straight from a government database instead of letting you type it.
GATE 2027 Fetches Your Name From DigiLocker
The GATE 2027 site says registration through DigiLocker is mandatory for all Indian nationals. The official FAQ says your address and date of birth are fetched from DigiLocker or Aadhaar, and the name comes from the verified document you choose. You need a verified DigiLocker account, shown with a blue tick. If your mobile number is linked to more than one account, use the verified one.
The FAQ also says the photo on Aadhaar or DigiLocker is not used. GATE takes a live photo and the recent photo you upload. So an old Aadhaar photo is not a problem. A wrong name on Aadhaar is.
This is where West Bengal names trip. Aadhaar often carries a spelling chosen by an enrolment operator: Chattopadhyay against Chatterjee, Md against Mohammad, a missing middle name, or an English spelling that does not match the Bengali. Do not delete the DigiLocker account after you pay. The GATE site says later messages will go to the account you applied with.
When Your Aadhaar Name Is Wrong for GATE
The GATE 2027 FAQ gives a direct answer: if Aadhaar or DigiLocker shows a wrong name or date of birth, you can choose one of the other verified documents from the list (Aadhaar, PAN, Driving Licence, APAAR ID) that carries the correct details, before you submit the application.

Which Paper Your GATE Name Should Match
Match your degree certificate or, if you are in final year, your university marksheets. M.Tech admission through COAP or CCMT and PSU recruitment both check the degree against the GATE scorecard. Your Madhyamik (Class 10) certificate is the usual tie breaker, because it fixes your name and date of birth.

Initials, surname first, or a dropped middle name are not errors on their own. Colleges and PSUs usually accept an affidavit that both forms are you. See name order and format mismatch.
The GATE 2027 Correction Window: What You Can Change
The official FAQ says you cannot modify the application after the PDF form is generated, but that a name spelling error can be corrected later, in a set time, by furnishing supporting documents. It names October 2026 for data correction. Reports by Collegedunia and Shiksha put the window at 14 to 21 October 2026; confirm on the GATE site.
Paper, exam city and category changes are also allowed against an extra payment, the FAQ says. Your enrolment ID and registered email stay locked.
The fee for a name change is not clear. A Collegedekho report on GATE 2026 listed Rs 500 for a name or date of birth change. A Collegedunia guide to GATE 2027 lists the DigiLocker-linked name as free to correct. We cannot confirm either, so pay what GOAPS shows on the day. Keep your supporting document ready as a PDF: degree, marksheet, Class 10 certificate or the corrected ID.
GATE for Married Candidates: Old Name on the Photo ID
Many women in West Bengal sit GATE after marriage, with the degree in the maiden name and some IDs in the married name. The GATE 2027 FAQ covers this: upload the photo ID in the old name with an affidavit, and carry the affidavit with the photo ID into the exam hall.

Our honest advice: if your degree is in the maiden name and you still hold a valid ID in that name, applying in the maiden name keeps the scorecard and degree identical. You then link both names with the marriage certificate at joining.
GATE Exam Day ID Rule and West Bengal Exam Cities
The official FAQ says you must bring the original, valid photo ID named in your application, not a photocopy, scan or expired card, plus a printed admit card. The admit card is due on 4 January 2027. If the ID you carry is not the one on the form, or its name differs from the admit card without an affidavit, you risk being turned away.

GATE Scorecard Name Mismatch: M.Tech Admission and PSU Jobs
The official FAQ is plain: no change can be made to an issued scorecard, because its data is already shared with admitting institutes, COAP and PSUs. The score is valid for three years. So a spelling you miss now stays with you through every M.Tech round and PSU interview in that time.
The FAQ also says admission based on the GATE score is not under the GATE organising institute. Each IIT, NIT, Jadavpur University, IIEST Shibpur or PSU decides what proof it accepts when names differ.
In practice, a small difference (initials, order, one letter) is usually settled with a one and the same person affidavit, with your degree and Class 10 certificate. PSUs that recruit through GATE often check documents strictly at joining, so carry the affidavit and every original.
A Real Change of Name Before or After GATE
If you really changed your name (not a spelling slip), the GATE form follows whatever your verified ID says. Change the ID first. For that you usually need a gazette notification; see gazette name change in West Bengal.
Remember: a gazette is supporting proof, not a correction. It does not change your degree, Aadhaar or GATE scorecard by itself. Each record is updated one by one, and GATE will not reissue a scorecard because of it.
