WB SET Application Name Mismatch: The Certificate Prints What You Type
When you apply for the West Bengal State Eligibility Test (WB SET), the College Service Commission asks for no certificate or document. Nobody checks your name at this stage. So your SET certificate is issued in whatever name you typed, and a mismatch with your Master's degree shows up only years later, when a college checks your papers. This page shows which name to use, how to use the edit window, and what to do if it is already wrong.

WB SET Name Mismatch (Quick Answer)
For WB SET, type your name, father's name and date of birth exactly as your certificates show them, and make sure your Madhyamik and Master's degree agree first. WBCSC does not check documents when you apply, so a typing error goes straight onto your SET certificate. Use the edit window (9 to 11 September in 2025) to fix mistakes; it costs nothing. The papers are checked later, when a college or the Commission appoints you.
| Problem | Usual fix |
|---|---|
| Typing mistake noticed before the edit window closes | Correct it in the edit window |
| Master's degree spelling differs from Madhyamik | Ask the university to correct the degree |
| Married surname on newer papers | Carry the marriage certificate |
| Initials, short forms or order | One and the same person affidavit |
| Wrong name already on the SET certificate | Write to WBCSC with proof |
About the WB SET and the College Service Commission
The West Bengal College Service Commission (WBCSC) holds the State Eligibility Test for the post of Assistant Professor in West Bengal. The 27th SET was held on 14 December 2025, with online applications from 1 August to 31 August 2025.
To appear, General and EWS candidates need at least 55% marks in a Master's degree, with 50% for reserved categories. There is no upper age limit.
Passing SET makes you eligible to apply for Assistant Professor posts. WBCSC issues a certificate to every qualified candidate, and that certificate stays with you through every later application.
Each round has its own notification on wbcsconline.in. Read it fully, because dates and rules change from round to round.
Why No Document Check at WB SET Is a Name Trap
The 2025 notification says candidates are neither required to send any certificate or document in support of their eligibility when they apply. It also says WBCSC will in no way be responsible for any wrong or incorrect information the candidate gives.
That is convenient, but it means nobody stops a mistake. If you type Sumana Chakraborty while your Master's degree says Sumana Chakrabarty, the SET certificate will carry your typed spelling. The difference surfaces only when a college or the Commission puts your SET certificate next to your degrees.
So be your own checker. Treat the form as if every field will be compared with your certificates later, because it will be.
Which Name to Type on the WB SET Form
Type your name exactly as your Master's degree certificate shows it, and make sure that agrees with your Madhyamik certificate, which is the oldest board record of your name. If the two agree, you are safe. If they do not, fix the wrong one before you apply, or at least before you get the SET certificate.
Do not copy from Aadhaar if it spells your name differently. Watch the usual traps: Md against Mohammad, a missing Kumar or Kumari, or the surname first on one paper and last on another. Our pages on Md, Mohd and Sk spellings and name order mismatch cover these.
Using the WB SET Edit Window
For the 27th SET, the notification gave an editing period of 9 to 11 September 2025 for submitted data, after applications closed on 31 August. That is only three days.
Log in and check every field during that window, even if you think the form is correct. The notification does not list which fields can be edited, so if a field you need is locked, write to WBCSC at once with proof and keep a copy.
Do not submit a second application to fix a mistake. Wait for the edit window or write to the Commission.
Master's Degree and Madhyamik Name Mismatch for WB SET
Many SET candidates find, only while filling the form, that their university spelt their name differently from the school board. A university works from the name on your admission papers, and a small slip at admission can follow you to the degree.
Ask your university to correct the degree, with a copy of your Madhyamik certificate. It can take months, so start early. Our guide on name change in education documents explains university corrections, and marksheet and school certificate correction covers the board side.
Married Women and Surname Change in WB SET
Many SET candidates finish a Master's degree in their maiden name and marry before they apply. Your degrees will carry the maiden name and your newer papers the married name.
Usually the safest choice is to apply in the name on your degrees and keep the marriage certificate ready, because degrees are not normally reissued in a married name. If you apply in your married name, the marriage certificate links it to your degrees. Our page on education documents after marriage explains the choice.
If Your WB SET Certificate Has the Wrong Name
Check the name on your SET certificate the day you receive it. If it carries a typing error you made, write to WBCSC with a copy of your Master's degree and Madhyamik certificate, explain the error, and keep a copy of your letter with proof of sending.
We could not find a published WBCSC procedure for correcting a SET certificate, so we cannot promise the answer. If it is not corrected, keep a one and the same person affidavit with the certificate, linking both spellings, and carry it whenever you apply.
If a genuine typing error costs you an appointment, that is a matter for a lawyer. Free legal aid is available through your District Legal Services Authority.
When Your WB SET Papers Are Checked
The check happens at the appointment stage, when you apply for an Assistant Professor post and the Commission or college asks for your SET certificate, degrees, and identity proof. That is when a mismatch has to be explained.
Once you join a government or aided college, your name goes into your service record. A later change follows the state rules: a woman taking her husband's surname, or going back to her maiden name, usually needs only an intimation; any other change needs a deed, a newspaper notice and a gazette. See name change for state government employees.
If You Really Changed Your Name After Your Degrees
If you changed your name by gazette after your degrees, none of your certificates will match your new name. Apply in the name WBCSC asks for in writing, and keep the gazette notification and an affidavit linking both names with your SET certificate.
If you need a gazette and do not have one, our gazette name change guide explains the state and central routes.
Mistakes That Hurt WB SET Candidates

The check comes later, at appointment. The SET certificate must match your degrees.

Aadhaar spellings often differ from degrees. Use the degree certificate.

It lasted three days in 2025. Check every field then.
Filing a second application
