UGC NET Application Name Mismatch: The Name Rule Changes Every Cycle
The UGC NET certificate decides your Assistant Professor eligibility, your JRF fellowship and often your PhD admission. It prints the name you typed. In some recent cycles the National Testing Agency (NTA) locked the name in the correction window; in June 2026 it let candidates fix only one of their own, father's or mother's name. In UGC NET, type your name exactly as your Master's degree and Class 10 certificate show it. Do not count on the correction window: NTA locked the name in June 2025 and December 2025, and allowed only one of your name, father's name or mother's name to change in June 2026. NTA notices say there is no second chance. Most small mismatches later need only an affidavit, which costs about Rs 50 to Rs 300.

About UGC NET for West Bengal Candidates
UGC NET is held twice a year by the National Testing Agency on ugcnet.nta.nic.in. It decides three things: eligibility for Assistant Professor, the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), and in many universities PhD admission.
Shiksha reported on 16 September 2026 that NTA has fixed the December 2026 exam for 14 to 19 December 2026, with 20 and 21 December as buffer days. The application form follows the notice, so check the NTA site for the exact registration and correction dates.
Many West Bengal candidates sit both UGC NET and the state's own WB SET. The two forms have different correction rules; see WB SET application name mismatch for the state test.
Fees in recent cycles were Rs 1,150 for General, Rs 600 for EWS and OBC-NCL, and Rs 325 for SC, ST, PwD and third gender candidates. Check the December 2026 bulletin, since fees can be revised.
How the UGC NET Name Correction Rule Has Changed
NTA does not use one fixed rule. It sets the editable fields in a notice for each cycle, and the name field has gone both ways.
For June 2025, a Careers360 report on the NTA notice listed only four editable fields: date of birth, category, father's name and mother's name. The candidate's name was locked, along with gender, photo, signature, contact details, address and exam city. For December 2025, Careers360 reported the same: date of birth, category and parents' names could change, the name could not. The notice warned that the facility is given once and "no further opportunity for correction will be provided".
For June 2026, Testbook reported a wider window from 26 to 28 May 2026: date of birth, gender, category, subject, exam city and any one of candidate name, father name or mother name. That is the same one-of-three rule NTA used for CUET 2026; see our page on the CUET application name mismatch.
So the safe reading is simple. Treat your name as final when you submit. If the December 2026 notice lets you fix it, that is a bonus, not a plan.

Which Paper Your UGC NET Name Should Match
Match your Master's degree and marksheets. Colleges and universities check the NET certificate against them when you apply for an Assistant Professor post or a PhD seat. Your Madhyamik (Class 10) certificate is the tie breaker, because it fixes your name and date of birth.

Initials, surname first or a dropped middle name are not errors. A format difference is settled with an affidavit; see name order and format mismatch.

Aadhaar Name and the UGC NET Form
NTA forms ask for an identity document and you must carry an original photo ID to the exam centre, usually Aadhaar. If Aadhaar spells your name differently from your degree, you have two choices.
The cleaner choice is to correct Aadhaar first, with your Class 10 certificate or degree as proof. Aadhaar allows a name change only twice in a lifetime, so do it once and do it right. See name change in Aadhaar.
The quicker choice is to apply in the degree spelling and carry an affidavit that the Aadhaar name and the form name are the same person. This works for small differences. It is weak for a different surname.
Whichever you choose, the name on the form, the ID you carry and the admit card should not leave an invigilator guessing.
The UGC NET December 2026 Correction Window
NTA usually opens one short correction window, often two or three days, soon after registration closes. Testbook's estimate for December 2026 is early November, but only the NTA notice counts.
When it opens, read the notice for the list of editable fields before you log in. If it allows only one of your name, father's name or mother's name, fix the one that will print on your certificate and matter most, which is usually your own name. Parents' names can be linked later by an affidavit if a university asks.
An extra fee applies only where a change raises your fee, such as a category change. The NTA notices say any additional fee is paid online by card, net banking or UPI. Photo and signature have been locked in recent windows, so upload them right the first time.
UGC NET for Married Women: Maiden Name or Married Name
Many women in West Bengal sit UGC NET after marriage, with the M.A. or M.Sc. degree in the maiden name and Aadhaar in the married name.
Pick the name your degree carries if you still hold a valid ID in that name. Your NET certificate and degree then match exactly, and the marriage certificate links them to your married name when you join. Universities do not normally reissue a degree in a married name, so do not wait for that before applying.
UGC NET e-Certificate Name Mismatch: What Can Be Done
Once results are out, NTA issues e-certificates and JRF award letters with the name in its records. NTA notices say no correction is entertained after the correction window, and we have not seen a published route to reissue a NET certificate in a new spelling. Write to NTA anyway if the error is NTA's own, with proof, and keep the reply.
For your own typing error, the practical fix is an affidavit that both spellings are one person, supported by your degree and Class 10 certificate. See one and the same person affidavit. UGC NET Name Mismatch in Assistant Professor Jobs, JRF and PhD Admission
Assistant Professor recruitment. State university and college posts in West Bengal go through the College Service Commission or the university itself. At document verification they put your NET certificate beside your degree, Aadhaar and caste certificate. Carry the affidavit and every original.
JRF fellowship. The fellowship is paid into your bank account through the university. If the bank account, Aadhaar and NET award letter spell your name differently, payment can get stuck. Make the bank and Aadhaar agree first.
PhD admission. Calcutta University, Jadavpur University and other institutions admit NET qualified candidates through their own notices. Each asks for the NET certificate at verification and decides what linking proof it accepts.
A Real Change of Name Before or After UGC NET

Remember: a gazette is supporting proof, not a correction. It does not rewrite your degree, Aadhaar or NET certificate. Each record is updated one by one, and NTA will not reissue an old certificate because of it. Keep the gazette with your old certificate as the link.
