WBCS Document Verification Name Mismatch: Clear It Before the Personality Test
The WBCS (Exe.) examination takes years of preparation, and a small mismatch can still cause trouble at the very end. The Commission accepts your age only as recorded in the Madhyamik or equivalent certificate, and every certificate you claim, from your degree to your caste or EWS certificate, is checked before appointment. This page shows which name to use, what to correct early, and what to carry to verification.

WBCS Name Mismatch (Quick Answer)
For WBCS (Exe.), write your name, father's name and date of birth exactly as your Madhyamik or equivalent certificate shows them; the Commission accepts age only as recorded there. Before the personality test, make your graduation certificate and any caste, OBC or EWS certificate match that name; most corrections are free or low cost but slow. Carry a marriage certificate or one and the same person affidavit for any difference. Always follow the advertisement for your year on psc.wb.gov.in.
| Mismatch | Usual fix |
|---|---|
| Form name or date of birth differs from Madhyamik | Avoid it: copy from Madhyamik; use the edit window if one opens |
| Degree certificate spelling differs | Ask the university to correct it |
| Caste, OBC or EWS certificate differs | Correct it at the office that issued it |
| Married surname on newer papers | Carry the marriage certificate |
| Initials, short forms or order | One and the same person affidavit |
| A real change of name since Madhyamik | Gazette notification, plus the affidavit |
About the WBCS (Exe.) Examination and Its Documents
The Public Service Commission, West Bengal (WBPSC) holds the West Bengal Civil Service (Exe.) etc. Examination for posts in Groups A, B, C and D, including the West Bengal Civil Service (Executive) and the West Bengal Police Service. The round under Advertisement No. 08/2024 opened for online applications on 18 November 2025.
The selection has three stages: a Preliminary Examination, a Main Examination, and a Personality Test.
The basic qualification is a degree from a recognised university, with the ability to read, write and speak Bengali. Age limits differ by group and are counted on a fixed date given in the advertisement.
Each round has its own advertisement and announcements. Read them fully on psc.wb.gov.in, because rules on documents, age proof and editing can change from year to year.
The Madhyamik Age Rule in WBCS
Reports of the WBCS advertisement quote the rule plainly: age as recorded only in the Madhyamik or equivalent certificate will be accepted. A birth certificate, Aadhaar or affidavit showing a different date does not override it.
This makes your Madhyamik paper the anchor for your date of birth, and in practice for your name too, because the form, the admit card and the certificates are all read against it.
If your Madhyamik date of birth is itself wrong, that correction goes through the board, and only for a real error against the school admission register. Our page on date of birth correction explains how. Do it long before you apply.
Which Name to Use on the WBCS Application Form
Copy your name, father's name and date of birth from your Madhyamik certificate, letter by letter, in the same order. Do not copy from Aadhaar or a newer document if it spells your name differently.
If the Madhyamik paper says Md Rafiq Sk, write that. If it carries a middle name like Kumar or Chandra, keep it. Then line up your other papers or carry proof that links them. Our pages on Md, Mohd and Sk spellings and name order mismatch explain the common cases.
Using the WBCS Edit Window to Fix a Mistake
For the round under Advertisement No. 08/2024, the Commission opened an edit window in December 2025 after applications closed. Reports give different dates for it, which suggests it was extended, so rely on the Commission's own announcement for your round.
We could not confirm from the Commission's own notice which fields that window allowed. Some boards lock the name and date of birth completely. So read the announcement line by line, and if a field you need is allowed, fix it then. Do not wait for verification.
If the edit window does not allow your field, write to the Commission with proof and keep a copy. Do not submit a second application.
Graduation Certificate Name Mismatch for WBCS
A degree is the basic qualification, so your graduation marksheets and certificate are checked. If the university spelt your name differently from Madhyamik, ask your college to take up the correction with the university, with a copy of your Madhyamik certificate.
University corrections can take months. Start as soon as you plan to apply. Our guide on name change in education documents covers college and university records.
Caste, OBC and EWS Certificate Name Mismatch in WBCS
If you apply as SC, ST, OBC or EWS, your certificate must carry the same name and father's name as your Madhyamik paper. A different spelling is one of the most common reasons a category claim is questioned.
Get a wrong certificate corrected at the office that issued it. Do not apply for a fresh one in a new spelling; that leaves two genuine certificates in two names. An EWS certificate is valid for one financial year, so check its date against what the advertisement asks for. See caste certificate correction and EWS certificate correction.
Married Women and Surname Change in WBCS
If your Madhyamik and degree papers have your maiden name and your newer documents have your married name, apply in the Madhyamik name unless the advertisement says otherwise, and carry your marriage certificate. It links both names.
You do not need a gazette just because you took your husband's surname. If your marriage certificate has a mistake, fix it first; see marriage certificate correction.
Serving Government Employees Applying for WBCS
Many WBCS candidates already work for the state or another government. Your service book holds a name too, and it should match the name on your WBCS form and certificates.
If you changed your name after joining service, the West Bengal Finance Department rules apply. A woman taking her husband's surname, or going back to her maiden name, usually needs only an intimation; any other change needs a deed, a newspaper notice and a gazette. Our page on name change for state government employees explains the rules.
What to Carry for WBCS Document Verification
The Commission tells you which documents to bring. Expect to need originals with self-attested copies of:
- Madhyamik or equivalent certificate (the age proof)
- Graduation marksheets and certificate
- Caste, OBC or EWS certificate, if claimed
- Photo identity proof of the kind the advertisement lists
- Marriage certificate, if your surname changed by marriage
- A one and the same person affidavit, if your papers show different spellings
- The gazette notification, only if you really changed your name
Put the linking papers on top of the pile. A one and the same person affidavit explains a difference; it does not correct a certificate. The Commission decides whether it accepts it.
If You Really Changed Your Name After Madhyamik
If you changed your name by gazette after Class 10, your Madhyamik paper will never match your new name. Write to the Commission before applying and ask which name to use. Carry the gazette notification and an affidavit linking both names.
If you need a gazette and do not have one, our gazette name change guide explains the state and central routes. Avoid starting a name change in the middle of a WBCS round unless you must.
If your candidature is cancelled over a genuine name difference, that is a matter for a lawyer. Free legal aid is available through your District Legal Services Authority.
Mistakes That Hurt WBCS Candidates at Verification
Using the Aadhaar spelling
Aadhaar often differs from Madhyamik. The Madhyamik paper is the anchor.
Relying on a birth certificate for age
The Commission accepts age only as recorded in the Madhyamik or equivalent certificate.
Leaving the degree correction too late
University corrections can take months. Start before you apply.
Getting a second caste certificate
Correct the one you have at the office that issued it.
Getting a gazette for a spelling slip
A gazette is only for a real change of name.

WBCS Document Verification Name Mismatch: Frequently Asked Questions
Which name should I write on the WBCS form?
Your name exactly as your Madhyamik or equivalent certificate shows it, unless the advertisement says otherwise.
Which document is accepted as age proof for WBCS?
The advertisement says age as recorded only in the Madhyamik or equivalent certificate will be accepted.
Can I use my birth certificate if it shows a different date of birth?
No. The Commission goes by the Madhyamik record. Correct the Madhyamik record through the board if it is really wrong.
Can I correct my name in the WBCS edit window?
Read the Commission's edit window announcement for your round. We could not confirm which fields it allows.
My degree certificate spelling differs. What should I do?
Ask your college to take up the correction with the university, with your Madhyamik certificate, well before the personality test.
My caste certificate has a different spelling. What should I do?
Correct it at the office that issued it. Do not get a second certificate.
I am married. Which surname should I use?
Usually the Madhyamik name, with the marriage certificate carried to verification.
Will an affidavit solve a spelling mismatch?
It often helps as supporting proof, but the Commission decides. Correct real errors in certificates first.
Do I need a gazette for a small spelling difference?
No. A spelling, initials or order difference is not a change of name.
I am a serving employee. Does my service book name matter?
Yes. Keep it consistent with your WBCS form and certificates, following the state rules for any change.
I changed my name by gazette after Madhyamik. How do I apply?
Write to the Commission before applying, and carry the gazette and an affidavit linking both names.
Who can help if my candidature is cancelled over a name mismatch?
For a challenge, speak to a lawyer. Free legal aid is available through your District Legal Services Authority.
