UPSC Application Name Mismatch: Class 10 Name, or a Gazette
The UPSC application starts with your One Time Registration (OTR) profile, and its rule is strict: your name must be as per your Class 10 certificate. Name, date of birth and parents' names are reported as locked once the profile is submitted. If your name has changed since Madhyamik, UPSC asks for a gazette notification. This page shows what to type, when a gazette is needed, and which gazette route fits a West Bengal candidate.

UPSC Name Mismatch (Quick Answer)
In the UPSC OTR, enter your name exactly as your Class 10 (Madhyamik) certificate shows it. Name, date of birth and parents' names are reported as not editable after you submit. If you now use a different name, tick "changed name" and keep a gazette notification; reports of the UPSC notice say it can be uploaded after the Prelims result. A gazette costs about Rs 1,100 plus newspaper charges.

| Problem | Usual fix |
|---|---|
| Typing mistake in name in OTR | Reported as locked; write to UPSC with Class 10 proof |
| Name changed after Class 10 | Gazette notification, uploaded when UPSC asks |
| Married name differs from Class 10 | Gazette, unless the current notice accepts other proof |
| Initials or surname order differ | Type the Class 10 form; affidavit for other papers |
| Aadhaar spelling differs from Class 10 | Correct Aadhaar, or use another photo ID that matches |
How the UPSC One Time Registration (OTR) Profile Fixes Your Name
Every UPSC exam, from the Civil Services Examination to CDS, NDA, CAPF, ESE and EPFO posts, is applied for on upsconline.nic.in through a single One Time Registration (OTR) profile. Your name, date of birth and parents' names are entered there once and then carried into every application you make.
For CSE 2026, Testbook reports the notice came on 4 February 2026, applications closed on 27 February after an extension, a correction window ran from 28 February to 3 March 2026, and Prelims was held on 24 May 2026.
The fee is small: Rs 100 for Prelims and Rs 200 for Mains for General and OBC men, with women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates exempt. The cost of a name error is not the fee. It is a cancelled candidature at the document stage.
West Bengal sends a steady stream of candidates to the Civil Services and CAPF exams. Many also sit the state's WBCS, which has its own rules; see WBCS document verification name mismatch.
UPSC OTR Fields You Cannot Edit: Name, Date of Birth, Parents' Names
Careers360, reporting UPSC's changes to the online application in February 2025, listed the OTR fields that cannot be modified: name (as per Class X), date of birth, father's name, mother's name, mobile number and email. Mobile and email later got an OTP based change route, Testbook reports, but name, date of birth and parents' names stay fixed.
The same report listed what can be edited until final submission and in the correction window: "Have you ever changed name?", gender, minority status and the Class 10 roll number.
UPSC did open a one time chance to modify core OTR details once before. An AcademyCheck report on February 2025 says candidates could change name, date of birth, gender and parents' names between 12 and 18 February 2025, once in a lifetime. If you used that chance, it is gone. If you missed it, do not expect another; write to UPSC with proof if the error is serious.
Why Your Class 10 Certificate Decides Your UPSC Name
UPSC takes your name and date of birth from the matriculation (Class 10) certificate. For most West Bengal candidates that is the Madhyamik certificate from WBBSE; for others it is CBSE, ICSE or the High Madrasah certificate.
Type the name exactly as that certificate prints it: same spelling, same order, same initials. If Madhyamik says Md. Rafiqul Islam, do not type Mohammad Rafiqul Islam because your degree says so. See Md, Mohd and Sk spellings.
If the Class 10 certificate itself is wrong, that is a board correction, done through your school, and it corrects errors only. See marksheet and school certificate correction. Start early, because a board correction can take one to two months.
UPSC Changed Name Rule: When You Need a Gazette Notification
If the name you use today is different from your Class 10 name, the OTR asks "Have you ever changed name?". Answer yes and give the new name. According to the Careers360 report, UPSC then asks for a gazette notification to that effect, and a candidate who does not have it yet can upload it after the Civil Services (Prelims) result. Testbook's 2026 summary repeats that a name change needs a gazette notification.
So a real change of name, such as adding a surname, dropping one, a new first name, or a changed spelling you now use everywhere, needs a gazette before the Mains stage. Start it as soon as you apply, because the central gazette takes 30 to 45 days.
A gazette is supporting proof, not a correction. It does not rewrite your Class 10 certificate. UPSC reads the two together: old name on the certificate, new name on the gazette.
Kolkata Gazette or Gazette of India for UPSC?
The UPSC rule as reported says "gazette notification" and, in the sources we checked, does not say which gazette. Both routes are open to an adult living in West Bengal.
The Kolkata Gazette Part II is the state route. It is quicker, about 7 days, and done online at wbgazettepart2.in. The Gazette of India Part IV is the central route from the Department of Publication in Delhi. It takes 30 to 45 days and is recognised by every central body.
Our honest view: UPSC is a central body, and the central gazette leaves no room for doubt later, for example at service allocation or police verification. If time is short before a UPSC deadline, the state gazette is faster. If you are unsure, ask UPSC in writing before you choose, and keep the reply. See gazette name change in West Bengal for both routes side by side.

UPSC Name Mismatch for Married Women: Maiden Name on Class 10
A woman whose Class 10 certificate is in her maiden name and who now uses her married name is, in UPSC's terms, a candidate who has changed her name. The OTR should carry the Class 10 name, with the married name entered as the changed name.
The reports we checked name only a gazette notification as proof. We have not seen a published UPSC rule accepting a marriage certificate in its place for this purpose, so plan for a gazette, and check the notice of your exam year in case it says otherwise. See gazette name change after marriage.
If you would rather keep using your maiden name in UPSC papers, you need no gazette at all. Many candidates do this and change records after selection.
UPSC Photo ID and Aadhaar Name Mismatch
The application asks for a photo ID, and you must carry the same ID to the exam centre. PW Only IAS notes that Aadhaar is recommended but voter ID, PAN, passport and driving licence are also accepted.
Pick the ID whose name matches your OTR name. If Aadhaar spells your name differently from Class 10, use a passport or PAN that matches, or correct Aadhaar first. See name change in Aadhaar.
UPSC also takes a live photo at application and matches it with your uploaded photo. That checks your face, not your name, but it means you cannot fix a mismatch by uploading another person's document.
