WB Police Constable Recruitment Name Mismatch: Fix Your Records Before You Apply

You cleared the written test and the physical test. Then at document verification the officer sees one spelling on your Madhyamik admit card, another on your caste certificate and a third on the application. The WBPRB constable notice is clear: any mismatch between the application and your certificates, at any stage, can lead to summary rejection. This page shows which name to use, what to fix before the form, and what to carry on the day.

WB Police Constable Name Mismatch (Quick Answer)

For WB Police constable recruitment, the West Bengal Police Recruitment Board (WBPRB) takes your date of birth only from the Madhyamik or equivalent admit card or certificate, and its notice says any mismatch between the application and your certificates can lead to rejection at any stage. So fill the form with your name exactly as your Madhyamik paper shows it, and get your caste, OBC, EWS or domicile certificate corrected to the same name before you apply. Correcting a certificate at the issuing office is usually free, but it takes weeks.

The Rules

What the WBPRB Constable Notice Says About Name and Document Mismatch

The West Bengal Police Recruitment Board runs constable recruitment for West Bengal Police. Its 2024 constable notice, for 11,749 posts, sets out the document rules plainly. Read the notice for your own year too, because each recruitment has its own.

The notice says the date of birth is accepted only from the Madhyamik or equivalent admit card or certificate. Your signature must carry your full name and surname as you entered it in the form, and a signature that does not match the name can get the form rejected.

Most important, the notice says that if there is any mismatch of data between the application and your supporting certificates at any stage of recruitment, the candidature will be summarily rejected.

The notice does not say that an affidavit or a gazette will cure a mismatch. So do not count on explaining it on the day. The safe plan is to make sure there is no mismatch to explain by the time you apply.

Step One

Which Name to Use on the WB Police Constable Application Form

Use the name exactly as your Madhyamik or equivalent admit card or certificate shows it. Letter by letter, with the same spaces and the same order. If it says Md Rahim Sk, write Md Rahim Sk, not Mohammad Rahim Sheikh. If it says Sunita Marmu, write Marmu.

This feels strange when your Aadhaar or caste certificate uses a better spelling. But the board ties your age and identity to the Madhyamik paper, and a form that matches it is the hardest to question. Then bring your other certificates in line with that name, not the other way round.

Why not correct the Madhyamik paper instead? Because the board corrects only errors against the school admission register, through the school, and it takes weeks to months. Our marksheet correction guide explains when it is possible.

Watch For These

Common Name Mismatches in West Bengal Police Recruitment

  • Short forms: Md on the Madhyamik paper, Mohammad on the caste certificate. See our guide to Md, Mohd and Sk name spellings.
  • Surname spellings: Chettri and Chhetri, Marmu and Murmu, Biswas and Bishwas.
  • Missing middle names: Kumar, Chandra, Bahadur or Kumari on one paper and not on another.
  • Order: surname first on one document and last on another.
  • Father's name: written differently on the caste certificate and the Madhyamik paper.
  • Women's surnames: maiden name on school papers, married name on newer documents.

Each of these looks small, but the notice treats any mismatch as a reason to reject. Find them now, not on verification day.

Reserved Categories

Caste, OBC and EWS Certificate Name Mismatch for WB Police Recruitment

If you apply as SC, ST or OBC, the notice asks for a certificate from the competent authority at verification. SC and ST candidates who cannot produce it lose the claim. OBC candidates need a certificate revalidated, renewed or fresh within one year before the cut-off date set in the notice. EWS candidates need an Income and Asset Certificate issued in West Bengal.

So your category certificate is not just a paper you show once. It must match your Madhyamik name, and for OBC it must be recent. If the name is wrong, get it corrected at the SDO office that issued it. Do not apply for a fresh certificate in a different spelling: that leaves two genuine certificates in two names.

Our guides on caste certificate name correction, OBC certificate name correction and EWS certificate name correction have the steps.

Hill Candidates

Domicile Certificate for Darjeeling and Kalimpong Hill Candidates

The 2024 notice asks shortlisted candidates from the hill subdivisions of Darjeeling and Kalimpong to produce a domicile certificate at document verification. The question paper is set in Bengali and Nepali, and hill candidates are tested for Nepali in place of Bengali.

Hill candidates often have Nepali names spelt differently across papers, such as Chhetri and Chettri. Make sure your domicile certificate carries the same name as your Madhyamik paper. Our pages on Nepali name spellings and domicile certificate correction explain the fix.

Your Only Chance

The WBPRB Application Editing Window for Name Corrections

In 2024, WBPRB gave a 7-day editing window after the application period. Permanent state, mobile number and email could not be changed even then. After the window closed, the notice said requests to change personal details would not be entertained.

So if you typed your name wrongly, the editing window is your only chance. Check your filled form against your Madhyamik paper the day you submit, and again when the window opens. Keep a printout of the final form.

⚠

Signature in block letters

The notice rejects signatures in block letters, unintelligible signatures, and signatures that do not match the name. Sign with your full name and surname, the same way every time.

On the Day

What to Carry to WB Police Constable Document Verification

Shortlisted candidates must bring all relevant original certificates with self-attested photocopies. Failing that, the candidature is rejected. Check your call letter for the exact list, but expect:

  • Madhyamik or equivalent admit card and certificate (age proof)
  • Educational qualification certificates and marksheets
  • Caste, OBC or EWS certificate, if you claimed a category
  • Domicile certificate, for hill subdivision candidates
  • Any other certificate the call letter names
  • If a name differs on any of these, a one and the same person affidavit and, where your name really changed, the gazette notification

The affidavit and gazette are supporting proof. The notice does not promise they will be accepted, so treat them as a backup, not a plan.

Real Name Change

If You Changed Your Name After Madhyamik

Some candidates have really changed their name since Class 10, for example after marriage or by gazette. Their Madhyamik paper shows the old name, and Aadhaar and newer papers show the new one.

In that case, the form and the Madhyamik paper will never match fully. Read the notice for your year carefully and, before you apply, write to WBPRB asking how to fill the name and what to bring. Carry the gazette notification, your marriage certificate if it applies, and an affidavit linking both names. Our gazette name change guide explains the state and central routes.

If the board rejects your candidature over a genuine name change, that is a question for a lawyer, not for us. Free legal aid is available through your District Legal Services Authority.
