WBPSC Clerkship Name Mismatch (Quick Answer)
For WBPSC Clerkship, write your name, father's name and date of birth exactly as your Madhyamik admit card or certificate shows them, because Madhyamik is both the basic qualification and the usual age proof. Before you apply, make your caste, OBC or EWS certificate carry the same name; corrections at the issuing office are usually free but take weeks. At verification, carry every original plus a marriage certificate or a one and the same person affidavit for any difference. Always follow the advertisement for your year on psc.wb.gov.in.
| Mismatch | Usual fix |
|---|---|
| Form name differs from Madhyamik | Avoid it: copy the form name from Madhyamik |
| Caste or OBC certificate spelling differs | Correct it at the SDO office that issued it |
| Married surname on newer papers | Carry the marriage certificate |
| Initials, short forms or spelling | One and the same person affidavit |
| A real change of name since Madhyamik | Gazette notification, plus the affidavit |
About the WBPSC Clerkship Examination and Its Documents
The Public Service Commission, West Bengal (WBPSC) holds the Clerkship examination for clerical posts in state government offices. The basic qualification is a pass in Madhyamik or an equivalent Class 10 examination, with basic computer knowledge and a typing speed set in the advertisement.
The selection has three stages: a Part I objective test, a Part II conventional test, and a basic computer test, followed by a merit list. The age limit in recent rounds was 18 to 40, with relaxation for reserved categories.
Every recruiting body in West Bengal checks your form against your certificates before appointment. For a Madhyamik-level post, your Madhyamik admit card or certificate is usually the document for both age and identity, so it becomes the anchor for your name.
Each round has its own advertisement. Read it fully on psc.wb.gov.in, especially the parts on age proof, documents and correction of particulars, because the rules can change from year to year.
Which Name to Use on the WBPSC Clerkship Application Form
Copy your name, father's name and date of birth from your Madhyamik admit card or certificate, letter by letter, in the same order. Do not copy from Aadhaar or a newer document if it spells your name differently.
If your Madhyamik paper says Md Rahim Sk, write that, even if your Aadhaar says Mohammad Rahim Sheikh. If it says S. K. Das with initials, write it as the certificate shows it. Then line up your other papers with that name, or carry proof that links them. Our pages on Md, Mohd and Sk spellings and name order mismatch explain the common cases.
Check the form twice before final submission and payment. Correction after submission is limited or not allowed, depending on the advertisement for your year.
Common Name Mismatches in WBPSC Clerkship Documents
- Spelling: Biswas and Bishwas, Chettri and Chhetri, Marmu and Murmu.
- Initials: S. K. Das on one paper, Sanjay Kumar Das on another.
- Order: surname first on one paper and last on another.
- Middle names: Kumar, Chandra, Bahadur or Kumari missing on one paper.
- Father's name: written differently on the caste certificate and the Madhyamik paper.
- Married surname: maiden name on Madhyamik, married name on Aadhaar.
None of these is a change of name. Most are explained by a one and the same person affidavit, but it is far safer to correct a wrong certificate before you apply than to explain it at verification.
Caste, OBC and EWS Certificate Name Mismatch for WBPSC
If you apply as SC, ST, OBC or EWS, your certificate must carry the same name and father's name as your Madhyamik paper. A different spelling is one of the most common reasons a category claim is questioned at verification.
If the certificate is wrong, get it corrected at the SDO office that issued it. Do not apply for a fresh one in a different spelling; that leaves two genuine certificates in two names. An EWS certificate is valid for one financial year, so check its date too.
Our guides on caste certificate correction, OBC certificate correction and EWS certificate correction have the steps.
Married Women and Surname Change in WBPSC Clerkship
If your Madhyamik paper has your maiden name and your newer documents have your married name, apply in the Madhyamik name unless the advertisement says otherwise, and carry your marriage certificate to verification. It links both names.
You do not need a gazette just because you took your husband's surname. If your marriage certificate has a mistake, fix it first. Our page on marriage certificate correction explains how.
What to Carry to WBPSC Clerkship Document Verification
Your call letter lists the exact documents. Expect to need originals with self-attested copies of:
- Madhyamik admit card and certificate
- Any other qualification you mentioned in the form
- Caste, OBC or EWS certificate, if claimed
- Computer or typing proof, if the advertisement asks for it
- Marriage certificate, if your surname changed by marriage
- A one and the same person affidavit, if your papers show different spellings
- The gazette notification, only if you really changed your name
Put the linking documents on top of the pile. It makes your case easy to follow.
If You Really Changed Your Name After Madhyamik
If you changed your name by gazette after Class 10, your Madhyamik paper will never match your new name. Before applying, write to WBPSC and ask which name to use and what to bring. Carry the gazette notification and an affidavit linking both names.
If you have not yet done the gazette and need one, our gazette name change guide explains the state and central routes. Do not start a name change in the middle of a recruitment unless you must, because it adds one more version of your name to explain.
If your candidature is cancelled over a genuine name change, that is a matter for a lawyer. Free legal aid is available through your District Legal Services Authority.
After Joining: Your Name in the Service Book
Once you join as a clerk, your name goes into your service book. That record decides your pay, promotion and pension papers, so make sure it carries the name you will keep.
A later name change follows the West Bengal Finance Department rules. A woman taking her husband's surname, or going back to her maiden name, usually needs only an intimation; any other change needs a deed, a newspaper notice and a gazette. Our page on name change for state government employees explains the rules.

WBPSC Clerkship Name Mismatch: Frequently Asked Questions
Which name should I write on the WBPSC Clerkship form?
Your name exactly as your Madhyamik admit card or certificate shows it, unless the advertisement for your year says otherwise.
Which document is the age proof for WBPSC Clerkship?
Usually the Madhyamik admit card or certificate. Check the advertisement for your year on psc.wb.gov.in.
Can I correct my name after submitting the form?
Correction after submission is limited or not allowed, depending on the advertisement. Check every field before you pay and submit.
My caste certificate has a different spelling. What should I do?
Get it corrected at the SDO office that issued it, to match your Madhyamik name, before you apply. Do not get a second certificate.
I am married. Which surname should I use?
Usually the Madhyamik name, with the marriage certificate carried to verification to link both names. Follow the advertisement if it says otherwise.
Will an affidavit solve a spelling mismatch at verification?
It often helps as supporting proof, but the Commission decides. Correct real errors in certificates before you apply.
Do I need a gazette for a small spelling difference?
No. A spelling, initials or order difference is not a change of name. A gazette is only for a real change of name.
Can I correct my Madhyamik certificate to match Aadhaar?
Only if it has a real error against the school admission register, and only through the school. A chosen new spelling is generally not corrected.
Is correcting a caste or EWS certificate expensive?
Usually not. Corrections at the issuing office are normally free. The real cost is time, so start early.
How long is an EWS certificate valid?
One financial year. Check that it is valid for the recruitment year the advertisement asks for.
I changed my name by gazette after Madhyamik. How do I apply?
Write to WBPSC before applying and ask which name to use. Carry the gazette and an affidavit linking both names.
Who can help if my candidature is cancelled over a name mismatch?
For a challenge, speak to a lawyer. Free legal aid is available through your District Legal Services Authority.
