Jan Dhan Account Name Mismatch in West Bengal
Many Jan Dhan accounts in West Bengal were opened in a hurry, at a camp or by a bank mitra, with whatever spelling the form-filler chose. Ten years on, these zero-balance accounts carry Lakshmir Bhandar, Krishak Bandhu, pensions and other government payments, and those payments check the account name against Aadhaar. A spelling slip that did not matter in 2014 can now stop a monthly payment. This page shows how to bring a Jan Dhan account in line, why re-KYC is the moment to do it, and what it means for the free accident cover.

How to Fix a Jan Dhan Account Name Mismatch (Quick Answer)
Take your Aadhaar to the branch, or to the bank mitra or panchayat camp if your bank runs one, and ask for re-KYC with a name correction, so the account name matches Aadhaar. Ask them to check the Aadhaar seeding too, because government payments are routed by Aadhaar. Check the nominee name for the RuPay accident cover at the same time. The update is free.
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| Account spelling differs from Aadhaar | Re-KYC with Aadhaar; ask for name correction |
| Scheme payment failing for name | Correct the account, check Aadhaar seeding |
| Small account (chota khata) never upgraded | Complete full KYC with Aadhaar |
| Nominee name spelt wrong | Update the nomination at the branch |
| Account inactive for years | Reactivate with re-KYC before correcting |
Why Jan Dhan Account Names Go Wrong
Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana accounts were opened in very large numbers from 2014, often at camps, by bank mitras, or with only a voter card. A government fact sheet of August 2024 put the national total at over 53 crore accounts.
In that rush, names were typed from handwritten forms, Bengali names were transliterated however the operator thought best, and women's accounts were sometimes opened in a maiden name or with the husband's name as a surname by guess.
Many of these accounts are perfectly valid. They simply carry a name that is not quite the one on the holder's Aadhaar.
Why a Jan Dhan Name Mismatch Stops Government Payments
Jan Dhan accounts are where most state and central benefits land: Lakshmir Bhandar, Krishak Bandhu, old age and widow pensions, scholarships and more. These payments usually travel by Aadhaar-based transfer, which routes money to the account linked to your Aadhaar.
Schemes also check names. When the account name, the Aadhaar name and the scheme record differ, payments can be held back or rejected. See Lakshmir Bhandar name mismatch and Krishak Bandhu and PM-Kisan name mismatch.
So the fix is to make the account name match Aadhaar, and make sure the Aadhaar is linked to this account for receiving payments.
Re-KYC for Jan Dhan Accounts After Ten Years
Because the scheme completed ten years, many accounts became due for re-KYC. RBI's Governor said in 2025 that banks were running camps at gram panchayat level from 1 July to 30 September 2025 for re-KYC, new accounts, micro-insurance and pension schemes.
The camp window has closed, but re-KYC is still done at any branch. If your account has not been re-verified, you may find transactions restricted until it is.
Re-KYC is the right moment to correct the name. You are already showing Aadhaar; ask the bank to record the name as it appears there.
How to Correct the Name on a Jan Dhan Account
Go to your home branch, or the bank mitra point if your bank allows corrections there, with your Aadhaar and, if you have one, PAN. Ask for re-KYC and a name correction to match Aadhaar.
If Aadhaar itself is wrong, correct it first at a Seva Kendra; see Aadhaar name change in West Bengal. Aadhaar allows a name change only twice in a lifetime.
After the correction, ask the branch to confirm your Aadhaar is linked to this account for receiving government payments. For general bank name rules, see name correction in bank account.
Small Accounts (Chota Khata) Opened Without Documents
Some Jan Dhan accounts were opened as small accounts without officially valid documents. A government fact sheet describes them as valid for 12 months at first, extendable by 12 months more if the holder shows proof of having applied for an official document.
If yours is still a small account, the name is whatever was written on the form. Completing full KYC with Aadhaar both regularises the account and fixes the name.
Do this soon; small accounts have limits and can be restricted if not converted.
RuPay Accident Cover and the Nominee Name
A Jan Dhan account comes with a free RuPay debit card carrying accident insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh, or Rs 1 lakh for accounts opened before 28 August 2018, according to the government's fact sheet. The overdraft facility goes up to Rs 10,000 for eligible holders.
An accident claim is made by the nominee. If the holder's name differs across the account, Aadhaar and death certificate, or the nominee's name is misspelt, the claim slows down. Check and update the nominee at the branch while the holder is alive.
