UPI Name Mismatch With Bank Account in West Bengal
Since 30 June 2025 every UPI app has to show the name of the person you are paying exactly as their bank holds it, not a nickname or a shop name. That was done to stop fraud, but it has a side effect. If your bank account still carries your maiden name, an old spelling or just initials, that is the name everyone sees when they pay you, and some people stop before paying because it does not look like you. This page explains where the UPI name comes from, why changing it in the app does nothing, and how to fix it at the bank.

Why Does UPI Show the Wrong Name, and How Do I Fix It? (Quick Answer)
UPI shows the name from your bank's core banking system. Since 30 June 2025 apps must display that name, so editing your app profile does not change what payers see. To fix it, update your name at the bank branch with Aadhaar and PAN. Once the bank record changes, UPI shows the new name, sometimes after you re-link the account in the app. The update is free.
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Payers see your maiden name | Update the bank account name after Aadhaar and PAN |
| Payers see initials or a short name | Ask the branch to record your full name |
| Spelling on UPI differs from Aadhaar | Correct the bank KYC to match Aadhaar |
| Bank updated, UPI still shows old name | Remove and re-link the account in the app |
| Shop QR shows your personal old name | Update the bank account behind the QR |
Where Your UPI Name Comes From
Your UPI ID is linked to a bank account. When someone enters your UPI ID, number or scans your QR, their app asks your bank who owns that account, and the bank answers from its core banking system (CBS), the same record your passbook prints from.
So the UPI name is not something you type. It is your bank account name, exactly as your branch entered it, perhaps years ago.
If that record says "MITA DEY" from before your marriage, or "S K GHOSH" from an old passbook, that is the name payers see.
The 30 June 2025 Rule: Only the Bank Name Is Shown
From 30 June 2025 the National Payments Corporation of India required UPI apps to show only the name retrieved from the bank's core banking system before a payment is confirmed, for both person-to-person and person-to-merchant payments. Nicknames, QR labels and custom display names no longer appear.
The aim is to stop people paying a fraudster who names himself after someone else. It works well, but it also means an outdated bank name is now visible to everyone who pays you.
For anyone who receives payments from customers, tenants or students, an odd-looking name can cost money.
Why Changing Your Name in the UPI App Does Not Help
Most UPI apps let you edit a profile name. That is your own display inside the app. It is not what the payer's app shows when it looks up your account; that comes from your bank.
Making a new UPI ID does not help either. Every UPI ID linked to the same account shows the same bank name.
The only fix is at the source: the bank account record.
Fixing the Name at Your Bank Branch
Decide the correct name, usually as on Aadhaar and PAN. If either of those is wrong, fix it first; see PAN and Aadhaar name mismatch.
Then visit your branch with Aadhaar and PAN and ask for a name update in your KYC. Indian banks do this at the branch, often with a fresh signature. See name correction in bank account, or after marriage bank account name change after marriage.
Ask the branch to update your central KYC record too, so new accounts do not copy the old name; see CKYC and KIN name mismatch.
After the Bank Update: Checking UPI
Once the bank record changes, UPI lookups return the new name. Ask a family member to start a payment to your UPI ID and stop at the confirmation screen, to see what name appears.
If the old name still shows after a few days, remove the bank account from your UPI app and link it again. That makes the app fetch fresh details.
Your UPI ID and linked mobile number do not need to change.
Small Shops and QR Codes Showing a Personal Name
Many small shops in West Bengal take payments into the owner's personal savings account. Since June 2025 customers see the owner's bank name, not the shop name. If that name is an old spelling or an initial, customers hesitate.
Updating the personal account name fixes what customers see. To show the shop name, the account behind the QR has to be in the business's name, such as a current account; see Udyam and GST registration name change.
Do not print the shop name on a QR that pays a personal account and expect it to show. It will not.
