CKYC and KIN Name Mismatch in West Bengal
Your Central KYC record, held by CERSAI and identified by a 14-digit KYC Identifier Number (KIN), is the copy of your identity that banks, insurers and fund houses pull instead of asking you for documents again. If that record still carries your maiden name, an old spelling or an old address, every new account or policy opened with it will copy the mistake. This page explains what CKYC is, how a name in it is updated, how it differs from the mutual fund KRA record, and why updating it once now spreads to every linked institution.

How to Update Your Name in CKYC (Quick Answer)
You cannot edit CKYC yourself. Update your name with any regulated entity you deal with, usually your bank, by giving Aadhaar and PAN in the new name. Under RBI's KYC directions, the entity must update the Central KYC Registry within 7 days, and the registry then informs every other entity linked to your KIN. Fix Aadhaar and PAN first. Mutual fund KYC also sits with a KRA, updated separately.
| Record | How the name is updated |
|---|---|
| Central KYC (CKYC, KIN) | Through any bank, insurer or fund house that uploads to CERSAI |
| Mutual fund KYC (KRA) | Through your fund house, registrar or a KRA modification |
| Each bank account | At the branch, with Aadhaar and PAN |
| Insurance policy | With the insurer |
| Aadhaar and PAN | First, at UIDAI and the PAN service |
What CKYC and the KIN Are
The Central KYC Records Registry (CKYCR) is run by CERSAI. When you complete KYC with a bank, insurer, fund house or other regulated entity, it uploads your details there, and you get a 14-digit KYC Identifier Number (KIN), often called the CKYC number.
The next time you open an account elsewhere, that institution can fetch your record from the registry using the KIN instead of asking you for documents again.
That convenience is also the risk. Whatever name the registry holds is the name the next institution copies.
Why a CKYC Name Mismatch Spreads to New Accounts
RBI's amendment of 7 November 2024 to its Master Direction on KYC tells regulated entities to retrieve existing KYC records from the registry rather than ask customers for fresh documents, except where records are incomplete, documents have expired, or more checks are needed.
So if the CKYC record has your maiden name, a new insurer or bank fetching it will open your policy or account in the maiden name, even if your Aadhaar and PAN now say otherwise. The mismatch then shows up later, at a claim or a payout.
Updating CKYC once, correctly, stops the problem at its source.
How to Find Your CKYC Number
Many people received their KIN by SMS or email from CERSAI when an institution first uploaded their KYC. Search your messages for CKYC or CERSAI.
You can also ask your bank, which can see the KIN linked to your record, or use the CKYC card service on the registry's public site with OTP verification.
Once you have it, check the name, date of birth and address on the record. That tells you whether an update is needed at all.
Updating the Name in Your CKYC Record
Individuals cannot edit the registry directly. Go to any regulated entity you already deal with, usually your bank, with Aadhaar and PAN in the correct name, and ask them to update your KYC and the CKYC record.
Under the November 2024 amendment, the entity must update the registry within seven days, or the period the Central Government notifies. The registry then electronically informs every other entity that has dealt with you about the update.
Each of those entities then refreshes its own record. Some may still ask you to confirm. For the bank side, see name correction in bank account.
Mutual Fund KYC (KRA) Is a Separate Record
Mutual fund and stock market KYC is held by SEBI-registered KYC Registration Agencies (KRAs), not only by CKYC. Your KRA status may read registered, validated or on hold.
A name change in CKYC does not automatically change the KRA record. Update it through your fund house, registrar or a KRA modification with Aadhaar and PAN in the new name. For folios themselves, see mutual fund folio name change.
If your KRA status is on hold because the name does not match PAN, fix PAN or the KRA record first, or new investments may be blocked.
CKYC Name After Marriage
After a surname change, update Aadhaar and PAN, then ask your bank to update KYC and CKYC. Every institution linked to your KIN is then informed.
Old policies and accounts keep their history; the KYC name is what changes. Insurers may still ask for a marriage certificate or affidavit at claim time, so keep one ready; see one and the same person affidavit.
For insurance policies, see LIC and insurance policy name change.
