CIBIL Credit Report Name Mismatch in West Bengal
Your credit report is built from what every bank, NBFC and card company reports about you, and each of them may hold a different form of your name. A maiden name on an old credit card, a short name on a two-wheeler loan, a misspelt surname on a gold loan: all of it lands on one report under your PAN. Usually that causes no harm. Sometimes it splits your history into two files, or merges someone else's loan into yours. This page explains how to read the names on your report, who corrects them, and the RBI timelines that protect you.

How to Fix a Name Mismatch on Your CIBIL Report (Quick Answer)
Correct your PAN first, because credit reports are matched mainly by PAN. Then update your name with each lender, since the bureau only shows what lenders report. If a name, address or loan on the report is wrong, raise a dispute with the bureau or the lender. Under RBI rules the complaint must be resolved within 30 days, or you get Rs 100 a day compensation. Old names in the history are normal.
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Old or maiden name in the name list | Usually harmless; update active accounts with lenders |
| Two reports, one in each name | Update PAN with lenders; dispute so files are merged |
| Someone else's loan on your report | Dispute with the bureau at once |
| Wrong spelling on an active loan | Ask the lender to correct and report again |
| Loan rejected over name mismatch | Match PAN, Aadhaar and bank names first |
How Your CIBIL Credit Report Is Built
India has four credit information companies (CICs): TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. Every bank, NBFC, card issuer and many fintech lenders send them your loan and card data, now at least every fortnight under RBI's directions.
Each lender sends your name, date of birth, PAN, address and phone exactly as it holds them. The bureau matches the records to one person, mainly through PAN, and builds your report.
So the bureau does not decide your name. It shows the names your lenders gave it. That tells you who corrects what.
Why Your Credit Report Shows Several Names
A report that lists "Rina Dey", "Rina Das" and "R. Das" is common. Each comes from a different lender, opened at a different time. A credit card from before marriage keeps the maiden name. A loan from a small NBFC may have a short name.
This is not an error and does not by itself lower your score. Lenders reading the report see one PAN and one history.
It becomes a problem only when the names are so different that the bureau cannot match them, or when it wrongly matches someone else to you.
When a Name Mismatch on Your Credit Report Causes Trouble
Split files. If an old loan was reported without PAN, or with a very different name, it may sit in a separate file. Your good repayment history then does not count, and a new lender sees a thin report.
Merged files. Someone with a similar name and date of birth in the same area can have their loan shown on your report. Common Bengali names make this more likely. A default you never took can block your loan.
Loan rejection. A new lender's system may reject an application where the PAN name, Aadhaar name and bank name do not match, even if the report is clean; see PAN and Aadhaar name mismatch.
Correct PAN First, Then Each Lender
Because reports are matched mainly by PAN, the PAN name is the anchor. If PAN has an old or wrong name, correct it first; a PAN correction keeps the same number. See name correction in PAN card.
Then update your name with each lender where you have an active account: savings bank, credit card, loan. Each lender updates its record and reports the new name in its next submission; see name correction in bank account.
Closed loans keep the name they had. You do not need to reopen them. The history stays linked through PAN.
How to Raise a Dispute With CIBIL or Another Bureau
Each bureau has an online dispute form where you can challenge personal details, such as name, date of birth and address, or an account that is not yours. Log in, choose the item, explain, and upload proof such as PAN and Aadhaar.
The bureau sends the dispute to the lender that reported the data. Only that lender can confirm and correct it. You can also complain directly to the lender, which is often faster for its own data.
Get your free report from each bureau before you start. You may find the mismatch on one bureau and not the others.
RBI Timelines and Rs 100 a Day Compensation
RBI's circular RBI/2023-24/72 of 26 October 2023, in force from April 2024, gives a 30-day limit for resolving a credit information complaint: 21 days for the lender to send corrected data, and the remaining 9 days for the bureau.
If the complaint is not resolved in 30 calendar days, you are entitled to Rs 100 per calendar day of delay, paid by whichever party caused it. If compensation is wrongly refused, you can go to the RBI Ombudsman under the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021.
The framework does not cover disputes about how the score itself is calculated. It covers wrong or outdated data, which includes your personal details.
Credit Report Name After Marriage
If you changed your surname after marriage, update PAN and Aadhaar first, then each lender. New accounts will carry the new name; old ones keep the old name in history. That is normal.
When applying for a home loan or car loan in the new name, give the lender your marriage certificate or a one and the same person affidavit, so their credit check is read correctly; see one and the same person affidavit.
