CBSE and ICSE Marksheet Name Correction in West Bengal
Thousands of students in Kolkata, Siliguri, Durgapur and Asansol study in CBSE or CISCE (ICSE and ISC) schools rather than under WBBSE and WBCHSE. When the name on their Class 10 or Class 12 marksheet is wrong, the state board's rules do not apply, and neither does a visit to Salt Lake. The correction goes through the school to a board office outside the state. This page explains how CBSE and CISCE treat a correction versus a change of name, what the Supreme Court said about CBSE certificates in 2021, which documents the school will ask for, and what to fix before WBJEE, CUET or college admission.

How to Correct a Name in a CBSE or ICSE Marksheet in West Bengal (Quick Answer)
Apply through your school principal, not to the board directly. If the marksheet differs from the school admission register, it is a correction: the school sends the admission form, register extract and your request to the board. If you want a different name from what the school recorded, it is a change of name, and boards ask for a gazette notification. CBSE schools in West Bengal fall under the board's Bhubaneswar regional office.
| Problem | Route |
|---|---|
| Marksheet differs from school register | Correction through the school |
| School register itself is wrong | Fix the school record first, with proof |
| You want a new name or surname | Change of name, with gazette |
| Parent's name wrong on marksheet | Correction through the school, with parent's ID |
| Name differs only from Aadhaar | Often fix Aadhaar, not the marksheet |
CBSE and CISCE Schools in West Bengal: Who Corrects the Marksheet
Your board decides the office, not your address. A Madhyamik or HS marksheet is corrected by WBBSE or WBCHSE; see WBBSE and WBCHSE marksheet name correction. A CBSE marksheet is corrected by the Central Board of Secondary Education, and an ICSE or ISC marksheet by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE).
The CBSE jurisdiction list places West Bengal under the board's regional office at Bhubaneswar. CISCE works from its head office in New Delhi. Neither has a counter in Kolkata where a parent can walk in with a request.
Both boards deal with schools, not with students. Your first and most important step is a written request to your school principal, who forwards it with the school's own records.
Correction or Change of Name in a CBSE or ICSE Marksheet
Boards treat these as two different requests. A correction means the marksheet does not match what the school recorded at admission: "Sourav" in the admission register, "Saurav" on the marksheet. The board fixes its error to match the school record.
A change of name means you want a name different from what the school recorded: a new first name, a different surname, or dropping a name. Here the board needs proof that your name has legally changed, usually a gazette notification, before it issues a document in the new name.
Check the admission register before anything else. If the register itself is wrong, the school must first correct it on proof such as your birth certificate. See school leaving certificate name correction.
How CBSE Name Correction Works for West Bengal Students
Write to the principal of the school from which you appeared, giving your roll number, year and the name as printed and as it should read. Attach a copy of the marksheet and certificate, your birth certificate, and your ID.
The school verifies its records and sends the request to CBSE with the admission form filled by your parents, the school leaving certificate from the previous school if any, and the relevant extract of the admission and withdrawal register. These are the documents the Supreme Court listed in 2021. The school uses the board's online systems to submit and track it.
CBSE charges a fee for corrected documents. Ask the school for the current amount and time limits, which the board sets in its examination bye-laws and circulars, and apply as soon as you notice the mistake.
Jigya Yadav v. CBSE (2021): What the Supreme Court Said About Name Changes
On 3 June 2021, in Jigya Yadav v. CBSE, the Supreme Court looked at CBSE's bye-law on corrections, which had been very restrictive. It drew a clear line between a correction and a change.
For a correction, CBSE must allow the entry to be made consistent with the school record, on the documents the school holds. For a change of name, CBSE can ask for proof such as a gazette notification and the return of the original certificate, and the new certificate carries a note against the original entry showing when and on what basis it was changed.
The court directed CBSE to amend its bye-laws accordingly. For you, it means a change of name after Class 10 or 12 is possible, but it is a formal process, and the old name stays visible as history on the new document.
ICSE and ISC Certificate Name Correction Through the School
CISCE also does not correspond with students or parents directly. Your school's principal applies on your behalf with a covering letter explaining the error.
Schools commonly ask for an attested copy of the corrected school admission form, your birth certificate, an affidavit in English sworn before a First Class Magistrate, the original statement of marks and pass certificate, and a newspaper notice of the correct name. The fee is paid online through the school.
Requirements change from time to time, so take the exact list from your school, which receives CISCE's circulars. If you need a duplicate as well, CISCE takes duplicate requests online through its services section.
Marksheet or Aadhaar: Which Name Should You Fix?
Do not correct a marksheet just because Aadhaar spells your name differently. If the marksheet matches your birth certificate and school record, it is the Aadhaar that is wrong. Fixing Aadhaar is quicker; see Aadhaar Bengali and English name mismatch.
Bengali names are where this happens most: Subhojit, Shubhajit and Subhajit are all common. Pick the spelling on your Class 10 certificate as your master spelling, unless it is plainly wrong, because every later record is checked against it.
For a minor, passports are also issued against the Class 10 record once it exists; see passport name change for a minor.
Fix the Name Before WBJEE, CUET and College Admission
Entrance exams copy your name from the board certificate. If it is wrong, the admit card, rank card and allotment letter all carry the wrong name. See WBJEE application name correction and CUET application name mismatch.
West Bengal universities issue registration in the name on your Class 12 marksheet. Correcting it later means correcting your university registration and migration too; see migration certificate name correction.
If the board correction is still pending at admission time, carry the school's letter confirming the request, plus an affidavit linking the names. Most admission offices will accept these provisionally.
