Migration Certificate Name Correction in West Bengal
A migration certificate is the paper that lets you leave a West Bengal board or university and join another one. It is printed from the name in your registration record, so you cannot correct the migration certificate on its own. If the name is wrong, the registration and marksheet are corrected first, and a fresh migration certificate is issued from the corrected record. This page shows that order for the Higher Secondary Council, the Madhyamik board and the University of Calcutta, and what to do when the new college sees a different name.

How to Correct the Name on a Migration Certificate in West Bengal (Quick Answer)
A migration certificate copies the name in your registration record. So first get the registration, marksheet and pass certificate corrected by the body that issued them: WBCHSE or WBBSE through your school, or your university through your college. Then apply for a migration certificate in the corrected name. If the error was only on the migration certificate itself, ask the same office to reissue it. A chosen new name is not a correction; link it with an affidavit.
| Your problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| Name wrong on registration and marksheet too | Correct the board or university record first, then get the migration certificate |
| Record is right, only the migration certificate is wrong | Ask the issuing office to reissue it |
| Migration not yet applied, record has a spelling error | Fix the record before you apply |
| You changed your name after passing | Boards correct errors only; use an affidavit and, if asked, a gazette |
| New college says names do not match | Give a one and the same person affidavit with the documents |
What a Migration Certificate Is and Who Issues It in West Bengal
A migration certificate says that the board or university that registered you has no objection to you joining another one. It is asked for when you move from one board or university to another, for example from the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education to a university outside the state, or from the University of Calcutta to another university for a master's degree.
In West Bengal it is issued by the body that holds your registration: the Higher Secondary Council (WBCHSE) after Class 12, the Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) after Madhyamik, or your university after a degree. It is not issued by your school or college, though they usually forward the application.
Students who stay within the same university, or who join a West Bengal university after the Higher Secondary, are often not asked for one. Check with the college you are joining before you apply.
Why You Cannot Correct a Migration Certificate on Its Own
The migration certificate is printed from your registration record. The office does not type a name you give it; it copies the name it already holds. If that name is wrong, a new migration certificate will be wrong in exactly the same way.
So the correction always starts one step back. The registration certificate, admit card, marksheet and pass certificate carry the same name from the same record. Correct that record, and every document printed after it, the migration certificate included, will show the corrected name.
The only case where you go straight to the migration office is when your record is right and the migration certificate alone was printed wrong. Then it is a reissue, not a correction of your record.
WBCHSE: Correct the HS Record, Then Apply for Migration
The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education, Vidyasagar Bhawan, Salt Lake, Kolkata 700091, corrects names in the registration, admit card, marksheet and certificate. The application goes through your school, which checks it against the admission register before forwarding it.
Since 1 September 2023 the Council has run an online student portal for duplicate registration, admit card, marksheet and certificate, migration and transcript, according to a widely used student guide. Use the portal or your school, whichever the Council directs for your year.
Correct the record first. Then apply for the migration certificate, so that it is printed in the corrected name. For the marksheet side of this, see name correction in marksheet and school certificate.
WBBSE: Madhyamik Name Correction Comes Before Migration
For Madhyamik records, the board's correction form is Form WBBSE/02. It is submitted through the head of your school, not directly, and lists attested copies of the registration certificate, admit card, marksheet and pass certificate, the birth registration certificate, and the relevant pages of the school admission register. The form lists a fee of Rs 1,000 per application.
The board does not entertain correction requests from external candidates through this form, and it corrects errors: a spelling that differs from the admission register. A spelling you now prefer is not an error.
Because the Madhyamik certificate is often the first record of your name, fix it before Class 12 registration where you can, so the Higher Secondary record and every migration certificate after it carry the same spelling.
University of Calcutta Migration Certificate and Name Correction
For the University of Calcutta, a college notice of June 2025 sets out the process: download and fill the migration form, submit it to the college office with photocopies of the final semester marksheet and the university registration certificate, pay Rs 205 online through SBI Collect under Calcutta University, Payment for Misc Fees, and take the forwarded package to the university's migration department in the Centenary Building.
The same notice says the college forwards it within two working days, and after that follow-ups are with the university, not the college.
If your name is wrong on the university registration certificate, the migration certificate will copy it. Get the registration corrected by the university first; for the degree side see name correction in degree certificate.
Other West Bengal universities follow their own forms and fees. The order is the same everywhere: registration first, migration second.
Changed Your Name After Passing: Boards Will Not Rewrite the Record
Boards and universities correct mistakes. They do not, as a rule, replace a correct old name with a new one you have chosen since, such as a surname taken after marriage or a name changed for personal reasons. Your migration certificate will therefore show the name you studied under.
That is not a problem in itself. You carry the old certificate, and you link it to your present name. For most admissions an affidavit is enough. If an authority asks for official proof of a change, that is a gazette notification, which supports your documents but does not rewrite the board's register; see gazette name change in West Bengal.
Do not apply to a board to change a correct record into a new name and wait for months for a refusal. Ask first whether your case is an error at all.
When the New College Sees a Different Name on the Migration Certificate
A mismatch usually shows up at admission: the migration certificate shows one spelling and Aadhaar or the new application shows another. Most colleges will accept an explanation backed by an affidavit, if the difference is clearly the same person.
A one and the same person affidavit states that both names belong to you and lists the documents carrying each. See one and the same person affidavit. Keep the original documents ready for verification.
If the new college or university asks for the migration certificate itself to be corrected, ask them to say so in writing, and take that letter to the board or university that issued it. That is the only office that can act.
