JNVST Navodaya Admission Name Mismatch: Line Up the Child's Papers First
The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) for Class VI is often a child's first big form. Parents type the name from Aadhaar or from memory, but at admission the school checks it against the birth certificate, the residence certificate and the head master's certificate. The prospectus says a mismatch can cancel the admission. This page shows which record to fill from, what to fix before you apply, and what to carry.

JNVST Navodaya Name Mismatch (Quick Answer)
For the JNVST Class VI form, type the child's name and date of birth exactly as the birth certificate shows them, because the birth certificate is checked at admission. Before you apply, make the child's Aadhaar and school record match it. If the birth certificate has no name or a wrong spelling, get it corrected first; that is usually free or low cost at the local body. The prospectus warns that mismatched information can cancel the admission.
| Problem | Usual fix |
|---|---|
| Birth certificate has no name | Get the name entered by the registering local body |
| Birth certificate spelling differs from Aadhaar | Correct the wrong one, usually Aadhaar |
| School register spelling differs | Head master corrects it from proof |
| Form typed with a wrong spelling | Use the correction window, if NVS opens one |
| Surname differs from a parent's papers | Usually no fix needed; carry the birth certificate |
About JNVST Class VI Admission in West Bengal
Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) runs the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, residential schools for children, mostly from rural areas. Entry to Class VI is through the JNVST. The prospectus for the 2026 session lists 18 JNVs in West Bengal.
For that session, the child must have been born between 1 May 2014 and 31 July 2016, both dates included. A child usually applies to the JNV of the district where the parent lives.
The form is filled online, with the child's photograph, the signatures of the parent and the child, and Aadhaar details or a residence certificate.
Each year has its own prospectus and dates on the NVS website. Read it fully before you apply.
The JNVST Prospectus Rule on Correct Information
The prospectus asks parents to give correct information that can be substantiated at the time of admission with supporting documents. It also says that if any information in the online form is found to be false, incorrect or mismatched, the admission is liable to be cancelled.
The same prospectus says that no request will be entertained to correct or modify submitted data. News reports, however, describe a correction window until 30 August 2025 for the 2026 session. So the rule seems to be: correct only in the window NVS gives, and expect no change after that. We cannot confirm which fields that window allowed.
For a ten-year-old's application, that is strict. It means the parent's job is to get the papers right before the form, not after the result.
Which Record to Fill the Child's Name From
Fill the child's name and date of birth from the birth certificate, letter by letter. The birth certificate is the document NVS asks for at admission, so it must agree with the form.
Then compare it with the child's Aadhaar and the school admission register. If all three agree, you are safe. If they do not, fix the wrong one before you apply. Do not just type whatever Aadhaar says, because Aadhaar for children is often made with a spelling the parent chose at the centre.
Watch the small differences: Md against Mohammad, a missing Kumar or Kumari, or a surname the school left out. Our page on Md, Mohd and Sk spellings covers short forms.
When the Child's Birth Certificate Has No Name or a Wrong Name
Many West Bengal birth certificates were issued without the child's name, because the name was not decided when the birth was registered. The name can be added later by the local body that registered the birth, the municipality or the gram panchayat office, through the state's birth and death registration system.
If the name is there but misspelt, that is a correction by the Registrar, not a gazette matter. Our guides on name change in a child's birth certificate and birth certificate name change explain both. Start early, because the local body can take weeks.
Child's Aadhaar and the Residence Certificate for JNVST
The JNVST form asks for Aadhaar details. If the child does not yet have an Aadhaar number, the prospectus allows registration with the parent's residence certificate instead.
If the child's Aadhaar spelling differs from the birth certificate, correct Aadhaar at a centre with the birth certificate as proof. Remember that UIDAI allows a name change only twice in a lifetime, and a one-letter fix uses one. Our page on name change in Aadhaar for a child has the steps.
The parent's residence certificate should carry the parent's name as it appears on their own papers. If you need one corrected, see domicile certificate correction.
The Head Master's Certificate and the School Register
At admission, NVS asks for a certificate from the head master about the child's study in Classes III, IV and V. The head master writes it from the school admission register, so the name will be whatever the school recorded.
If the school spelt the name wrongly, ask the head master to correct the register from the birth certificate before you apply. The same school record feeds the child's APAAR ID; our page on APAAR ID and DigiLocker name mismatch explains how a school corrects it.
Using the JNVST Correction Window
For the 2026 session, reports describe a correction window until 30 August 2025, just after registration closed. Log in during that window and check every field, especially the child's name, date of birth, gender, category and district.
If you spot a mistake after the window closes, write to the JNV principal of your district and to NVS with a copy of the birth certificate, and keep a copy of your letter. The prospectus does not promise a change, so be prepared to explain the difference with documents at admission.
What to Carry for Navodaya Admission
If the child is selected, the prospectus lists these documents for admission:
- Birth certificate issued by a government authority
- Residence certificate of the parent in the district
- Category certificate (SC, ST or OBC), if claimed
- Certificate from the head master about study in Classes III, IV and V
Bring originals with copies. If a spelling still differs, a parent can carry an affidavit for a minor explaining it, but whether that is accepted is the school's decision.
If the Child's Name Has Really Changed
If the child's name has really changed, for example after adoption or a change of surname, the records will not match on their own. A minor cannot use the Kolkata Gazette, so the route is the central Gazette of India.
Our pages on surname change for a child and gazette name change for a minor explain when that is needed. A gazette is supporting proof; the birth certificate, Aadhaar and school record still need correcting one by one.
