WBSSC Group C and D Recruitment Name Mismatch: Know Your Anchor Document
The WBSSC non-teaching recruitment of 2025 opened 2,989 Group C (clerk) and 5,488 Group D posts in state-aided schools. Group C needs Madhyamik. Group D needs only a Class VIII pass, so many candidates have no Madhyamik paper at all. That changes which document your name should follow. This page shows which name to use, what to fix first, and what to carry to the interview.

WBSSC Group C and D Name Mismatch (Quick Answer)
For WBSSC Group C, write your name, father's name and date of birth exactly as your Madhyamik certificate shows them. For Group D, if you did not pass Madhyamik, use your school leaving certificate or birth certificate, whichever the notification accepts. Make your caste certificate and Aadhaar match before you apply; corrections at the issuing office are usually free. Carry linking proof to the interview. Always follow the notification for your round on wbssc.gov.in.
| Post | Minimum qualification | Safest name source |
|---|---|---|
| Group C (Clerk) | Madhyamik or equivalent | Madhyamik certificate |
| Group D, Madhyamik passed | Class VIII | Madhyamik certificate |
| Group D, studied to Class VIII only | Class VIII | School leaving certificate or birth certificate |
About WBSSC Group C and Group D Non-Teaching Recruitment
The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) recruits non-teaching staff for state-aided secondary and higher secondary schools. In 2025 it advertised 2,989 Group C (clerk) posts and 5,488 Group D posts, with online registration in November 2025 and a written test planned for January 2026.
Reports gave the minimum qualification as a Madhyamik pass for Group C and a Class VIII pass for Group D, with an age range of 18 to 40 counted on 1 January 2025, and relaxation for reserved categories.
Selection for Group C was reported as a written test, academic record, prior experience and an interview with a typing and computer test. For Group D it was a written test, prior experience and an interview.
Different reports gave slightly different registration dates, so always rely on the Commission's own notice on wbssc.gov.in for your round.
Why WBSSC Document Verification Is Strict Now
In April 2025 the Supreme Court upheld the cancellation of the 2016 round of WBSSC appointments of teachers and non-teaching staff. The new rounds are being watched closely, and candidates should expect every document to be checked carefully.
For you, this means one thing: a small spelling difference that might once have passed without a question may now need an explanation on paper. Fix what you can before you apply.
For teachers, the 2025 SLST rules ask for name, parents' names and date of birth as per Madhyamik and allow no correction after submission. Our page on WBSSC SLST name mismatch explains them. Check whether your non-teaching notification says the same.
Group C Clerk Posts: Use the Madhyamik Name
For a Group C post, copy your name, father's name and date of birth from your Madhyamik certificate, letter by letter, in the same order. Do not copy from Aadhaar if it spells your name differently.
If your Madhyamik paper says Md Salim Sk, write that, even if Aadhaar says Mohammad Salim Sheikh. Our pages on Md, Mohd and Sk spellings and name order mismatch cover the common cases. The same Madhyamik rule applies to WBPSC Clerkship.
Group D Candidates Without a Madhyamik Certificate
This is the gap most guides miss. A Group D candidate may have studied only up to Class VIII. Then there is no board certificate to anchor your name, and you must pick the oldest reliable record you have.
Usually that is your school leaving certificate (or transfer certificate) from the last school you attended, or your birth certificate. Use whichever the notification accepts as proof of age, and write your name exactly as it appears there.
If the school leaving certificate is wrong, the school corrects it from its admission register. See school leaving certificate correction. If the birth certificate is wrong, the local body that registered the birth corrects it; see birth certificate name change. Do this before you apply.
Common Name Mismatches in WBSSC Non-Teaching Documents
- Spelling: Mondal and Mandal, Bauri and Bawri, Hansda and Hansdah.
- Short forms: Md, Mohd and Mohammad; Sk and Sheikh.
- Middle names: Kumar, Chandra, Kumari or Rani present on one paper and missing on another.
- No surname: only a first name on an old school paper, a full name on Aadhaar.
- Father's name: written one way on the caste certificate and another on the school paper.
- Married surname: maiden name on school papers, married name on Aadhaar.
None of these is a change of name, and none needs a gazette. Most are explained by a one and the same person affidavit, but correcting a wrong certificate first is always safer.
Caste and OBC Certificate Name Mismatch for WBSSC
If you apply as SC, ST or OBC, your certificate must carry the same name and father's name as your anchor document. If it does not, get it corrected at the SDO office that issued it. Do not apply for a second certificate in a new spelling.
See caste certificate correction and OBC certificate correction for the steps.
Experience Certificates With a Different Name
Prior similar experience counts in both Group C and Group D selection. If you worked somewhere under a slightly different spelling, the experience certificate may not match your form.
Ask the employer to issue the certificate in the name on your anchor document, or to add a line confirming that both spellings refer to you. If that is not possible, carry an affidavit that links the two.
Married Women and Surname Change in WBSSC Recruitment
If your school papers carry your maiden name and Aadhaar carries your married name, use the anchor document name unless the notification says otherwise, and carry your marriage certificate. It links both names.
You do not need a gazette just because you took your husband's surname. If the marriage certificate itself has a mistake, fix it first; see marriage certificate correction.
What to Carry to the WBSSC Interview and Verification
Your call letter will list the documents. Expect to need originals with self-attested copies of:
- Madhyamik certificate, or the school leaving certificate or birth certificate for Group D
- Any higher qualification you mentioned
- Caste or OBC certificate, if claimed
- Experience certificates, if claimed
- Aadhaar or another photo ID
- Marriage certificate, if your surname changed by marriage
- A one and the same person affidavit, if your papers show different spellings
Put the linking papers on top. It makes your case easy to follow.
After Joining a School: Your Name in the Service Book
Once you join, your name goes into your service book, which decides pay and pension papers. Make sure it carries the name you will keep.
A later name change follows the state rules. A woman taking her husband's surname, or going back to her maiden name, usually needs only an intimation; any other change needs a deed, a newspaper notice and a gazette. See name change for state government employees.
Mistakes That Hurt WBSSC Group C and D Candidates
Copying the name from Aadhaar
Aadhaar spellings often differ from school papers. Use your anchor document.
Assuming every Group D candidate has Madhyamik
Many do not. Pick the right anchor document early.
Getting a second caste certificate
Correct the one you have at the issuing office.
Ignoring the experience certificate
It is checked too. Get it in the right name.
Getting a gazette for a spelling slip
A gazette is only for a real change of name.
