Railway jobs through the Railway Recruitment Boards and Army entries like Agniveer draw huge numbers of applicants from West Bengal every year. Both check names strictly against the Class 10 certificate, and both reject candidates at document verification when papers do not match. What Railway Recruitment Board Notices Say About Names
Candidates from West Bengal usually apply through RRB Kolkata, RRB Malda or RRB Siliguri. Every RRB notice follows the same rules on names.
RRB's Centralised Employment Notice No. 09/2025 (Level 1) says details must be entered as recorded in the matriculation or Class 10 certificate. Where a name has changed, the candidate indicates both the changed name and the original name, and produces a gazette notification or any other legal document, with valid photo ID in the changed name, at the CBT or document verification.
An RRB FAQ for the 2025 technician recruitment adds that the proof of name change should be in hand before the application is submitted. A gazette applied for after the notice may not count.
RRB Create an Account: The Name You Cannot Change Later
RRB applications start with "Create an Account", where you enter your name and other basic details and are advised to authenticate through Aadhaar or DigiLocker.
The notice says details filled in Create an Account, along with the chosen Railway, cannot be modified later. The modification window for other fields (5 to 14 March 2026 for CEN 09/2025) charges Rs 250 per modification.
So type your name exactly as in Class 10, letter by letter, before you press submit. A wrong name here can follow you through the whole recruitment.
Get Your Name Change Proof Before the Railway Notice
If your name today differs from your Class 10 certificate because you actually changed it (a new surname, a dropped name, a different first name), get the gazette notification before the next RRB notice opens.
A gazette takes about 7 days in the Kolkata Gazette for West Bengal residents, or 30 to 45 days in the Gazette of India. RRB windows are often only three to four weeks long, so starting after the notice is risky.

Railway Document Verification: What to Carry
Carry the original Class 10 certificate, any higher qualification, caste or EWS certificate if claimed, photo ID, and the gazette or marriage certificate if your name changed. Copies should be ready too.

Name Mismatch in Army Agniveer and Other Recruitment
Army recruitment in West Bengal runs through Army Recruiting Offices, with an online common entrance exam followed by a rally or physical tests. Like the railways, it relies on the Class 10 certificate for name and date of birth.
Apply in the Class 10 name. If Aadhaar or other IDs differ, correct them in good time or carry proof linking the names. Read the current notification on the Army's recruitment website for the exact list of documents.
