ABHA Health ID Name Change in West Bengal

The ABHA number is your digital health ID under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. Hospitals, labs and schemes use it to pull your health records together, and since August 2026 many West Bengal families are also meeting the Ayushman card for the first time. The two are easy to confuse, and both take your name from Aadhaar. This page explains where the name on ABHA comes from, how to update it after an Aadhaar change, what happens to old hospital records in your old name, and how ABHA differs from the Ayushman card and Swasthya Sathi.

How to Change the Name on Your ABHA Health ID (Quick Answer)

An ABHA created through Aadhaar e-KYC takes its name from Aadhaar, and after KYC the profile is overwritten with Aadhaar data. So correct Aadhaar first, then repeat the KYC in your ABHA account so it picks up the new name. Your ABHA number and health records stay the same. ABHA is not the Ayushman card; that card is a separate scheme record. Both are free.

The Basics

What the ABHA Health ID Is

ABHA, the Ayushman Bharat Health Account, is a 14-digit number issued under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). It lets hospitals, clinics and labs that are on the ABDM network link your health records to one ID, with your consent.

You can also make an ABHA address, a short username, which is what most apps show. Records are linked to the ABHA number behind it.

ABHA is not an insurance card and does not by itself give free treatment. That is what confuses many people in West Bengal, where the Ayushman card has only just arrived.

Where the Name Comes From

Where Your ABHA Name Comes From

Most people make ABHA through Aadhaar e-KYC. The name, date of birth, gender and photo are copied from Aadhaar. A discussion on the ABDM developer forum notes that once KYC is done, the profile details are overwritten with Aadhaar data.

So an ABHA name is almost never "wrong" by itself. If it shows a spelling you do not like, Aadhaar has that spelling.

Some people made ABHA through a driving licence or mobile route without full Aadhaar KYC. Their names are self-declared, and they are better off completing Aadhaar KYC now so the record is verified.

Updating

How to Update the Name on ABHA After an Aadhaar Change

Step one is Aadhaar. Correct or change the name at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra; see Aadhaar name change in West Bengal. Aadhaar allows a name change only twice in a lifetime.

Step two, once the new Aadhaar is live, log in to your ABHA account on the ABHA website or app and redo the Aadhaar-based KYC. The profile then picks up the updated name. The ABHA number does not change.

If the KYC option is not visible or fails, use the ABDM help channels shown in the app. A health facility's ABHA counter can also help create or verify ABHA.

Old Records

Old Hospital Records in Your Old Name

Hospital files, lab reports and discharge summaries carry the name you gave at registration. Updating ABHA does not rewrite them. They stay linked to your ABHA number if they were linked, so the name difference does not break the link.

Where you need an old record for an insurance claim or a medical board and the name differs, an affidavit linking the names usually satisfies the reader; see one and the same person affidavit.

From now on, register at hospitals with the Aadhaar name, and give your ABHA address so records link cleanly.

Ayushman Card

ABHA Versus the Ayushman Card in West Bengal

West Bengal signed an MoU with the National Health Authority on 8 June 2026 to join Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, becoming the 36th State or UT to do so. A news report says the scheme launched in the state on 16 August 2026, with cards made through Aadhaar e-KYC for families on the scheme's beneficiary database, and that Swasthya Sathi continues during the transition.

The Ayushman card is a scheme card that gives cover for hospital treatment if you are an eligible beneficiary. The ABHA number is a health record ID that anyone can make. They are different records. Fixing one does not fix the other.

If your Ayushman card name differs from Aadhaar, it is usually because the beneficiary list has an older spelling; the e-KYC step links it to Aadhaar. For the state card, see Swasthya Sathi card name correction.

Family

ABHA for Children and Elderly Parents

A child's ABHA follows the child's Aadhaar, which follows the birth certificate. If the child's name is wrong, the fix starts with the birth certificate, then Aadhaar, then ABHA.

Elderly parents often have Aadhaar names that differ from old pension or hospital papers. Leave ABHA on the Aadhaar name, and link the old papers by affidavit where needed.

Central government pensioners who link CGHS with ABHA need the names to match; see CGHS card name correction.
