Bank Locker Name Mismatch in West Bengal

A bank locker is opened by name and signature, and it is closed out the same way. If the locker hirer has changed her name after marriage, if the nominee's name in the bank's record is spelt differently from their Aadhaar, or if a legal heir's name does not match the death certificate, the branch will hold things up until the names line up. This page explains the RBI locker rules that apply, what the branch needs for each kind of mismatch, and when a simple affidavit is enough.

How to Fix a Bank Locker Name Mismatch in West Bengal (Quick Answer)

If your own name changed, update your bank KYC under your customer ID, then ask the branch to record the new name and a fresh specimen signature against the locker agreement. If a nominee or legal heir's name does not match, give the bank an affidavit linking the names with their ID. RBI requires locker claims to be settled within 15 days of a complete claim.

RBI Safe Deposit Locker Rules That Apply to Name Mismatches

Bank lockers in India follow the Reserve Bank of India's revised instructions on safe deposit lockers (RBI/2021-2022/86, dated 18 August 2021), in force from 1 January 2022. Under them, every locker is held under a locker agreement on stamped paper, based on the Indian Banks' Association model, and banks were told to renew agreements with existing customers by 1 January 2023.

Locker customers must meet the same KYC rules as account holders. That is why a name change on a locker always starts with your KYC, not with the locker itself.

The same rules give lockers a nomination facility and require banks to settle a claim by a nominee, survivor or legal heir within 15 days of receiving the claim with the documents asked for.

From 1 November 2025, under the Banking Laws (Amendment) Act, 2025, a locker hirer can name up to four nominees. For lockers and safe custody the nomination is successive, a priority order, because the contents cannot be split the way money can.

Your Name

Your Name Changed: Updating the Locker Hirer's Name

If you took your husband's surname, corrected a spelling, or changed your name for any other reason, the bank first updates your KYC under your customer ID with the new Aadhaar and PAN. A locker is linked to that customer record.

Then ask the branch to note the new name against the locker agreement and to take a fresh specimen signature. Access to a locker is checked by name and signature, so a new signature after marriage matters as much as the name. Some banks note the change on the existing agreement; others ask you to sign a fresh one on stamp paper. Follow your bank.

Do this at the same visit as your accounts. For the full list of what to update, see bank account name change after marriage.

Joint Lockers

Joint Locker: When One Hirer's Name Changes

Many West Bengal families hold lockers jointly, often husband and wife or parent and child. If one hirer's name changes, that hirer updates KYC and signature in the usual way. Banks often ask the other hirer to sign the request too, because the agreement is between the bank and both of them.

The operating instruction, such as either or survivor, does not change because of a name change. If you want to change who may operate the locker, that is a separate request.

If one joint hirer has died, the survivor's access follows the operating instruction and the bank's claim process, not a name correction.

Nominee

Nominee's Name Does Not Match Their ID

The most common locker mismatch shows up after a death. The nominee was registered years ago as, say, "Rina Dey", and her Aadhaar now reads "Rina Das" after marriage. The bank must be sure the person claiming is the person nominated.

Give the bank the nominee's current ID and a one and the same person affidavit stating that both names belong to the nominee, with any supporting paper such as a marriage certificate. See one and the same person affidavit.

While the hirer is alive, the easier fix is to update the nomination itself with the nominee's current name. Ask your branch for its nomination form and check how each nominee's name is written.

Legal Heirs

No Nominee: Legal Heirs and Name Mismatches

If there is no nominee and no surviving joint hirer, the contents go to the legal heirs. RBI's locker rules let banks follow a simplified claim process for this, and many banks release contents without a succession certificate or probate within their own limits, against an indemnity and the papers their policy lists.

Names are checked across the death certificate, the locker record and each heir's ID. A spelling difference in any one of these will be raised. If the deceased's name on the death certificate differs from the locker record, an affidavit linking them usually satisfies the bank.

Where the bank insists on a court document, that is a succession certificate or probate; see succession certificate name mismatch. A legal heir dispute is a lawyer's job, and the District Legal Services Authority offers free legal aid to those who qualify.

After Death

Locker Opened After Death: Inventory and Witnesses

When a locker is opened by a nominee, survivor or legal heir, RBI's rules require an inventory of the contents, prepared in the presence of the claimants and witnesses, with video recording where the bank does it.

The inventory carries the names of the people present, so check that each name is written as on their ID before you sign. A wrong spelling here is easy to fix on the day and hard to fix later.

If the will covers the locker contents, read will and probate name mismatch for how names in a will are matched.

Affidavit

When an Affidavit Is Enough and When It Is Not

For spelling differences, a married surname, an initial against a full name, or Bengali and English versions of the same name, a one and the same person affidavit on stamp paper, attested by a notary, is what most branches accept.

A gazette notification is not normally needed for a locker. It is useful only when the name has truly changed, not just its spelling, and the bank asks for official proof. A gazette is supporting proof; it does not change the bank's record by itself.

We prepare the affidavit. The bank decides what it will accept, so ask the branch first and show them the draft if they want to see it.
