Father Name Correction in Domicile Certificate: On One Proforma, It Is About Him
This document comes in two versions, and the parent's name does a different job in each. On the version for a candidate living in West Bengal, it identifies you: son or daughter of a named person. On the version for a candidate living elsewhere whose parent is a permanent resident, the certificate certifies his residence, and it carries his photograph. Read yours before you do anything else.

Correcting a Father's Name on a Domicile Certificate (Quick Answer)
First, read which proforma you hold. One certifies that you have resided in West Bengal for a stated period, naming your father to identify you. The other certifies that your father or mother is a permanent resident, for a candidate living outside the state, and carries the parent's photograph. Then check the stage: while the application is under process the Enquiry Officer or SDO can send it back to you for correction, so raise it at once. Once issued and digitally signed, go to the office that approved it with the certificate, a written request, and documents in his correct name, ordinarily his Aadhaar, plus his residence documents where the certificate rests on them. Where he has genuinely changed his name, the support is his gazette, in his name. The service is free.

| Point | Candidate resides in West Bengal | Parent is the permanent resident |
|---|---|---|
| What is certified | Your continuous residence in the state | Your parent's permanent residence |
| Role of the parent name | Identifies you as son or daughter of | Names the person the certificate is about |
| Whose photograph | Yours | Yours and the parent's |
| Whose documents carry the case | Mostly yours | His residence and identity documents |
| Effect of a wrong parent name | An identification error | Touches the fact being certified |
| Gazette needed? | Only if he changed his own name | Only if he changed his own name |
Which Domicile Certificate Proforma Do You Hold? Read the First Line
Forget the form number for a moment and read what the certificate actually says.
If it certifies that you have resided in West Bengal continuously for a stated period, and describes you as the son or daughter of a named person, then your father's name is there to identify you. The fact being certified is your own residence.
If it certifies that your father or mother is a permanent resident of West Bengal, used where the candidate lives outside the state, then the certificate is about him. That version carries his photograph as well as yours, which is the quickest way to tell which you are holding.
Look for the second photograph
A parent's photograph on the form is the giveaway. If it is there, his particulars are load-bearing and the correction should arrive with his documents attached.
Domicile Proforma A1 and A2: Why the Letters Mislead
These proformas circulate as appendices to examination bulletins, and the letters are not used consistently across every source you will find online. Descriptions that confidently tell you what A1 means and what A2 means often disagree with the text printed on the forms themselves.
So do not choose a proforma by its letter. Read the definition printed at the top of the form you have been given, and where an admission body prescribes one, follow that body's own bulletin rather than a general article. We would rather tell you that than have you rely on a letter and discover the problem during admissions.
Ask the admission body
If a college or an examination board requires a particular proforma, its bulletin is the authority on which one and what it must say. That is the document a verifier will be holding.
Domicile Application Pending or Certificate Issued: Two Correction Routes
Still under process. The West Bengal workflow lets an officer do more than approve or reject: the Enquiry Officer conducts the offline enquiry and the Sub-Divisional Officer can send the application back to you for correction. If you spot the mistake now, say so, because a returned file is far better than a certificate issued with a known error.
Issued and digitally signed. Go back to the office that approved it, with the certificate and the supporting documents.
The full domicile guide covers both stages, the AIN and the offline route.
Verification runs wide
Enquiry goes through the District Intelligence Branch and the local police station as well as the office, which is why a correction can add weeks rather than days.
Documents Required for Father Name Correction in a Domicile Certificate
- The certificate, or the application reference where it is pending
- His Aadhaar, and anything else carrying the same spelling
- His residence documents where the certificate rests on his residence: land deed, khatiyan, rent agreement or a residential certificate
- An affidavit that both spellings refer to one and the same person, where the office asks for one
- His gazette, where he changed his own name
- His death certificate, where he has died
- Your own identity and age documents
- A written request setting out what is wrong
Scan cleanly rather than photographing pages, and keep the spelling identical across everything you submit.
Apply to the SDO or Office That Issued the Domicile Certificate
Identify the office
The District Magistrate, Additional District Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Officer or Block Development Officer that approved and digitally signed your certificate, depending on the level at which it was decided.
Write the request
The certificate reference, the parent's name as printed, the correct name, and one sentence on how the error arose. Say which proforma you hold.
Attach his documents
Identity in his correct name, and his residence documents where the certificate rests on them.
Submit and take an acknowledgement
Keep the AIN or the new reference. Status checks and downloads run on it.
Follow up rather than waiting
If nothing has moved in a few weeks, ask at the office. Files sit quietly; nobody rings you.
Domicile Certificate Father Name Correction After His Death
Take his death certificate with documents in his correct name. Where the certificate is the version resting on his residence, gather the land or property documents in his correct name at the same time, because the office is being asked to correct a statement about him.
Old records often sit with relatives rather than in your own file, so one round of asking the family usually turns up more than a second visit to the office.
If the residence basis has changed
Where the family no longer holds the property the certificate referred to, say so at the outset. It is better raised early than discovered during verification.
Students: Fix the Domicile Certificate Before State Quota Admissions
A domicile certificate is produced during state quota admissions, scholarships and government recruitment, and at those counters documents are compared line by line against Aadhaar and the board certificates. A parent's name that differs is queried, and it is queried while a deadline is running.
The certificate itself is free and can be corrected. What cannot be recovered is an admission window. Deal with it in a quiet month rather than in the week the portal opens.
If the board certificate is the wrong one, start there, since it is the slower record to change.
Order of work
Aadhaar first, then the board record if that is wrong, then the domicile certificate. Fixing the easy one first and the hard one later leaves three documents still disagreeing.
When a Gazette Is Needed for a Father's Name, and Whose It Is
Not for a misspelling, where his existing documents are the proof. It is needed where he genuinely changed his own name, and the notification is then published in his name and sworn by him. Your certificate follows the change he made.
The gazette is his
Published in his name, on his affidavit, with his identity documents. Nothing about it is in yours.
Affidavit before a First Class Judicial Magistrate
Sworn by him, since the Part II portal asks for the affidavit number and the Magistrate's name. Signed in his old name.
Notices in two daily newspapers
One Bengali and one English daily, in his name, complete pages kept with masthead and date.
Apply on the Part II portal
In his name, with identity proof under 2 MB and a photograph under 100 KB.
Pay Rs 1,100 on GRIPS
The state fee. The Gazette of India applies instead where a passport is involved or he lives outside West Bengal, at 30 to 45 days.
Then apply for your correction
Attach his notification at the issuing office. Which gazette a case needs.
Father Name Correction: Frequently Asked Questions
Why does it matter which proforma I hold?
Because the parent's name is doing a different job on each. On the proforma used where the candidate lives in West Bengal, it identifies you: son or daughter of a named person. On the proforma used where the candidate does not live in the state but a parent is a permanent resident, the certificate certifies the parent's residence, and it carries the parent's photograph. A correction to the parent's name means something different in the two cases.
How do I tell which one I have?
Read the heading and the first line of the certificate rather than relying on the letter. One version certifies that you have resided in West Bengal continuously for a stated period. The other certifies that your father or mother is a permanent resident of West Bengal. That sentence tells you what the document is actually asserting.
The letters A1 and A2 confuse me. Which is which?
Do not go by the letter alone. These proformas are reproduced as appendices in examination bulletins and the labelling is not always used the same way across sources. Read the definition printed at the top of the form you have been given, and where an admission body prescribes a particular proforma, follow that body's own bulletin.
How do I correct my father's name?
It depends on the stage. While the application is under process, the Enquiry Officer or the Sub-Divisional Officer can send it back for correction, so raise it at once. Once the certificate is issued and digitally signed, go back to the office that approved it with the certificate, documents in your father's correct name, and a written request.
What documents prove his correct name?
Documents already carrying it, ordinarily his Aadhaar, along with anything else showing the same spelling. Where the certificate is the version that certifies his residence, his own residence and identity documents carry more weight, because it is his position being certified rather than yours.
My father has genuinely changed his name. What then?
Then the supporting document is his gazette notification, published in his name and sworn by him. Your certificate is being brought into line with a change he made, so the office will want to see the notification itself.
My father has died. Can it still be corrected?
Yes. Produce his death certificate along with documents in his correct name. Where the certificate is the version resting on his residence, the office will also want the residence evidence, so gather the land or property documents in his correct name at the same time.
Is there another verification visit?
Possibly. Verification in West Bengal runs through the District Intelligence Branch and the local police station as well as the office, so a correction can attract a fresh check. Keep the AIN and follow up on it rather than waiting silently.
Does the certificate cost anything to correct?
The service is free. A common service centre may charge for helping you use the portal, which is separate from any government fee, and there is no government fee here to pay.
Should I fix Aadhaar first?
If his Aadhaar is the document that is wrong, yes. Offices read Aadhaar as the proof of a name, so a correction that contradicts it has nothing to rest on.
Why is this urgent for students?
Because the certificate is produced during admissions, where documents are matched line by line against Aadhaar and the board certificates under a deadline. A parent's name that differs across those is queried at exactly the wrong moment.
Do you handle this?
We prepare gazette notifications and affidavit documentation, including a father's own gazette where he has changed his name. The application is free and goes to the issuing office, and where your existing documents already prove the point we will say that you need nothing from us.
