Father Name Correction in Caste Certificate: His Name Is the Evidence
On most documents a parent's name is a detail. Here it is the whole basis. The certificate format used in West Bengal says on its face that the certificate is issued on the basis of the certificate held by the father or mother of the applicant. That is the link between you and the community finding, which is why an office looks harder at this correction than at any other field.

How to Correct a Father's Name on a Caste Certificate (Quick Answer)
Apply to the office that issued the certificate with a written request giving the certificate number and date, the parent's name as printed, the correct name, and how the error arose. Attach an affidavit that both refer to one and the same person, documents in your father's correct name, ordinarily his Aadhaar, and the linkage proof: his own caste certificate, or that of a paternal blood relative with proof of the relationship, which West Bengal accepts as caste identity evidence. Where he has genuinely changed his name, the support is his gazette, in his name. Expect a possible Circle Inspector visit, and keep the request narrowly about the name so nothing wider is reopened.

| Situation | What supports the correction | Gazette? |
|---|---|---|
| His name is misspelt on your certificate | Documents in his correct name, and the affidavit | No |
| He has genuinely changed his own name | His gazette, in his name | Yes, his |
| He holds no caste certificate of his own | A paternal blood relative's certificate with proof of relationship | No |
| He has died | Death certificate, plus documents in his correct name | Only if he had changed his name |
| His certificate is from another state | Raise it with the issuing office before applying | Depends on the case |
| The certificate has not been issued yet | Edit the pending application instead | No |

Why Father's Name on an SC or ST Certificate Is the Basis, Not a Detail
Read your certificate carefully. The West Bengal format states that the certificate is issued on the basis of the Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe certificate issued to a named person, described as the father or mother of the applicant.
That single sentence explains everything about how this correction is handled. The parent's name is not decoration; it is the evidentiary link that connects you to a community finding already made about your family. Change the name and you are, on the face of it, adjusting the link.
None of which makes the correction difficult. It makes it a correction that has to arrive with its evidence attached rather than as a bare request.
Compare it with other documents
On an electoral roll the relative's name is a field that identifies you among namesakes. Here it does far more work, and the file should be built accordingly.
Linkage Proof: Paternal Blood Relative's Caste Certificate
The strongest support is your father's own caste certificate, since that is the document your certificate refers to.
Where he holds none, West Bengal accepts the caste certificate of a paternal blood relative, produced together with proof of the relationship. An uncle or grandfather with a certificate can carry the linkage where your father never obtained one, which is common in older families.
Proof of relationship means documents that show the chain: birth certificates, school records, an electoral roll entry, a family register entry, whatever exists. Assemble the chain before you apply rather than being asked for it one document at a time.
A fair complaint, acknowledged
The department's own guidelines note the complaint that issuing authorities sometimes ask for several documents to prove a single criterion. It is reasonable to ask politely which criterion a document is meant to establish, and whether one will do.
Documents Required for Father Name Correction in a Caste Certificate
- The original certificate, with photocopies
- His Aadhaar, and anything else carrying the same spelling
- His caste certificate, or a paternal blood relative's with proof of relationship
- An affidavit that both spellings refer to one and the same person
- His gazette, where he changed his own name
- His death certificate, where he has died
- Your own identity documents
- The written application, signed
Requirements differ across districts. Ring or visit the issuing office and confirm before travelling with a full file.
Apply to the SDO or Office That Issued the Caste Certificate
Identify the issuing office
Under the state Act the Sub-Divisional Officer is the certificate issuing authority. The Block Development Officer recommends for blocks, an officer of at least Deputy Magistrate rank assigned by the SDO for municipal areas outside Kolkata, and the District Welfare Officer for Kolkata, where Kolkata Municipal Corporation borough offices also receive applications.
Write the request
Certificate number and date, the parent's name as printed, the correct name, and one sentence on how the error arose. Ask for a correction, not a new certificate.
Attach the affidavit and linkage documents
The affidavit, his identity documents, and the certificate that carries the linkage.
Submit with the original certificate
The office is amending its own record and will want to see what it issued. Take an acknowledgement with a reference number.
Follow up on the reference
If nothing has moved in about three weeks, ask at the office rather than waiting silently.
Caste Certificate Father Name Correction After His Death
It changes what you can produce, not whether the correction is possible. Take his death certificate together with documents in his correct name and his caste certificate if one survives.
Where nothing of his remains, which happens with older generations, the paternal blood relative route is what offices are used to: a certificate held by his brother or father, with documents proving the relationship.
Gather from the family first
Old certificates, school records and land documents often sit with relatives rather than in your own file. One round of asking usually turns up more than a second visit to the office would.
Father's Caste Certificate From Another State
West Bengal has its own rules for applicants whose family originates outside the state, including a different certificate format in some cases and limits on entitlement to benefits granted by this state. There are also separate provisions for particular categories of migrant families.
This is genuinely a matter for the issuing office and, if the position is contested, for a lawyer. What we can say usefully is: raise it at the outset rather than after an application has been made on incomplete information, because a file that has to be corrected twice takes far longer than one that started with the full picture.
What we will not do
Tell you what your entitlement is. That depends on facts and rules we cannot assess from a web page, and anyone confident about it without seeing your papers is guessing.
Circle Inspector Verification Visit for a Caste Certificate
Field verification is a standard part of the West Bengal process: a Circle Inspector or equivalent revenue officer visits the address and verifies through local enquiry and the documents. Because this correction touches the linkage, it is more likely than most to attract a fresh check.
Make sure the phone number and address on the application are current, and that somebody at home knows a visit may come. In urban Kolkata visits are often scheduled in batches, so timing differs from rural districts.
Have the papers ready at home
Keep the linkage documents where they can be produced on the day. An inspector who sees the chain in one visit does not need to come back.
Keep the Caste Certificate Correction Request About the Name Only
Because the parent's name carries the linkage, a loosely worded application can read as though something larger is in question. Write it tightly: the name as printed, the correct name, the documents that prove it, and a clear statement that nothing else is being asked for.
Attach the linkage documents even if you think they are obvious. An office that can see the chain has no reason to go looking for it.
If several things are wrong
List them separately and ask the office how it wants each handled. Bundling unrelated changes into one vague request is what turns a short correction into a long one.
When a Gazette Is Needed for a Father's Name, and Whose It Is
Not for a misspelling, where his existing documents are the proof. It is needed where he genuinely changed his own name, and in that case the notification is published in his name, sworn by him. Your certificate then follows the change he made.
The gazette is his
Published in his name, on his affidavit, with his identity documents. Nothing about it is in yours.
Affidavit before a First Class Judicial Magistrate
Sworn by him, since the Part II portal asks for the affidavit number and the Magistrate's name. Signed in his old name.
Notices in two daily newspapers
One Bengali and one English daily, in his name, complete pages kept with masthead and date.
Apply on the Part II portal
In his name, with identity proof under 2 MB and a photograph under 100 KB.
Pay Rs 1,100 on GRIPS
The state fee. The Gazette of India applies instead where a passport is involved or he lives outside West Bengal, at 30 to 45 days.
Then apply for your correction
Attach his notification to your application at the issuing office. Which gazette a case needs.
Father Name Correction: Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the father's name treated so seriously on a caste certificate?
Because it is the evidence, not a detail. The certificate format used in West Bengal states on its face that the certificate is issued on the basis of the Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe certificate issued to the father or mother of the applicant. The parent's name is the link between you and the community finding, so an office examines a change there more closely than it would a spelling on a bank record.
How do I get it corrected?
Apply to the office that issued your certificate, with a written request giving the certificate number and date, the parent's name as printed, the correct name, and how the error arose. Attach an affidavit and documents in your father's correct name. Where the office needs the linkage proved again, his own caste certificate or that of a paternal blood relative with proof of relationship is the strongest support.
What is a paternal blood relative certificate?
West Bengal accepts the caste certificate of a paternal blood relative, produced along with proof of the relationship, as evidence of caste identity. It is the usual answer where your father has no certificate of his own, for instance where an uncle or grandfather holds one.
My father's name is misspelt. Is that a correction or a change?
A correction, provided your documents have always carried the correct spelling. Produce documents in his correct name, ordinarily his Aadhaar along with whatever else shows the same spelling, and say plainly that the person is the same and only the record is wrong.
My father has genuinely changed his own name. What then?
Then the supporting document is his gazette notification, in his name, not yours. Your certificate is being brought into line with a change he made, and the office will want to see the notification that made it.
My father has died. Can it still be corrected?
Yes. Produce his death certificate along with documents in his correct name, and his caste certificate if one exists. Where nothing of his survives, a paternal blood relative's certificate with proof of relationship is the route offices are used to.
Will the community finding be re-examined?
It should not be if you keep the application narrow, but be aware that this particular correction touches the evidentiary link, so an office may look at the supporting documents more carefully than for another field. Write the request so it is plainly about correcting a name, and attach the linkage documents so nothing has to be inferred.
Is there a fresh field verification?
Possibly. Field verification by a Circle Inspector, a visit to the address with local enquiry, is standard in West Bengal and a correction of this kind may attract one. Keep the reference number and follow up at the issuing office if nothing has happened in about three weeks.
Which office do I go to?
The one that issued the certificate. In West Bengal the Sub-Divisional Officer is the certificate issuing authority under section 5 of the state Act, with the Block Development Officer as recommending authority for blocks, an officer of at least Deputy Magistrate rank assigned by the SDO for municipal areas outside Kolkata, and the District Welfare Officer for Kolkata. Kolkata Municipal Corporation borough offices also receive applications.
What if my father's certificate is from another state?
Say so at the outset. West Bengal has its own rules for applicants whose family originates elsewhere, including a different certificate format in some cases and limits on entitlement to state benefits. That is a question for the issuing office rather than for a web page, and it is better raised before you apply than after.
The office keeps asking for more documents. Is that normal?
It is common enough that the department's own guidelines acknowledge the complaint that issuing authorities sometimes ask for several documents to prove a single criterion. Ask politely which criterion each document is meant to establish, and whether one document can satisfy it.
Do you handle this?
We prepare gazette notifications and affidavit documentation where a case genuinely needs them, including a father's own gazette where he has changed his name. The correction application goes to the issuing office, and where your documents already prove the point we will tell you that you need nothing from us.
