CLAT Application Name Mismatch: Fix It in the Edit Window, Not at Counselling
Unlike many entrance tests, CLAT has let candidates edit their name and date of birth in its correction window. The catch is that the window is short and final. For a West Bengal student aiming at WBNUJS Kolkata, the name on the CLAT form must also agree with the Class 12 marksheet, the domicile certificate and any OBC or SC/ST certificate. This page shows what to match, what to edit, and what to fix before counselling.

CLAT Name Mismatch (Quick Answer)
For CLAT 2027, type your name exactly as your Class 10 certificate and Class 12 marksheet show it. If you made a mistake, use the correction window: for CLAT 2026 the Consortium allowed changes to name, date of birth, programme, reservation claim and test cities, and said no change would be entertained after it closed. For WB seats, your domicile and caste certificates must carry the same name. Fixing them is free on eDistrict in most cases.
| Problem | Usual fix |
|---|---|
| Typing mistake in your name on the CLAT form | Edit it in the correction window |
| Class 12 and Class 10 spell the name differently | Correct the board record, or use an affidavit at counselling |
| Domicile certificate in a different spelling | Correct it on eDistrict before counselling |
| OBC or SC/ST certificate in a different spelling | Correct it through the SDO before counselling |
| Mismatch noticed after the window closed | Affidavit and supporting papers at the NLU |
About CLAT 2027 for West Bengal Students
The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is run by the Consortium of National Law Universities on consortiumofnlus.ac.in. It fills five-year LLB and LLM seats at the National Law Universities, including the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS) in Kolkata.
Careers360 lists these CLAT 2027 dates: registration opened on 3 August 2026, the last date is 31 October 2026, and the exam is on 6 December 2026, offline. The fee is listed as Rs 4,000 for General, OBC and PwD candidates and Rs 3,500 for SC, ST and BPL candidates.
Careers360 also reports that the application asks for a state domicile certificate as a PDF, and that WBNUJS has changed its reservation for 2027: OBC-A and OBC-B are replaced by a single OBC of West Bengal category.
Each of these papers carries your name. If they do not agree with each other and with the form, the problem shows up at counselling, when there is little time left to fix it.
The CLAT Correction Window: Name and Date of Birth Can Be Edited
CLAT is kinder than most entrance tests here. For CLAT 2026, Careers360 reported the Consortium notice that let candidates change their test city preferences, name, date of birth, programme (UG or PG) and reservation status until 11:59 PM on 9 November 2025. The notice said no request for changes would be entertained after that.
Compare this with NTA tests such as CUET, where only one name field could change; see our page on the CUET application name mismatch.
For CLAT 2027, the Consortium has not yet published its correction schedule. EduProspect notes that past windows closed on 25 October (CLAT 2025) and 9 November (CLAT 2026). Watch your CLAT login and email, and treat any expected date as a guess until the notice comes out.
Log in, click Edit Application, change the field, review the full form and submit it again. Keep a PDF of the final form.
Which Paper Your CLAT Name Should Match
Match your Class 10 (Madhyamik or CBSE/ICSE) certificate and your Class 12 marksheet. The NLU checks eligibility from the Class 12 result, and the Class 10 certificate settles your name and date of birth.
Then check the photo ID you will carry on exam day, usually Aadhaar. The Consortium asks for an original government photo ID at the centre. If Aadhaar spells your name differently, either correct it in time or carry an affidavit linking both spellings.
Watch for the common West Bengal splits: Chatterjee and Chattopadhyay, Md and Mohammad, a Kumari on an old school record, or a Bengali to English spelling chosen by an enrolment operator.
Class 10 and Class 12 Name Mismatch Before CLAT
If your Madhyamik certificate and your Higher Secondary marksheet spell your name differently, settle that first. The board record is the base every other paper is judged against.
West Bengal boards correct errors only, and the request goes through your school. See marksheet and school certificate correction. It can take one to two months, so start before CLAT results.
If there is no time, apply in the Class 12 spelling (the result the NLU checks) and carry an affidavit with both certificates to counselling.
Domicile Certificate Name Mismatch for WBNUJS and WB Seats
Seats reserved for West Bengal domicile candidates are checked against your domicile certificate. If the certificate spells your name, or your father's name, differently from your marksheet, an NLU can ask for proof or refuse the claim.
The certificate is issued on eDistrict as the Local Residence (Domicile) Certificate, free and digitally signed. A spelling error is corrected by applying again with the right documents. See name correction in a domicile certificate.
Do this before the CLAT counselling rounds start. A fresh certificate in the right spelling is far stronger than an affidavit explaining an old one.
OBC, SC and ST Certificate Name Mismatch for CLAT
If you claim a reserved seat, the category certificate must carry your name exactly as your marksheet does. In West Bengal, caste and OBC certificates are issued by the SDO through the Backward Classes Welfare Department. See name change in OBC certificate and name change in caste certificate.
Do not apply for a second certificate in the new spelling while the old one stands. That leaves two genuine certificates in two names. Ask for the existing record to be corrected instead.
OBC candidates should also check that the certificate fits the category asked for in the year's counselling notice, since WBNUJS has changed its OBC categories for 2027.
CLAT Counselling and Admission: What the NLU Checks
After results, the Consortium runs centralised counselling and the allotted NLU verifies your documents at admission. Expect it to put side by side your CLAT admit card and scorecard, Class 10 and Class 12 papers, photo ID, domicile certificate and category certificate.
A small difference, such as initials or a missing middle name, is usually settled with a one and the same person affidavit. A different surname needs real proof, such as a gazette.
Each NLU decides what it accepts. If you are unsure, write to the NLU's admission office before you pay the counselling fee, and keep the reply.
Initials and Name Order on the CLAT Form
Initials, surname first, or a dropped middle name are not errors. If your Class 12 marksheet says S. Das and Aadhaar says Suman Das, type the marksheet form, and carry an affidavit. See name order and format mismatch.
Do not invent a new form on the CLAT application that matches none of your papers. That turns one mismatch into two.
A Real Change of Name Before CLAT Counselling
If you really changed your name, not a spelling slip, the board record stays in the old name and you link the two with a gazette. Adults in West Bengal usually use the Kolkata Gazette Part II; see gazette name change in West Bengal. Students under 18 use the central Gazette of India route through a parent.
A gazette is supporting proof, not a correction. It does not change your marksheet, domicile certificate or CLAT form. Each is updated one by one.
When you do not need us: a typing mistake on the CLAT form is fixed free in the edit window, and an eDistrict correction is free. An affidavit for a small difference costs only the stamp paper and notary fee.

When is the CLAT 2027 correction window?
The Consortium has not announced it yet. Past windows closed on 25 October for CLAT 2025 and 9 November for CLAT 2026.
Can I change my name after the CLAT correction window closes?
The CLAT 2026 notice said no request for changes would be entertained after the window. Use an affidavit at admission instead.
What are the CLAT 2027 dates?
Careers360 lists registration from 3 August to 31 October 2026, and the exam on 6 December 2026.
Which name should I use in the CLAT form?
The name on your Class 10 certificate and Class 12 marksheet.
My Aadhaar spelling is different from my marksheet. What should I do?
Correct Aadhaar if you have time, or carry an affidavit linking both spellings with your ID.
My domicile certificate has a wrong spelling. Will it affect WBNUJS seats?
It can. Correct it on eDistrict before counselling.
Can I get a new OBC certificate in the right spelling?
Ask for the existing certificate to be corrected. Two certificates in two names cause trouble.
Do I need a gazette for a CLAT name mismatch?
Usually not. A gazette is for a real change of name, not a typo.
Will an NLU accept initials on one paper and a full name on another?
Usually, with a one and the same person affidavit. Each NLU decides.
Is there a fee to edit the CLAT form?
No correction fee was mentioned in reports on the CLAT 2026 window. Check the 2027 notice.
Can I get free legal help if my name problem is complex?
Yes. The District Legal Services Authority in your district gives free legal aid to eligible people.

Check Your Name Before CLAT Counselling
Send us how your name reads on Class 10, Class 12, Aadhaar, your domicile certificate and your CLAT form. Most students need only the edit window, an eDistrict correction or an affidavit, and we will tell you so. If you really changed your name, we will tell you which gazette route fits. Monday to Saturday, across West Bengal.
